Well, I don't think I agree with the thesis, so that's hard to say. Chomsky says "don't waste your time speculating that maybe the powers that be killed a guy in the absence of any evidence to support the claim." That seems so eminently sensible that it's completely bizarre to me to lead off with it as part of a section on how Chomsky is too dismissive of conspiracy theories. He leads with that, then he ends with this:

Well, OK then.

Agree. That part was strange.

he's half correct: obama is genuinely a nice guy who is great to hang out with, and the conspiracy people are partly correct, in that people in those leadership positions are ultimately parasitic

basically, nothing that people do is unintelligible, even if it seems that way - there is always a 'logic' to those actions, however many steps removed

Chomsky said a lot of things and yet doesn't have a unified theory of linguistics

isn't he still working on that

Chomsky does not seem to have grasped the idea that constantly calling America a "Terrorist State" would cause people to stop listening to him. That's pretty sad for a linguist.

The two books that have been attempting to assert that Chomsky's contributions to linguistics are false are straight-up hit pieces written by people who do not understand the basics of what they attempted to disprove:

Either you tell the truth or you won't be able to say anything at all. There's no easy way to say that the United States is the biggest state sponsor of terror in the world.

WRONG.

Grover Furr posted:

We now have much more evidence about the role of NKVD chief Nikolai Ezhov than we had in 2005. Ezhov, head of the NKVD (People’s Commissar for Internal Affairs), had his own conspiracy against the Soviet government and Party leadership. Ezhov had also been recruited by German intelligence.

Like the Rights and Trotskyites, Ezhov and his top NKVD men were counting on an invasion by Germany, Japan, or other major capitalist country. They tortured a great many innocent people into confessing to capital crimes so they would be shot. They executed a great many more on falsified grounds or no grounds at all.

Ezhov hoped that this mass murder of innocent people would turn large parts of the Soviet population against the government. That would create the basis for internal rebellions against the Soviet government when Germany or Japan attacked.

Ezhov lied to Stalin, the Party and government leaders about all this. The truly horrific mass executions of 1937-1938 of almost 680,000 people were in large part unjustifiable executions of innocent people carried out deliberately by Ezhov and his top men in order to sow discontent among the Soviet population.

Would a nice guy betray Comrade Stalin like that?

Depends on how you frame it. "Amerikkka is literally Hitler and you're Hitler for supporting it" is unproductive. "As Americans, we stand for freedom, democracy, and the inalienable rights of all people. So why does the government keep supporting people who clearly don't believe in that?" is good.

Well, sure, but that's still all a bunch of bunk. Yezhov didn't personally carry out the executions of almost 700,000 people as a conspiracy to undermine the Soviet Union. The Terror was being carried out by all sorts of low level officials and agents according to their own ends. Yezhov's problem is that he was conspiratorially minded because of his background in labor radicalism & the Red Guard, and he pursued the terror with too much zeal. He's still a secret policeman I could have a beer with.
