Oh dear I've been told that my internship interviews don't start in December but in January, and that they wouldn't start until the summer. Could I still squeeze in if this is the disabilities pool?

If you want crazy low locality pay try Boston. I turned down an engineering supervisor position because all I could afford was a studio apartment in a bad neighborhood. Everyone in that office that owned a house was in their late 50s and bought like 30 years ago. I have no idea how they're going to fill that position.

So my agency is going ahead with their plans to hire 800 IT Specialists during the next year. But instead of saying that we need those people to cover our backlog, etc., the execs are now talking about needing the bandwidth to cover security issues related to foreign governments attempting to hack our systems. I'd say they've read the current political climate pretty well.

I had a WebEx interview with the Patent and Trademark Office. Sounds like they'll be making decisions in mid-January for an early February start. Structured promotion to GS-14 is nice but even then compensation doesn't seem that great.

There's a few patent examiners that hang out in the lawyer and law school thread. They might be worth talking to. I know one makes bonus every quarter and it comes out to pretty good money, especially once you can work from home.

Maybe this thread should hire a magic job expert person to tell us how to figure out what our extremely weird niche government job skills will allow us to do once all our jobs are eliminated for not being "a person with a gun watching foreigners." "What did you do before?" "Adjudication." "Ugh. Jeeze, And you do not have a law degree? Yeah, just file for unemployment and consider becoming a dealer. Next!"

Automation/machine learning is starting to eliminate lots of "skilled" jobs as well, (yes I know this is not yet reflected in the official stats, but trust me it's happening) if you're gonna pivot might as well try something out of left field like show biz or art. If you have any shred of talent this is probably the best time ever to scare yourself shitless and take some big risks. Abandon all your education and career experience and start over, A+ solid BFC advice right here.

Is it fair to assume the outlook for Park Service jobs and the like is, uh, not great? About to graduate with a degree in Environmental Ed and people in my major (and my friends in wildlife sciences and rec admin and such) usually end up in federal positions, at least for the summer following graduation.

Are there any other good online federal job listing resources besides USAJOBS? I'm looking for a change in career and would like to move to Richmond, VA, but almost all the job listings there are for neurosurgeons and other medical professionals... a bit out of my area of expertise. For what it's worth my current professional background is journalism/copy editing/digital so umm... there are days I don't feel like I'm skilled for much of anything. :|

Not quite what you're asking for... But If you're a journalist, especially if you have any foreign policy experience, then the USIC is always hiring, and unlike every other federal department, will probably continue to hire under a Trump administration. And if you like Virgina, hoo boy. Every second block is another ex-CIA private intelligence startup.

DIA, INR, NSA, CIA, etc. Biggest assets you can bring if you're looking to work as an analyst are language skills and good writing. Seriously, if you can write well and think critically and get through a SF86, it's not a bad gig. And I know for a fact that lots of journalist types get hired, surprisingly enough, again, especially if you have any foreign policy or international relations expertise. Also a masters degree. That's important too, I should add.

Is there a way to get anymore feedback from USA Jobs than "Not Referred"? Kinda hard to know what you're loving up when that's all the feedback you get. USA Jobs just feels like pissing in the wind, and I'm getting tired of well meaning relatives suggesting that Agency X or Y is constantly in need of V and Z only to get no feedback other than "not referred"

I applied for separate Computer Engineer and Electrical Engineer patent examiner postings with the PTO. I received "referred to selecting official" emails for the postings on different days from different recruiters. I had a Skype interview for one of them (don't know which one) 3 weeks ago and was told I'd probably hear back in mid-January. I then received an email last week saying I had been referred to a hiring manager but not selected for the electrical engineer position. Should I assume the Skype interview was for the computer engineer position and I'm still in the running? Edit: Welp, got a referred not selected for the computer engineer position. I'm looking at the deductions from my most recent paycheck in Employee Express. Does anyone know how Maryland local and state tax deductions are calculated if you're a resident who works in DC?
