I'm completely satisfied with my Fire Hd 8 and I always pick it up before my 2013 N7.

There are just a couple apps that I wanted to use that weren't on the Amazon appstore, so I installed the Google Play Store on it and got those. (this is very easy to do, just install a few APKs)

I installed my TTRSS reader app, Chrome, and Moon+ via the Play Store.

It's an OK tablet made amazingly great by the price.

Probably should have gone for the HD. I picked up a regular kindle fire on black friday and have barely used it since the low res screen bugs me every time I pick it up. I bought it as a beater tablet for my commute but at this rate it will just gather dust in the corner. Lesson learned: don't cheap out on the display.

Is it a carrier version or a WiFi/Unlocked? I believe Samsung pushed Marshmallow like months and months ago to the devices they support, AT&T as usual has just been sitting on the update.

I got my first tablet, a Samsung Tab S2, a week ago. I really like it so far, but every day it has at least one network seizure where it keeps disconnecting and connecting to my router. Restarting the router generally fixes it, but it gets really annoying. Any advice? I use a devolo dLan 500 Wifi adapter, if that helps.

Hey guys I bought an Asus Zenpad 8 (the 2gb version) and wow I must have low standards because I am in love with this $130 tablet.

The screen pops, the 4:3 ratio is kinda neat as gently caress (though I can see why someone might not like it) and I didn't even bother rooting because the whole experience is nice and zippy. Also, it feels light and premium to the touch (for something in this price range anyways). People say it has shoddy battery life but idk, 6-8 hours seems decent for a secondary couch browsing device. Maybe I'm not up to speed on current standards.

Granted it's only been a day but I can tell I'm going to love reading, browsing, and consuming media on this bitch. I didn't get it for gaming, it's probably not good for that (given the price).

A solid tablet, might be the nicest cheap tablet I've ever used.

I feel the exact opposite of my Shield tablet. Last night I went on an uninstall binge, if I leave the tablet alone for too long it becomes lagtastic for like 5-10 minutes after I pick it back up. The battery still holds up, but the performance just sucks. I've tried flashing stock Nvidia provided android, rooting it, and freezing unessentials, but it just doesn't help. It's probably an issue with the storage that just can't be fixed.

DOES NOT RESPECT THE RUN

BUT THEY WILL
Both of my Shield tablets have horrible battery issues. Sitting unused they might kill the battery in 3 day or 3 hours. There's no way to tell which it will be. When actually in use the battery seems perfectly fine and I can watch movies or read for a few hours and it doesn't seem to drain much at all. I'm tempted to fire up my 2012 N7 for reading since it at least uses its battery more consistently.

Really hoping there's a new N7 style tablet coming out soon. The Shield was perfect for me when I got it, the battery has just not aged well at all.

Just got a Pixel C with 64gb SSD and keyboard after my wife showed interest in having one. We are firmly in the android eco system so it was a no brainer after a $150 price drop and getting $200 for our five year old laptop.

Despite being a huge techie I've never owned a tablet before - should be interesting to see how much I use it. Phablets have been much more useful to me - currently have a Pixel XL and my wife has a Nexus 6P.

I have a bootloader locked Pixel C that's enrolled on the Android Beta Programme and has stopped receiving updates on 7.1.1 DP 1 (NPF10C / October security). Has anyone else been updated past this? I can presumably unenroll the device to get 7.1.1 stable but that will wipe it. Anyone have any better ideas? Am I likely to find an OTA to get off of this build somewhere?

FWIW: All the rumors are that the next google tablet is gonna be a 7 inch tablet. No idea if that's what you want, especially if you are looking at a 10" tablet. It's been delayed because apparently it was going to be a Nexus tablet with Huawei and Huawei didn't want to since it really doesn't give them a foothold in the US for sales. No idea if it's still being made by Huawei or if it's gonna be another pixel tablet. If it is a pixel tablet, it'll probably be expensive.

Yeah I don't mind a name change as long as we get another solid device. With a reasonable price. I'd buy the nexus 9 but it seems to have several issues, like screen bleed through.

Judging from their new phones, they killed the nexus brand so they could increase the price to normal gadget levels.

When you were "warned" about your excessive returns, was the email from "cis@amazon.com"? If so, you need to cool it...the next step is they ban you and disappear. You have no recourse and you are fired for life. Everything Amazon stops (including purchased digital content).

I came close to being banned a few years back...and I only returned like 5 items within 3 months. They are ruthless, BTW, so tread lightly.

So I bought a Fire HD 8" for my 5 year old step-son for Christmas. He's been using an old HTC One M7 for playing random games on for the last 2 years or something because I had one lying around that wasn't being used. Anyway, the battery in the phone doesn't last more than an hour now days between the games he plays and such. Then he asked santa for "a new phone" for Christmas because his was "old" - Anyway, I got the play store installed on the tablet so he can sync all his games onto it. 3 Questions, 1. is this thing a piece of poo poo? I haven't used/owned a tablet since the original ipad came out. 2. The little thing I did to install the play store said it would disable the lockscreen ads too, but it doesn't seem to have done that. Is there another way to do it? 3. Should I root it so I can replace the launcher? There doesn't seem to be access to change the launcher and I feel like the FireOS standard launcher is a little overboard for a 5 year old.

1. No, they're actually pretty solid. Not top-end, but definitely decent hardware.
2. I think you actually need to root to disable the ads
3. If you're going to root it and replace the launcher, you might be better served by throwing stock Android on it and getting rid of the locks that FireOS puts in place.

I have the old HD 6 and was able to pay $20 or something to remove ads on Amazon's web site. It seems like a bad idea to me to root a gadget to give to your 5 year old stepson unless you are trying to prepare him for a career in computer janitoring.

It's a surprisingly decent tablet for the $60 I paid for it on black Friday.

You don't need to root it to change the launcher. I have Nova launcher on mine. It doesn't work perfectly, but it works well enough. It's a little funky with widgets and the home button (which to make work needs its own Launcher Hijack hack).

I don't know how to go about disabling the ads. I doubt its possible without root.

A question -- I did the Google Play Family Library thing and was disappointed with how few apps it carried over. On her old tablet (an older ASUS POS), I had added both of our GP accounts so that she'd have access to my full library. Is there any way to jerry-rig the Fire HD8 to allow the same?

The Nexus 10 is not exactly regarded as one of their better efforts. Actually all of the Nexus tablets have had their issues with the exception of the 2013 Nexus 7. The Xoom, the 2012 N7, the N10, and the N9 were all pretty lovely each for their own reasons.
