Not the nicest thing to find when you remove a timing belt cover. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FlEiDj3kRdI The hydraulic tensioner failed after 150K kms (which is the belt change interval fortunately) and its obviously not been good. That explains why the cars down on power- having the valve train randomly going advanced or retarded cant be good for proper engine function!

Ferremit posted:Not the nicest thing to find when you remove a timing belt cover. I'd say you caught that just in time. I've had a car jump time from a failed tensioner before, and it wasn't fun. Thankfully only by 1 tooth, according to the shop that fixed it, so no damage, but it died in its tracks and wouldn't start. Oh yeah... only about 10k or 20k miles on the tensioner and timing belt too, but it was done before I got the car and the PO didn't have the receipt from the work.

Seems this is becoming a huge, common issue. GM has a serious problem with the 1.5L turbocharged 4 in some of their new cars, this is showing up as early as 20k miles. e: and here's a video of the obscene blowby you get when this happens https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5JZzPz9nnW0 Turns out GM warranty procedure right now is to just slam another piston in and button it back up. Techs have got to be happy, they will get an assload of work out of replacing all the pistons one at a time, unsure what will happen when they start breaking the new pistons or the car goes out of warranty though. kastein fucked around with this message at 21:16 on Dec 12, 2016 |

Broken ringlands from a piston that is too brittle and an ecu that leans too heavily on the knock sensor. See also: Subaru 2.5 turbos.

The Equinox has a pretty assfucked engine too. Since you can't overbore GM is paying basically to chuck new shortblocks in. If the timing chain has also failed and started eating into the head, they pay for a new longblock. Some dealers are so saturated doing Equinox engine swaps that they have no room for anything else.

I really want everyone to get beyond turbos for "normal" cars. They fun in fun cars, but chasing boost leaks over 100k mi is annoying and replacing pistons sucks rear end. The real world FE isn't even really all that much better.

Just watched the video, and wow, that's a big hole in a piston. On a Subaru, if I saw 7-9% on a leakdown test I'd be finding cracked ringlands, but the car would drive normally, maybe not misfire, and just go through a bit of oil. Here's one from an ej20 that I think cracked the vacuum line from the manifold to the fuel pressure regulator resulting in an overly lean condition:
