The large amounts of money and sophistication involved are the reason it's interesting. Different numbers are required to prove user engagement depending on what level your organization is operating at. Culling the bots and non-revenue-generating users has been a thing for a long time. So in the early days of the internet it was page views, and then people got hip to that and it became uniques. Then it became uniques per some time frame and then it eventually was pared down to, "well prove your demo is white millenials with fuckoff disposable income that possess Visa or MasterCards" What level you need to prove engagement at is just a function of which advertisers your organization is targetting. Go re-implement every arbitrary validation rule in your own code just so they can re-run it all again at their end anyway.
