Grandmother of Five posted:sci-fi and fantasy should be considered settings, not genres. that goes for other genres that only define the setting and not the narrative; like westerns and other period pieces. these genres are often and rightfully considered trashy because great literature transcends their setting instead of being defined by it. Definetly agree with this. I enjoy both as a setting. Sci fi I enjoy probably more than any other setting. I'd much rather watch something like Alien or Moon or Blade Runner or Mad Max etc. than some drawn out info dump. All of those stories stand on their own but use sci fi to elevate them. A lot of sci fi and fantasy confuses tmi with being good.

I was trying to think of how best to say, "I only like sci fi if it's the lesser classification of the genre," but referring to it as a setting instead really clarifies the idea. Alien and Moon were excellent not because they were sci fi, but because they used sci fi elements to strengthen the important factors of their primary genre. They both use sci fi to amplify the loneliness and helplessness of a horror and psychological drama rather than using technology as magic.

Yeah and I really like it. I'm no fan of the old guard 'future history' type stuff though, and that often seems to be what people mean when they call for serious exploration of technology. At least when it gets to the point of 'xyz isn't real sci fi'.

News shouldn't give up time for sports, I tuned in to learn what's going on in the world not some uninteresting crap about some twat making their first century. Public funds shouldn't be spent on sports unless it's things like public grounds everybody can use. Sports fans are really sensitive to criticism for some weird reason, and lastly Russian dashcams are boring, I get why people watch them but there is something about Russian ones I just find unappealing.

Unpopular Replacements Opinion: Everything they did after Bob Stinson druggied out of the band was pretty mediocre at best, and their last couple albums were just plain bad. Which is really depressing because everything up to and including Let It Be was brilliant. Possibly Unpopular Replacements Opinion: everything Nirvana did and won accolades/massive sales for, the 'Mats did first and better.

The "basic income" idea is flawed because people do need to have tasks. If they don't, they flounder. It doesn't matter if the task is ultimately of any use, as long as they think it is of some use. That said, people aren't being given a fair income to survive on, and this undercuts the entire system which relies on a perception of fairness.
