SwissCM posted:The Oculus tracking solution doesn't scale well, it's what pretty much everyone has known from the start. It's just about enough for a small room, but as soon as you start considering commercial applications then things get a little more complicated. Mixed reality could be a problem, pushing even more HD video through the USB bus in addition to all the tracking would cause problems on many configurations. Wireless/large scale installations are also a lot more difficult to implement with optical outside-in tracking. I guess it depends on what's under the hood of their Santa Cruz prototype. Don't think they gave any specifics

So that's....something, I suppose. And that's with the current lovely cartoon graphics they both use. I too am really concerned with no longer being able to treat people on the internet as if they were, in fact, not people. A large part of my socialization comes directly from being unable to socialise and instead running amok on anonymous boards where there nothing that happens affects real people or matters at all, save for the several notable times where those things were extremely patently untrue. I don't think I can really do things like rec room. You want to play basketball? and I have the ball? Maybe I will just hold onto it forever. Maybe instead I will soliloquise on the better parts of valour. If VR teaches me human empathy, I will be requesting a refund.

Lighthouse is nice for that but my room with a reflective closet door and multiple pictures makes that a non starter.

VR cover + thin foam/interface trip report: surprisingly ok given what I've heard about these guys. The cover seems comfortable and I don't have problems with it getting pulled off the foam. The thinner foam barely increases FOV but it's more comfortable than Oculus' packing material style cushion to me. Worth it overall if nothing special.

Repeating what I said in the Vive thread: loving Gorn man. What a fun game. Shoot a guy with an arrow, pull the arrow out as he staggers back, stab another guy in the eye with it, use it as a handle to fling the second guy over your head and slam him down on the first guy. Cut off limbs, punch people in the face until they are a bloody pulp, grab someones weapon hand as they swing at you and force the blade into their own head, then throw it like a frisbee and cut off both legs at the knee of the guy advancing on you from behind. So much drat fun.

My GOD...these controllers. I knew Vivers were onto something with tracked hands but...gently caress. Has anyone else played "I expect you to die"? That intro scene was mind blowing. Superhot rules, dead and buried rules, Unspoken also rules. I haven't even gotten through all the games I have, I feel so flush with content. Question though, has anyone had issues with their oculus friends list? We tried to do some multiplayer in toybox and ripcoil but the invite list would show up as blank.

How long of an extension cable can you get away with for the Oculus cameras? I brought a 6.5 feet USB 3.0 cable from Amazon and it pretty much kills tracking while plugging the thing in through two 2.0 cables works fine.

I use these 15ft Active 3.0 cables, one for each camera and one for the Rift, which works great. I wasn't able to keep daisy chaining them though: https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=9470 Edit: Also, someone pointed me to some expensive Monoprice optical cables, they can go up to 200ft. The HDMI is pure optical, the USB uses optical for data and still has copper in it to carry wattage, so theoretically, this would be way to have super lightweight, long, and durable (the optical cables are a durable polymer plastic, not glass like normal optical cables) way to extend the Rift. I need to buy some to set up a conference room at work anyways, so I'll try them out with my Rift and see how it goes. http://www.monoprice.com/search/index?keyword=slimrun+optical Zero VGS fucked around with this message at 01:02 on Dec 15, 2016 |

The dispel censer is good for that, but unless they also have some other pressure (ie some other crystal abilities to hit you with while you're stuck on one platform), you can hit them with your regular attack too. A few charged hits should take one out, and usually you only really need to teleport between two platforms. After a while it'll only take one hit to destroy them. You don't take too much damage from standing on them, so it's usually still worth it to jump to a tentacle platform to grab a crystal as long as you jump off right away.

The only problem with that is that I have terrible aim and sit there trying to kill these tentacles while my opponent happily chips me away. But that's probably on me.

Welp, I am now the owner of a brand-spanking-new CV1. Thinking about waiting till the new year for Touch, though, as I don't want it to wind up sitting on my front porch for a week while I'm at my parents' place. Are there any free games included that I might miss out on by waiting? Also, someone should compile a list of recommended VR games for the OP. I would, but .

If you like space shooty games House of the Dying Sun (formerly enemy starfighter) has an absolutely fantastic VR implementation and is really easy to get into and play. I never played it before but once I discovered it was on Steam (rift compatible) I bought and have been playing the gently caress out of it.

I'd wait though, it's likely that Oculus is going to have a winter sale and while I imagine that a lot of Touch games won't be on sale, I could see them putting the regular gamepad games on sale. There isn't a set date for when it's going to start, but previously they have timed it to compete with the Steam sales, which this year starts Dec 23.

I expect you to die is also playable with a mouse or a gamepad. You don't need touch to play it, thought it makes it more immersive.

AndrewP posted:How do you counter the loving tentacle/root/whatever spell that eats up most of your platforms? Every game now someone uses that on me immediately and I get crushed It takes two primal attacks to kill tentacles and it's not worth the opportunity cost imo. It's better to keep on the offensive until it runs out and only TP if you see a seed. I'm comparable based on lemming's vid of his play, I don't know what rank I was but I matched with a few of the devs during that dev hour thing before I got a new ssd and reinstalled (rank & unlocks are saved local?! wtf!). I'm slowly working my way up the ranks, I'm somewhere in the 200s right now. For a while I liked the trickster and even though their push attack is stronger it's too hard to target the daggers at long range and way too easy to miss. Maybe with more practice they'd be useful but since you can arc the fireballs behind barriers to hit people I think anarchist just plain more useful than the other classes. It's hard to overstate the damage the trickster shield + push damage ability does though! It's unfortunately way too weak to everyone else's seed aoe abilities, and you kind of need 3 seeds to make the shell game worthwhile. I'd record some videos myself but I'm pretty sure my computer can't handle it either. Bhodi fucked around with this message at 05:20 on Dec 15, 2016 |

VR games are expensive and you might not even wanna go back to them once the Touch controllers comes. House of the Dying Sun is worth getting, a lot of people seem to like Chronos. You probably already know if you want Elite or not, and if you have a HOTAS, War Thunder is fun to mess around in. Same with Project Cars/Dirt Rally if you have some kind of wheel. But really, just get Touch ASAP.

Thanks for the recommendations, all. Just tried Lucky's Tale, and I don't understand why so many people here were "meh" about it. It's a pretty bog-standard 3D platformer, sure, and derivative as all get-out, but I feel that VR adds a lot to the experience, and Lucky himself is an appealing character (or maybe I just like foxes). The miniature town scene in Dreamdeck is far and away my favorite of the bunch, and this game looks enough like a miniature set come to life that it presses my "cool!" button in the same way - especially the underground bits. For a free game included with the hardware, it's more than satisfactory.
