I'm also tempted by this tablet, but I'm worried about updates. ASUS are saying they will update it, but afaik there's no date set, so it'd come out of date out of the box.

I'm actually starting to lean towards an Ipad Air 2. Target is selling the 128gb model for $400 at this point the things I tend to care about is software updates when it comes to the operating systems. The fact that almost none of the Android tablets are actually supported for all that long is kinda disappointing when you want to own a tablet for 3-4 years. Plus most of the apps I want to use are supported on both platforms (Amazon Video, youtube, awful, maybe some spotify).

Also wanted to mention that the Pixel C is having a deal where the 64 gb model is the same as the 32 gb model if anyone was interested.

Pixel deal would be fairly interesting. Unfortunately, the Pixel C has never been available in my country, except with overpriced imports, or I would already have one probably. I have a ton of android games via humble bundles and such that i'd like to play on a tablet, so ipads are no go for me :(

Yea, unfortunately, Android for tablets isn't exactly great. I've never had any issues with phones since after 2 years or so, I start to want a new one and the Pixel phone does the job nicely. But with a tablet, I want something that will last for a little while. I don't think any of the Android tablets outside of the pixel c have much support from the OEMs. Though fwiw, ASUS has promised the 3S 10 will get Android 7.0 and the 8" version just got upgraded to 6.0

I have the Surface 3 with 2GB of RAM and it's pretty snappy for most things, so I'd say go for it.

I got a SP4 with i5/8GB and its pretty dope! Replaced my MacBook for sure.

Also, I did the in store deal where you get the cover and the Surface for like $1000 (its like $1500 normal) and then returned the keyboard for $100 back because I hated the type cover and if I REALLY needed to type a lot of stuff I'd just plug in a keyboard at work, or use the virtual keyboard like normal.

Good purchase, would do again. Hate Cortana.

I've got no issues with the i5 + 4GB of ram most of the time, but a few PDF programs get kinda lovely if I draw a lot on them but I'm blaming drawboard being garbage over the tablet.

How shady is it to buy 3rd party power supplies for tablets? The charger for my surface pro 1 got a tear and started smoking/burning so I need a new one but the official microsoft one is like $40 on amazon so I was wondering how much of a risk it would be spending $15 on something else.

Can't answer about third party but when we need a charger we hit up nearby thrift stores. Most of them have boxes and boxes of chargers for around $3-5 each.

Just take note of the number of amps the official charger outputs, then buy one that outputs that amount. If you go less then your tablet will charge very slowly or not at all.

Cheap chargers run the risk of cost cutting to the point of being actively harmful to the device. Very common with smartphone chargers. If it's a device I care about I'd rather spend a little extra on the charger than a lot more on a replacement device.

For a SP1 charger though you're limited by the proprietary plug shape so I don't know what your options are. Maybe if you call Microsoft they'll have old stuff to unload cheap?

I'm increasingly leaning towards getting the Asus s3 10. Worse updates is sad, but being behind/running custom ROMs is more okay to me in a tablet where I'll put games, and not have all my stuff like on the phone.

Is there any real hope of a new Google tablet I could hold out for newbies on, or should I just go for it?

My wife has a Nook HD that she has used to it's very end. It's been a workhorse since we got it for a steal when they discontinued them. She's currently using Google for all of her book purchases, so she'd like to go with something Android that isn't a Kindle. Battery life, about a 8 or 9" screen would be cool. Mostly used for reading books, or playing around on Instagram or light browsing, that sort of thing. Maybe around $200-$250, and will be good for the next 3 or 4 years.

Is the Nvidia Shield worth looking into at all, these days? I'd like to get a tablet with decent screen real estate, but all I really know about tablets in general is that I don't want an iPad (out of my budget, don't care for the issues friends have had) and that the cheap ones are cheap for a reason. The Shield mainly sticks in my mind because it always pops up during video driver updates. Go advertising.

Okay, so the latest death this year is my much loved 2013 Nexus 7 that landed face down on a concrete floor half an hour ago shattering the screen. R.I.P.

Google were rumoured to be bringing out a new version of the N7 (Huawei, I think), but that's amounted to nothing. I take it there's nothing around or coming to be released soon in a 7 or 8 inch Android format?

There are constant rumors about a new Nexus 7, but thus far Google has announced nothing. The implication from a lot of them is that it will be a Pixel 7, which means it'll probably be higher-end (and significantly more expensive) than the 2013 Nexus 7, but again, nothing has been announced.

I feel like that'd be a misstep; with the Android tablet ecosystem floundering so badly, they need to push further into a space where they can bring up the viability of Android tablets before they go for the high-end.

Yes, instead of trying to get people to recognize Android tablets as a premium product that people want to own, they should make the same disposable garbage-tier thing you can get for $50 in the supermarket. This is definitely the way to success.

You guys have some weird obsession for paying hundreds of dollar for sweatshop tablets that billionaires manufacture for $10.00

At least Amazon has the right idea that selling cheap tablets is a gateway for consumers to buy more stuff from them

Google Shopping is a mess and since Google has nothing to upsell they're just kind of floundering

That's more or less what I'm looking to do. Browsing, media, word processing with an add-on keyboard. I'm not really hot on mobile gaming, but I like to remote in to my home machine when I'm out and on wifi. Used to do it with an old laptop, and my phone does a surprisingly decent job as a remote, but the screen and software keyboard are tiny.

For anyone who has a Surface 3 and a failed power cable, you need a replacement with a thicker pair of power wires to get it to actually charge properly. I read 24 awg on the power lines, I found this cable from Anker actually did the job even from another USB port which I never got the "official" one to really charge from.

WHAT CAN THE HARVEST HOPE FOR, IF NOT FOR THE CARE OF THE REAPER MAN?
My partner is looking to replace their lovely old laptop with a tablet soon and we're hoping to find some good recomendations.

Our budget goes up to $600 NZD (~$400 USD) and ideally we're hoping to find something with a decent keyboard accessory, and with either enough internal memory for all their files (mostly music) or something that works easily with external memory. They don't use their laptop for anything particularly intensive so it doesn't need to be the fastest thing, so if it can have music running and an internet browser or Word document open too that's likely to be good enough. Probably looking to stick with the familiar and get a Windows laptop. They're quite fond of the idea of 2-in-1 tablets but most of the ones we've looked at don't have the best reviews.

Anybody able to point us in the right direction?

Im also in the market for a Nexus 7 replacement.
The 2012 model I have is close to death as it can only charge when its completely powered off, and can only properly function if I open estask manager and kill all processes (I also only have 3 apps installed, aside from all of googles). I primarily used my nexus 7 for reading, browsing and occasional games (puzzle and dragons really)

I was looking into the shield k1 because for 200 bux, it seems like a decent replacement. There are only 3 drawbacks I see from this
-Heavier than a nexus 7
-Might have worse battery life
-Lack of updates

Is there a general consensus for an unofficial replacement for a nexus 7?
All signs point to the k1 from what Ive been reading.

The Android tablet market is a wet fart right now. You have a choice of being Samsunged, getting an abandoned Nvidia, getting a Pixel C which is not the same form factor at all, or getting some supermarket POS for $50.

There are a few newish Android offerings like the Huawei MediaPad M3 and the Asus ZenPad 3S 10, but from what I can tell they both have incredibly awful software. (On an Android tablet? Surprise.)

I actually just bought a Lenovo Tab3 8, which is probably a notch above the supermarket chinashit level, but it still has a horrible MediaTek chip and 1GB of RAM. I use it to read eBooks and gently caress around on the web, and it's fine for that, but anything else and it'll choke.

It does have a good quality screen and good speakers - especially considering it only costs $100-110. I wasn't wanting to risk spending more money on a probably equally lovely tablet.

General question: hotspotting my phone vs getting a 4g capable tablet.

I'm thinking of getting a tablet that I'd use mostly where there is no usable wifi :negative:

However, I've noticed in a cursory search that (at least in Android) requiring 4g really cuts down on choices and ups the price.

Is it easy enough to just hotspot my (nexus 5x) phone every day and use that as my connection? Or will that be annoying enough that i should really be trying to get a 4g tablet?

If the latter, any recommendations for a ~200 usd tablet with 4g that is good enough for browsing, email, the occasional google spreadsheet, and (of course) forums?
