The strange thing is that certain aspects of the color grading are better in the SE versions or the DVD releases than the BR ones, and vice-versa. They clearly weren't using their grading on a case-by-case basis.

They're built off something like 4-5 different film reel versions (different film sizes) and the laserdisc releases, iirc.

There's a straight 35mm original Star Wars print floating around. Like, that very first theatrical release. The followup theatrical releases from the following few years already had changes made to them by Lucas, so it was a very cool find. It was DMCA'd very quickly but it definitely exists.

I’ve felt a few different stages of isolation through my review career.

I started reviewing because my day job (divorce law involving domestic violence victims) was so grim that I found comfort in talking about bad movies online with other people.

Then I lost my job and it was even worse for a month or two. I volunteered at a nonprofit just to get out and talk to people (and get another resume line).

Then I moved halfway across the world. It was good for real-life social interactions, because all the other Americans here have been in the same boat I’m in, but not so good for review work, because I’m isolated enough from current culture that I’ve fallen behind on references.

Now I’ve got a reasonably good social life—even though my best friend is moving away soon, as so often happens in the islands—but I’m so far out of the loop that not even my friends read my work any more. I’ll probably stop reviewing and work on another hobby within the next few months.

Yeah, that's the one I was thinking of. Co-worker had a copy of it and we were watching some of it. It's got the occasional speck on it but it looked pretty good and could be cleaned up if people wanted the film artifacts removed. Also had a bit of a color cast iirc, but I think that only stuck out because we're used to a different white balance standard now.

I'm not an internet reviewer but I can definitely empathize with this. I did freelance work from home for about a year and a half and eventually I had to start working in a communal office space just to keep from utterly devolving into some kind of goblin, and actually welcomed noisy neighbors because it broke up the constant silence of my apartment.

I freelance also and haven't had quite as much problem with the social stuff (at least recently) because I live close to (and get on well with) my family, in addition to a few other minor social outlets that I cultivate just to make sure I don't turn myself into a hermit out of social anxiety. (I did have that problem several years ago and I heartily recommend avoiding it. That poo poo is the worst.)

I found myself really identifying with the second half, about having to be "on" and careful in social situations because of being a big weirdo. Also the part about wanting to spectate. Totally feel that.

Movies with Mikey's Dark Knight review may have been one of the more exhausting videos he's done. Between poo poo like 'you know if you think about it the joker is kinda the good guy in this story because he respects the law in the interrogation room and killed bad people' and a rant about how Ledger's Joker was literally the greatest performance in cinematic history and something we'll be discussing for hundreds of years later (or maybe he just meant The Joker in general, it got muddy when he said 'the joker is a character we'll talk about hundreds of years from now' and then went into 'AND SUICIDE SQUAD'S VERSION OF LUTHOR WAS BAD' as a specific focus), I wound up just closing it before it was over.

Maybe I'm too far into an anti-jerk territory about the 'Nolan is BASICALLY the greatest director ever right guys' poo poo but at this point when someone starts rambling about how Nolan could basically save the entire movie industry by everyone doing what he does my mind just slowly shuts off.

I go to university for a little while longer but I feel this way especially on dates. Being disabled and sorta :spergin: doesn't help but somehow people like me okay I guess. I'm also probably going to work from home once I get a job due to my disability so I have that to look forward to.

I like his reviews but he seems to have a real chip on his shoulder when it comes to the DC films. He pokes at them for those quick cut jokes every once in a while in a review and if he holds those Nolan films to such high esteem I can see why. I still enjoy those films but they're not high art or utter masterpieces. Aside from Begins, they felt too much like crime dramas that happen to have Batman in them. Like almost all of Nolan's films, in my opinion, they lose their luster upon repeated viewings. That's when you start picking up on weird details or plot holes or whatever things he does that takes away from the experience.

Except The Prestige. That movie's a masterpiece and I'll fight anyone who says otherwise!

I have to comment on the Golden One's bookshelves. Because I noticed a thing.

Aside from a ton of fantasy there is also a lot of historical fiction, one specific series I noted was Conn Igguldens series on Caesar. Which are the worst books I have ever read (I got three books in god help me).

It's basically the surface details of Julius Caesar's life except kind of made into a shounen anime? Like Caesar and Brutus are childhood friends and Caesar is like the most ridiculous Mary Sue ever. The whole thing feels like the author didn't know what actually made that history interesting except for 'woah Romans are bad-rear end! And really passionate about nationalism I guess?'. There's a big speech at the start where Julius' dad or his dad's slave grab some soil and are like 'THIS is Rome everything is about Rome etc' and it's a really bad speech that is also somehow meant to be super inspiring and launch Julius Caesar's ambition or something.

The opening of the first book is a young Julius Caesars family fighting off a slave revolt. Talk about a hard sell to make you care about these characters. Add to that the author being wishy washy over whether Caesar was a hard-rear end tyrant or a big old softie.

For example there is a famous story of Caesar being kidnapped by Pirates, demanding his ransom be raised because he's worth more, vowing to crucify his captors after they insulted his poetry, and then did so. In the book the poetry part is removed, and instead he crucifies one of them then gets sad about how cruel it is and orders they stop. But then in the same series he fights against Spartacus without batting an eyelash and we all know how that story ends.

Basically the exact thing I would expect the Golden One to read.

So don't worry, it's not just shelves full of fantasy worlds, its also books that actively re-write real history into an infantile fantasy world!

(Though not to say I think Conn Iggulden is a fascist, just that his version of a historical fiction narrative in Rome kind of embraces the fascist aspect of it without any kind of self-awareness, which makes it feel very unintentional. And the books are just generally bad.)

The commentary on the wolf social behaviors was really cool and quite funny considering how even the original author had updated his theories. Also if you think wolves are cool totally check out the BBC wildlife specials episode about them on netflix. Attenborough points out a wolf family unit that follows parental hierarchy.

Baka-nin

Yes Iggluden's Rome series was very strange. He did have little essay's in the backs of his books acknowledging his artistic liberties, but he seemed to be doing that so he could excuse whatever he wanted to do. Like he would change things for the sake of the story and then go "yep I made that up".

I decided to drop the series after he wrote that Caesars Co-Consul Bibulus was a weird loner and Paedophile who surrounded himself with boy (as in actual children) slaves who he frequently molested. In the back of the book he admits he made it all up and used it as a way to make Caesar's political opponents look bad. And he had Caesar save the slaves personally with a knife. And he's so cool doing it that Bibulus stays at home on his own no slaves or servants or family and cowers for years.

If you have to create paedophile rapists out of a political faction fight to make your protagonist look heroic, you've picked the wrong man to hang your laurels or your really bad at characterisation.
