One of my old NCOs switched from the band. After hearing a few of his stories, I think it is one of the few not completely horrible jobs in the military. Anytime we would get stupid orders I would tell him how horrible of a mistake he had made reclassify.

It's a pretty chill job. As far as Army bullshit levels go, the band is definitely on the low end of the spectrum, though it varies by location (lol Korea). No CQ or staff duty, we never go to the field, and people assume you're an adult until you give them a solid reason to treat you otherwise. PT in small groups, have a morning formation, get your work done, go home. Have to come in for an hour or two for a gig on a weekend? You get the following Monday or the next Friday off. I mean, it's still the Army, so that part blows, but most days I feel like something resembling a functioning adult human being so it could be worse.

Legit thing: serial podcast season 2 is about Bergdahl. They weren't apologetic, but I'm glad I listened to it. Dude is honestly crazy, and it's kind of sad. But I can totally see and understand his frustration at his instigating situation. His method of solving it was totally, totally wrong and dangerous and possibly killed others, though, and for that he should probably burn. Five years' worth mandatory training is a fair trade for capital punishment.

It's even worse if an important position is captured, locked up abroad, etc. It's no fun having a key senior staff position or other important position vacant for years, but HRC says it's a leadership problem and won't provide a fill, because maybe they'll be back one day. And also why haven't they done their PHA?

Almost. In my experience the red slides for poo poo like PHA or dental or whatever quickly get dismissed. And since he was a private at the time, the lack of fill doesn't really suck. But when someone like your only logistician or the S1 NCOIC or an XO is missing or incarcerated for years and HRC won't give you a fill, it can suck.

Both seasons of Serial have been fantastic. I know season three is supposed to be about Fugazi, which seems like it could be really interesting as well. As far as Bergdahl, he definitely was unfit for duty, and it's unfortunate that he was allowed to serve, because it ultimately got Soldiers killed needlessly. I am sympathetic to the guy, as I can barely fathom being a POW of HQN, so I think he basically has time served. No additional sentencing is going to bring back the lives that were lost, and I don't believe he did any of his action with malice towards his fellow Soldiers.

While I agree that being a POW for five years is good for time served, but I still think he should face time stateside. To me, the five years he spent being held was an idiot tax, and he should still face time for his actions. I will also admit that I might be projecting because, while his actions had no effect on me personally, I was offended and pissed by his dumb rear end decisions. But I am a big idiot.

What made the most sense to me is that his time being captured would be punishment enough in terms of time, but they shouldn't give him the $300,000 or so in backpay that he would be owed, since he went AWOL before being captured.

Bowie, At least six in his unit died looking for him during rescue operations IIRC. There are at least two that the panel is hearing arguments on if they will be allowed to testify. One with TBI due to a gsw to the head. gently caress this dude and his hippy parents

Task and Purpose Radio podcast followed Serial season 2 and added to episodes, critiqued, etc. The panel is the host, who as far as I know was never military, an ETS-d infantry officer who was in the battalion at the time, and a retired Marine JAG officer to cover the legal aspects. I recommend those episodes.

Our OPS SGM is really chill and regularly calls out dumb Army stuff for being stupid, puts his hands in his pockets, etc. Still mystified how he made it through the SGM's Academy. He's about to go to another unit and become a CSM, maybe a switch will flip inside him once he gets there.
