It says a lot about me that five seconds into the Tibia video, I thought "Yup, that is indeed an Ultima styled game." Twenty or so seconds "I've seen worse UIs, even within the Ultima games." Forty, and "Yup, that is indeed the result of players just leaving the poo poo they don't need in the castle, joy." Then I closed the vid at about 1:20 in, because yeah, this was indeed a '96 RPG (One might argue it was a '91 RPG that took way too bloody long to make, but quality varied even more wildly back then, even among the "big" developers.) We really did intend on trying to play more of Tibia, hopefully a full 20 or 30 minutes, but all of the poo poo you see in the video crushed my will to play, and Darcy probably wasn't interested in being stuck in a room for another 15 minutes. I still think it's interesting what people put up with in video games back in the day. I'm hoping The Lady is just the first among many of Darcy's creations to come out of games with good customization. Champions as a tabletop game seems interesting. Is it the best comic book / super hero tabletop RPG there is? Or are there universally better ones out there? Pear-Drop posted:

So, if you guys want to play tibia again. You'll need to make new accounts, and manually select the same server on the character creation page. I would also advise the download client over the flash client, since it will give help tips.

I still think it's interesting what people put up with in video games back in the day. *Chuckles* It's mostly because dem vidya games were still developing, and so was an idea of what was good. For example, Ultima VI (On which Tibia is mostly based, because the first five were more obviously tile based, and the next two kicked off an isometric trend) were praised for their accessibility as RPGs. Also that year was the first SMT game, "Wasteland 2" : Fountain of Dreams, and Megatraveller 1: The Zhodani Conspiracy, only one of which was first person, and one of which was infamous for being unfinished, rushed, and loving tedious to play (Megatraveller, where the sequel proudly proclaimed that only 50% or so of the skills didn't have a use in the game, as opposed to the 80% of the first one.) Cartoon Violence posted:I'm hoping The Lady is just the first among many of Darcy's creations to come out of games with good customization. Champions as a tabletop game seems interesting. Is it the best comic book / super hero tabletop RPG there is? Or are there universally better ones out there? Gaaaaaah, it really depends what you're looking for. For power customisation, there's not a lot that rivals it. But the D20 superheroes game, Mutants and Masterminds, is somewhat simpler, the official Marvel and DC RPGs have both gotten more accessible as the years have gone by (Although wavering in their stance on playing with The Beloved Canon a heckuva lot), and, for just getting an archetype down and having that superhero drama? The two Powered by Apocalypse games, Worlds in Peril and the recently released MASKS can't really be beat. And then, of course, there's Stuperpowers, which is dumb, has dumb powers, and justifies that in a very Mystery Men way (All the good heroes are dead and/or have hosed off, but the Villains were more sensible.) The only tabletop game I've played where I and a friend managed to kill Elvis by, respectively, giving him a 70s hairdo (Thus ruining his image, and turning him into an Elvis Impersonator, who isn't immortal, like The King obviously is), and then dropping a 60 foot tall toilet on him from the sky (My literal power. 60 foot toilet from sky.)

Considering the game draws from the Champions RPG setting, who knows - the good colonel might be an unwitting victim of Doctor Moreau (yes, they went there) and spliced him with some manner of amphibian, making him one of the many unfortunate Manimals. The game may be a theme park levelling experience with regards to its zones, but it makes the most from its salvaged initial basis from 'Marvel: The MMO' to its release state of being based on Champions' pen and paper materials.

I didnt think that deep into his background. He more or less came about from messing with the character creator while making a soldier. So he was once a soldier who licked a radioactive frog.

I played Champions when I was part of a multi-MMO Mormon guild and all I remember is PvP was stupid if you didn't put your super stats into straight attack or defense. I had a character who never ran out of MP but his attacks did nothing and a single hit from the super strength or super ability power guys turned him into a fine bloody mist.

Low framerates and one-use scrolls limit the adventures that a penguin and old-timey gangster have in the wonderful world of Shaiya! Slight warning. This is the first of 3 videos where my (Olivia's) audio got all messed up while recording, so I won't sound as clear as usual. That should clear up in a few videos. Welp. Another Aeria Games masterpiece to show off. I couldn't find any info on this thing from any English-speaking source other than those weird free MMO sites that drip feed praise onto every F2P thing to hit the market. I can tell you all that this is a tab-targetting game that somehow left out tab-targetting, at least when I played it in the video. Everything is janky and clunky. The framerate dips frequently for no reason. The game can't process you turning your character around. The texture work, gameplay, and overall feel of the game would've been forgiven had the game came out in the early 2000's, but according to Google this thing came out in 2007, around the same time as Bioshock, so no excuses. When making a character, they allow you to pick a difficulty mode, which I guess is unique for an MMO, but really it's just a switch for perma-death, which I'm sure is just exhilarating to have happen to you in practice. Now, to be fair, I think the game was trying to be similar to Lineage 2. I don't know why that comparison comes to mind, but it's what I thought of when I first popped into the game world. The weird thing is that I found Lineage 2's clunkiness to be charming, while this game it just irritated me. Maybe I've just been spoiled by games that do it better, but this is a definite pass if our video didn't make that clear enough.

To pour some gasoline on the fire that is Shaiya, I thought I'd mention that Aeria Games once gave you the option to bring back your toon/avatar if you chose a perma-death mode for $100. Yes, a real $100. I bet anyone can think of an infinite amount of things to do with a hundred bucks other than resurrect a toon from a horrible game. (To be fair, I'm not sure if they still do this or not. I haven't "played" Shaiya in years).

I wouldn't pay money to resurrect my character in a GOOD game with permadeath. $100 for a Shaiya character, this thread is making me learn new things about life that I'm not sure if I'm grateful for.
