Just cus every time it comes up people gush, I'm going to point out that most physical keyboards on phones were dumb and I'd gladly give up that bulk considering it provided basically no benefit.

Also, swype-style keyboards are dumb, and I hate everything.

(No, seriously, I just think on screen keyboards are done really well, and there might be a lot of comparison to at-the-time onscreen keyboards, which were poo poo at the time?)

Due to a work-related thing I just had to use an old-style Nokia phone to text for the first time in, like, 10 years. Without thinking, I just began to smash out text like it was 2001 and I had my old 3210 at my fingertips. Some things really are like riding a bicycle.

My Samsung U470 wasn't so bad. It was the last phone I had before I got my first smartphone.

The screen could be opened like that for full keyboard support or opened like any old clamshell phone when making calls. ez pz

T9 predictive text worked really well and could be done (well, had to be done) one handed, and could even be done without looking once you became proficient at it. I kind of miss it.

Exactly. My blackberry keyboard was the best thing ever. Touch screens are in no way better, its just the price you pay for getting a full size screen. Just try to play a game that has an on-screen dpad and buttons. It works but is not comparable to actual buttons.

Those keys look cramped as hell. I was rocking one of these back in 2010 or 2011

Much better spacing and size on the keys. They were a bit spongy but writing text with this thing was an absolute breeze

Really easy actually. I had sidekicks long enough I could touch type on them, which was really funny to do while firing off a quick message and looking at someone talking. It was almost always weird them the gently caress out. They'd stop mid sentence and ask me if indeed yeah I was replying to someone else and listening to them. I miss the dumb things so much, pure touchscreen phones are so blah.

Sorry I can't be a whole lot of help with this, mostly because everthing on the drat thing is in Japanese. I just pulled it out to take a look.

The apps it came with are all mostly standard fare for a flip phone like that: camera, web browser, calc, kanji dictionary, some game demos and the like. It does have access to a web store to download new apps and games, and I'm not sure if you can load your own, it had a data cable available but I didn't bother to buy one.

One interesting thing is it had a suite of services all tied into Yahoo!, including some strange TV streaming service I never got to work.

I had a pay as you go plan over there, so I didn't have a data plan really, but the phone was actually totally free with my $10/mo no contract plan so you could probably take the plunge and find that model online for extremely cheap.

From wrist to tip my hands are an inch or two longer than my Nexus 5x. I don't spend a lot of time comparing my hands to other people's, so I dunno?

I've just never really had a physical keyboard that was so noticeably better than any reasonably modern on-screen keyboard that I felt nostalgic for the days of my Samsung Intercept or this hilarious abomination. To me, there as much a hack as Side-talkin' was.

So yes, you have tiny, child-like hands.

I could type much more efficiently on my LG Envy 2 or Ally than I can using an onscreen keyboard, even with Swype. Also, losing screen space to have a keyboard is just a pain in the rear end in general.

Are the Japanese still rocking flip phones? I noticed they weren't all that into smartphones like the iPhone. I used to be envious of the Japanese market because they had cool phone tech the West could only dream of at the time.

Eh, I'm no expert. I only lived there for two years from early 2014 to the end of 2015 and just being out and about it seemed that iPhones and Samsung Galaxy phones were extremely popular among the younger crowds, but it seemed that flip phones were still relevant as well. They had a huge selection of flip phones at the SoftBank I got my piece of poo poo at, and some of them were really robust, too, featuring touch screens, HD screens and other typical smartphone features. You don't really see that too much here in the US, but i think the flip phone is slowly but surely dying out over there as well.

It's mostly just that phones were insanely awesome everywhere else in the world, and it's only now that the US has caught up. Finland, for example, has had an Apple/Android Pay-like system since the 90s.

It's a stretch - but does anyone here have personal experience with Laserdisk mastering? I wouldn't mind teaming up for a project. Unless I find a Panasonic TQ3031F and do it myself that is.

EDIT: That Panasonic model number seems to be recycled to something unrelated nowadays.
