It's all licensing. Netflix not being subject to CanCon (because how the gently caress would that even work) is one of the things the Canadian cable companies constantly complain about.

Canada’s aging cab drivers fear the rise of ride-hailing apps like Uber will render their pricey government-issued operating permits worthless. Many are counting on selling them at a profit to provide a nest egg for retirement.

Nick Matsoukas, a 77-year-old Montreal taxi driver with four decades experience, has been trying to sell his permit for several months so he can retire.

“Nobody is buying,” he told CTV News. “There is no price. You can’t find anybody to buy a permit.”

Can't wait until we get CanCon at the user-level due to improved technological tracking and everyone has to watch their quota of Canadian content before watching the shows they are actually interested in.

This is also bullshit. There is always a price. You just don't like it.

Keep holding on for a few more years though while it continues to depreciate until you are forced to sell for even less.

It took 15 minutes to reach a cab company by phone, and then 60 minutes for the cab to actually arrive, when I called one for my friend last night. It was well before last call when I phoned, too, and I was looking for a cab to go from one end of downtown into the Beltline, not in some far-flung suburb, and the cab would've been able to get another fare 10 minutes later.

The cab companies have made their bed and now they have to lie in it. If they're going to bitch about it now, I'll play the world's tiniest violin for them (when they finally loving show up).

Looks like they may have rescinded on this because they were initially not showing any desire to pounce on this.

http://globalnews.ca/news/2386933/vancouver-taxi-association-applies-to-have-more-cabs-on-the-road/

But the article is unclear about whether or not it is specifically about the ongoing battle to get 200+ more taxis on the road or the temporary increase that the CoV put in.

However, taxis are running the show:

The Prime Minister's office put out these ethical guidelines last fall:

quote:

Annex B Fundraising and Dealing with Lobbyists: Best Practices for Ministers and Parliamentary Secretaries
Ministers and Parliamentary Secretaries must avoid conflict of interest, the appearance of conflict of interest and situations that have the potential to involve conflicts of interest.

General Principles
Ministers and Parliamentary Secretaries must ensure that political fundraising activities or considerations do not affect, or appear to affect, the exercise of their official duties or the access of individuals or organizations to government.

There should be no preferential access to government, or appearance of preferential access, accorded to individuals or organizations because they have made financial contributions to politicians and political parties.

Specific Best Practices
Ministers, Parliamentary Secretaries and their staff should not discuss departmental business at any fundraising event, and should refer any person who wishes to discuss departmental business to make an appointment with the Minister’s office or department as appropriate.

Ministers and Parliamentary Secretaries should ensure that fundraising communications issued on their behalf do not suggest any connection between fundraising and official government business.

Ministers, Parliamentary Secretaries and their staff should exercise caution in meeting with consultant lobbyists, and should give particular consideration to whether it is appropriate to meet a consultant lobbyist in the absence of the lobbyist’s client.

"I simply want to wait til the natural Darwinian forces of finance roll through their lines," O'Leary said Monday. "We can't have 15, 16, 17 people in a debate. It makes no sense. You get 20-second soundbites."

But the celebrity investor suggested he's serious about running.

"I'm in business. I don't like to waste my time. I've already invested heavily in getting the support, the infrastructure, the legal advice I need," O'Leary said.

"Do I have a name recognition problem? Don't have that problem. Do I have a money problem? Don't have that problem. What I have as a problem is too many people in the race. Why don't I wait?"

All I'm saying is that he's a blindly self interested, demonstrably unreasonable idiot and that if he's going to try to insert himself into a position where he'll be able to directly make or affect policies that negatively impact tons of people, then death would likely the only thing in his life he's actually worked to earn

I mean yes it's more specific than the kind of casual disregard for human life that people like him foster but I like to think my hatred is earned since it comes from a warm, fuzzy place
