Electric Boogaloo is an excellent documentary. It's on Netflix for anyone interested. I didn't know jack poo poo about canon films and I've maybe seen one or two movies they made, it's loving a fascinating look into a really weird time in hollywood.

Honestly, I don't think she was really given the chance to be anything but bad for most of TNG. I mean her episodes had a disturbing amount of weird space rape in them.

Yeah, it's no real slight against her, almost every Troi story or episode is garbage. Dr. Crusher only gets slightly better episodes, but even then hers are bad. It's definitely a sign of the sexist past that the women on the show generally have episodes relating to romance or other 'girls stuff'.

It gets a bit better in DS9 because Kira doesn't give a gently caress and Dax is pretty cool.

The best Troi scene in all of TNG is her reaction to Barclay's holo program.

Also her character improved significantly after she got to wear a full uniform instead of space pajamas. It's really telling that she initially "had" to wear it on account of hardass Captain Jellico (or whatever) ordering her to... but then just kept it wearing it until the end of the show. I have a feeling Sirtis just requested to keep it because it made her character so much more respectable.

I've seen interviews where she talks about it, she was thrilled to be dressed like a normal person for once. Wasn't she a high level officer, like commander or something at that stage?

After DS9 Love Boat they hit you with DS9 Schindler's List - the Odo relives through some time/space BS having 3 innocent men executed episode. Pretty good but wife deemed it a real downer. Kira confronting Odo at the end was strong too. Finally, it's cool to see the Cardassian occupation in full swing. But yeah, it was dark other than them wondering if killing Quark would alter the timeline heavily.

After reading about how Brooks didn't like most of his cast mates I couldn't help but watch him a little differently. Also a downer.

Yeah Jellicoe ordering Troi to just wear the standard uniform seemed like correcting an exception that didn't need to exist. I think I've said this before, but I've always been underwhelmed by women's clothing of the future. You'd think a post-scarcity society with matter conversion, transporters, replicators and full gravity control could come up with something better than an underwire bra. I mean jeez those things are uncomfortable by today's standards, you'd think the federation would see them as hideously archaic.

I'm almost through the Enterprise section in the 50 year books. Holy poo poo gently caress Rick Berman.
All the writers were stressed to poo poo because Rick was never there, he had Braga as the show runner but had veto over everything. Braga was also insane amount sounds, you couldn't have any remotely crunchy snacks in the entire office or he'd flip out. He also couldn't stand to sit at a table or talk to more than 1-2 other people at a time so the whole "writers room" didn't work out as a normally does with people bouncing ideas. If you had an idea you had to set up a meeting and visit him one on one, he'd then say that was a great idea, go write. You'd go write, other writers would maybe help, then you'd go back to Braga and he'd love it, have some suggestions, and you'd re-write. Then you'd submit again and Braga would say "Sorry rick veto'd it, it's not proper trek to him, you depicted a Vulcan behaving in a not 100% ethical way, PS you're maybe fired". So every writer was constantly afraid they'd be fired at any moment, they knew rick constantly vetoed entire plots but they never quite knew why.

It's funny, I started these books at the DS9 chapter, then read Voyager, and now Enterprise and it's 3 entire series cetered around fighting Rick Berman to desperately try to make a good show. DS9 was the most independant from Berman so it turned out good although he still fought against every good thing that came to define why DS9 was great. Voyager and Enterprise he had total control so could shoot down every good idea, fire any writer who wrote outside the trek box, and micro-manage every plot line to ensure no character growth and his personal crusade against serialization in any form.

Yeah they are extremely good. They interview basically everyone related to each show, actors, producers, writers, everyone. You can piece together a sort of "truth is in the middle" from all their stories and it all reflects extremely poorly on Rick Berman. And its usually not what other people say about him or try to blame on him, it's his own quotes that are the most damning.

Nah those aren't true trek fans, those are bad people who don't "get" what trek is about, which means "exactly like TNG". If it's not TNG it's not trek. DS9 had worse numbers than TNG, this proves that self-contained episodic adventures of a ship full of beige people with no tension or character development is what trek is about. Also no gays and you need handsome leading white men.
