Oh dear I've been told that my internship interviews don't start in December but in January, and that they wouldn't start until the summer.

Could I still squeeze in if this is the disabilities pool?

It ended up being a huge brouhaha, but not because of any reason you'd expect. He called the police and I'm like, "Dude there's almost no damage to my car and I'm not hurt. What's the deal?" Turns out he was our base's plainclothes detective in an unmarked GOV!
That dude is SO going to lose access to the GOV. And then be put on desk duty for a month while taking driving safety courses or something. Hah.

I love how the locality pay here in Chicago is only slightly less than SF/DC/NYC despite housing being waaaaay cheaper if you are living in a neighborhood not right next to the Loop.
Vermont still does not have locality pay (and now probably will not for who knows now long, after Obama undid the last year of locality changes, let alone approving new ones) and I paid the same amount for my apartment in a Burlington suburb that I did for an apartment in the DC suburbs. There is not really a great deal of logic involved in the locality pay system as far as I can tell, it is seemingly just all about which areas made the best arguments and when they made them.

If you want crazy low locality pay try Boston. I turned down an engineering supervisor position because all I could afford was a studio apartment in a bad neighborhood. Everyone in that office that owned a house was in their late 50s and bought like 30 years ago. I have no idea how they're going to fill that position.

He's lucky I'm unhurt. My rear bumper popped back out with minimal damage; it looks like most of the energy was absorbed by my tow hitch than anything else.

So my agency is going ahead with their plans to hire 800 IT Specialists during the next year. But instead of saying that we need those people to cover our backlog, etc., the execs are now talking about needing the bandwidth to cover security issues related to foreign governments attempting to hack our systems.

I'd say they've read the current political climate pretty well.

I had a WebEx interview with the Patent and Trademark Office. Sounds like they'll be making decisions in mid-January for an early February start.

Structured promotion to GS-14 is nice but even then compensation doesn't seem that great.

There's a few patent examiners that hang out in the lawyer and law school thread. They might be worth talking to. I know one makes bonus every quarter and it comes out to pretty good money, especially once you can work from home.

Automation/machine learning is starting to eliminate lots of "skilled" jobs as well, (yes I know this is not yet reflected in the official stats, but trust me it's happening) if you're gonna pivot might as well try something out of left field like show biz or art. If you have any shred of talent this is probably the best time ever to scare yourself shitless and take some big risks. Abandon all your education and career experience and start over, A+ solid BFC advice right here.

Are there any other good online federal job listing resources besides USAJOBS? I'm looking for a change in career and would like to move to Richmond, VA, but almost all the job listings there are for neurosurgeons and other medical professionals... a bit out of my area of expertise.

For what it's worth my current professional background is journalism/copy editing/digital so umm... there are days I don't feel like I'm skilled for much of anything. :|

Not quite what you're asking for... But If you're a journalist, especially if you have any foreign policy experience, then the USIC is always hiring, and unlike every other federal department, will probably continue to hire under a Trump administration.

And if you like Virgina, hoo boy. Every second block is another ex-CIA private intelligence startup.

United States intelligence community. DIA, INR, NSA, CIA, etc. Biggest assets you can bring if you're looking to work as an analyst are language skills and good writing. Seriously, if you can write well and think critically and get through a SF86, it's not a bad gig. And I know for a fact that lots of journalist types get hired, surprisingly enough, again, especially if you have any foreign policy or international relations expertise.

Also a masters degree. That's important too, I should add.

Is there a way to get anymore feedback from USA Jobs than "Not Referred"? Kinda hard to know what you're loving up when that's all the feedback you get.

USA Jobs just feels like pissing in the wind, and I'm getting tired of well meaning relatives suggesting that Agency X or Y is constantly in need of V and Z only to get no feedback other than "not referred"

I applied for separate Computer Engineer and Electrical Engineer patent examiner postings with the PTO. I received "referred to selecting official" emails for the postings on different days from different recruiters. I had a Skype interview for one of them (don't know which one) 3 weeks ago and was told I'd probably hear back in mid-January. I then received an email last week saying I had been referred to a hiring manager but not selected for the electrical engineer position. Should I assume the Skype interview was for the computer engineer position and I'm still in the running?

Edit: Welp, got a referred not selected for the computer engineer position.

Thanks, I'll check this out. I work in local news so no foreign journalism experience, sadly.

For me, it's pretty much Richmond or bust. I don't have any interest in working in the DC beltway. I lived in RVA for years, my wife's from there, it'd be a nice homecoming. I know the Federal Reserve is there, although I dunno if I have any qualifications that they'd be interested in.

Well, the FRS (.Org) is different from the FRB(.Gov). FRB is only DC based, while the FRS reserve banks are scattered across the country. The Board is a self-funded executive agency instead of a legislative one. This means we stay open when Ted Cruz has another sequester hissy fit.

And yeah, we only do our recruiting through https://www.federalreserve.gov/careers/

We don't follow GS scale per se (separate FR scale, available on the website), and I have no idea about what 'normal' gov't employment packages are so I can't say about that, but I've heard we're as good or possibly better in parts.

Promote Accountability and Government Efficiency Act

quote:

Summary of the Bill Requirements
Here is what this bill would contain if it was passed into law as it was introduced last September:

Civil service employees would be hired on an “at will” basis beginning one year after enactment. This would only apply to new federal employees. These employees could be removed or suspended by the agency head for good cause, bad cause, or no cause at all, without notice or right to appeal.
The bill specifies how an employee or applicant may seek a remedy under specified employment protection statutes with respect to an adverse personnel action.
The bill would allow an agency to suspend an employee for misconduct or poor performance. The employee could appeal to the Merit Systems Protection Board, which would not be allowed to reinstate the employee until a final decision is made. In the case of critical necessity, an agency could immediately replace a suspended employee.
An employee or applicant would not be allowed to appeal an adverse personnel action to more than one agency.
The bill would prohibit an employee from receiving a pay raise if an employee does not receive a score of four or five out of five (or an equivalent rating) on the latest performance review. A grievance filed by an employee covered by a union contract that results in an increased performance rating could not provide a raise in pay as a remedy.
An individual appointed to the civil service who is not subject to this bill’s requirements regarding at-will employment may not be paid an annuity or retired pay on the basis of such service if the individual was finally convicted of a felony offense: (1) when such individual was performing creditable service, or (2) after such individual has separated from service if such offense is related to the performance of his or her government position.
An agency may transfer an individual occupying a Senior Executive Service position who is not an at-will employee to a position within the General Schedule.
The bill: (1) would eliminate authorizing official time for an employee serving as an exclusive representative when negotiating a collective bargaining agreement, and (2) prohibit an employee from using government property in carrying out any activities relating to the internal business of a labor organization.

Things will be going down soon. I don't understand why the author of this article is confident that certain measures, like at will employment, won't pass. What's to stop them?
