Yeah, exactly this. I loved the poo poo out of it as a teen, but that was also before I was able to read into the subtext of all that garbage.

Also I'd say it's more a dollop of fetishes and more, well... I forget how many rapes each book has, but I'm sure someone's catalogued that somewhere.

There's a bit where the main "good" guy feels betrayed by his wife because she had sex with him (while he was in disguise as his own brother), even though she was forced to do so, and so he storms off in a huff accompanied by a perky dominatrix. His other, less attractive, wife is killed by his brother (in disguise as him) during this sequence. Her death is never acknowledged by any character.

One of my friends got a tattoo today. He's been talking about it excitedly for weeks, now, but he hasn't explained what it was.

I didn't expect it to be this bad. And of course he posts the picture three hours after he gets home.

His words:

"For those of you who don't understand the tattoo,
the "kanji" and the symbol its about the elements, fire, water, air, earth.
The 5 points on the star represent the 4 main elements
and the 5th point going down represents "self".
The paw print is for my spirit animal.
Religiously, worship yourself and nature."

Couldn't tell you. I haven't seen it in person as he lives several hours away and I have no idea where he's put it.

I hope it is so that a year down the line when he realizes just how bad it is, it can easily be covered.

Do you want to point out to him that it says wind not air? I mean it's a minor thing, but since he seems to have some lovely homebrew religion based on his tat it might piss him off enought to get rid of it.

Edit: Nope, not at all. That's like saying, oh it's okay because it's a windplane or a windconditioner. You sound like a dumbass. Also specifically since this is probably some onmyodo bullshit because of the five pointed star he specifically wants 'air' not 'wind'.

Assuming he gets his spiritual views from video games, "wind" and "air" are both names for the same element. Let's not presume his beliefs go any deeper than that.

Air is more like 氣 whereas wind is more 風. There's considerable nuance.

:cripes: Memories from hanging out with guys who were a little to into swords and anime resurfacing...

Godai is the classical system of five elements in Japan. It's from Buddism, and there's some book about swordsmanship that uses it so it shows up in white dude bushido sometimes. Not sure if it uses the kanji for wind or the one for air, and I don't know why the fifth element, ether/spirit, is omitted all together. Let's see what a GIS brings up...
