This is super untrue, I've hailed cabs in many cities while traveling for work.

Everywhere else you go to a taxi stand where they sit and wait or call the company for them to send a driver to pick you up. You can hail cabs in Seattle. Ubers and Lyfts here seem to be 90% off-duty cab drivers anyway. IIRC, there are limits to the amount of hours a cabbie can drive in a day here, so they switch to Uber/Lyft to keep earning after hitting their limit. And as the Crown Vics age out of taxi service and get replaced by Priuses, the cars are all pretty much the same, too. So there's not much difference. The apps are cheaper for some rides if they aren't doing their fare multipliers, but when they are they come out about the same. And they all drive like poo poo and block traffic and can gently caress right off.

It'll cost more than the old taxis and the service will be worse, but the drivers will only make half as much. The long game is when self driving cars become available. No drivers to pay, and civilians aren't be trusted to maintain the fancy self driving systems. You'll paying rent to Uber over $500 a month for all of your transportation needs.

You can legally hail cabs in most cities. Finding a cab to hail outside of a few neighborhoods in a few cities is a rare event though.

Everyone thinks I'm weird when I insist we take cabs in Chicago instead of using Uber and they refuse to read anything I send them that shows what a terrible company they are. It's usually "gently caress cabs man! Gotta support the little guy!" And I'm like "Uber is bigger than any cab company in the country"

The older I get the more I realise how hosed up that was.

DC doesn't have a cap on the number of taxi licenses it issues, which means that there are many more cabs than typical for a city this size. (There are about 7500 cabs, more than half as many as NYC has but with 1/10th the population.) Perhaps owing to this, I would say the average cab ride here is nothing to complain about, and if you're near one of the hubs of the city you won't have any problem hailing one. Ever since they replaced zones with meters and added credit card readers, I'd say DC cabs are not terrible.

So the cab systems already in place were lovely in the first place and that allowed lovely loophole finders like Uber to thrive. Not because cabs are bad in and of themselves

Ever since they replaced zones with meters and added credit card readers, I'd say DC cabs are not terrible. We have the opposite of this. The cab licence cap hasn't risen with population. When they stopped issuing new licenses the value of licenses started climbing due to there being no rules against selling them. Now a license is worth north of 30,000 GBP and suggesting that we create more is political suicide. Because they are so expensive the cabbies have lobbied year on year to raise the fares to make back their ROI and we're now stuck in a feedback loop only limited by how much the government is willing to say gently caress you to the cabbies. Which is less and less as the cabbies get richer and more connected.

Every time I have called for a taxi in Toronto it has been late, regardless of the lead time I give them. I've also had friends throw up in them and we've never had to pay for the cleanup so its a mixed bag. The thing is taxis companies hosed themselves over by waiting until 2014 to get mobile apps. I'm fully aware Uber is trying to push them out and will then charge exorbitant prices for fares when all the legit taxis are gone, kind of like their surge prices right now. but at the end of the day Uber is 1000% more convenient. Try asking to pay with a credit card in any taxi in Toronto.

Try asking to pay with a credit card in any taxi in Toronto. Pretty much all of the taxi companies in Dallas are owned by Yellow Cab or Cowboy Cab. Both are consistently late and take your first born when you pay, and always come up with reasons why you need to pay cash and ignore the meter, or the meter is broken, or they want a carbon copy imprint of your card when they're required by Dallas to either take a card via mobile app and/or via a credit card terminal in the cab. No thanks. Uber and Lyft are a lot easier to deal with.

Not pertaining to a car exactly, but it's car related: the WI DOT decided to shut down two lanes on I-94 East headed into the Zoo Interchange... during rush hour. Because ~reasons~. No really, I checked the website and it wasn't even supposed to be closed.
