anime was right posted:my argument is i dont think oda is going to do something that complex, storytelling wise. I think the thing is that if he doesn't, then the scenes where Pudding is maintaining kayfabe when nobody but the reader could possibly know become a loose thread. Pudding having a literal evil eye would be an acceptable way to tie up those loose ends though. Countblanc posted:Pudding is evil. You can't trust anyone who thinks pudding is evil. It would be pretty legit if evil, though... her actions totally make sense. This is exactly what a manipulative person who is confident on their side having the upper hand to screw the other guys over would do, to ensure their victory while toying around with their victims and breaking them down mentally. Nitro showing up again fits, too. Her pulling a triple bluff is not impossible, though. Technically it could go either way at this point I guess, that's why Oda is a masterful, unpredictable storyteller. I just don't see why someone would get hang up on it and call it "the lamest twist". It was set up pretty well. Spidder fucked around with this message at 22:49 on Dec 22, 2016 |

I think it says a lot about Oda's writing when he's able to have Pudding come right out and say "Haha, I'm actually on Big Mom's side and the Straw Hats all fell for it!" and yet a lot of us are still doubting that this is her true personality. Like, she really could be double-bluffing in order to set everything up so the Straw Hats take out Big Mom and Sanji goes free. Or she could be playing it totally straight right now and she really was faking her niceness. Or her third eye is messing with her somehow. Or something else, who the gently caress knows? Oh, and what's Reiju's goal in all of this? Is she on Sanji's side, or with the rest of her family, or is she stuck in the middle somewhere and can't decide? We're not going to know for sure until this arc plays out a little more.

Pudding is nanomachines. Been going back and rewatching some of the best bits from the anime, then watched a newly airing episode. They have really lost their touch. I don't even just mean the terrible pacing and endless padding either, watching the original Arlong Park fights and the redone versions the newer ones just feel kinda off and weird for some reason. Sanji's fight in particular is way worse in the remake.

Pudding being really evil would be pretty dumb considering she had an introspective flashback in the rain like two chapters ago about how Lola refused to just follow her mom's order and marry somebody and Big Mom telling Pudding that if she just does what she is told to do she won't have any problems.

Yeah but this could easily be a case of reader deception. She could remember that day fondly or not but she still chooses to be with Big Mom when clearly leaving is an option. That's what never felt right about this (Good Pudding) to me. If Pudding really is this tragic figure, she's also a coward for never leaving. The one thing I will let you guys off the hook with is Nitro. There's got to be some reason we still don't know what it is or why it's there. It could just be a silent familiar for Pudding or it could be related to her personality shift. Big Mom herself goes through extreme mood swings. Either is an option, but at least Pudding isn't the most boring part of this arc anymore.

That's just me though? She knows Sanji has an awful relationship with his family. She doesn't know that Reiju is secretly the nice one. In fact, she doesn't know a lot of things - a whole bunch of what she says this chapter about Big Mom and her plans doesn't really gel with what we know about her, which can easily be explained as a plausible lie cooked up by a relative outsider pretending to know more than she does. I'm prepared to bet that she's a relatively junior agent (though still tough enough to wreck Reiju the super-soldier's poo poo) who had Sanji and Lola trigger her slightly warped conscience and decided to burn it all down, herself included, to save her sweet, naive idiot of a fiancée. The only remaining question is whether Sanji's female lie-detector is still working as well as it used to.

It's kind of awesome how even with this reveal, you still can't be sure what's going on. Pudding could be evil, or faking being evil to play both sides from the middle, or maybe she's really good but the third eye makes her evil. I think the latter is the most likely. When she met the Strawhats, she arranged to meet them on the shore of Whole Cake Island, but she didn't show up. Instead, Brulee was there with a fake Sanji. This means either Pudding told Big Mom herself, or the eye did, or Nitro did. Her story never really added up. She also talked about meeting Sanji before he ever got to Whole Cake Island, didn't she? I didn't really like Pedro before this chapter but he just won me over. He owns.

She's playing up an act and explaining the entire plan to expose Big Mom's assassination attempt before it happens, then lets Reiju escape on purpose so they can gently caress it all up before Big Mom can kill them. It's why she's crying after telling Luffy what she planned. Also keep in mind she's got that creepy goo monster keeping an eye on her so she can't just say it to Reiju, she has to play the bit. The only remaining question is whether Sanji's female lie-detector is still working as well as it used to. These explanations/theories are pretty much where I am right now. What's really keeping me on Not Evil is a) Nitro's presence and b) I like Pudding. Regarding Sanji's female lie-detector: I don't think it matters. If he thinks she's lying, he'd forgive her and try to stop her self-destructive plan. If he thinks she's telling the truth, he'd still forgive her and try to convince her to go through with the marriage and spare his sister. Sanji is the biggest loving mark when it comes to women, but in the best possible way. Wii Spawn Camper posted:I didn't really like Pedro before this chapter but he just won me over. He owns. Same. Lpzie posted:lol at the people in this thread doing mental gymnastics It's pretty funny. What's the point in Oda wasting so many panels characterizing Pudding as sensitive and empathetic through flashbacks and other panels to waste this by dumping her as "just evil"? Hell she was even crying as she was leaving Luffy and Nami. I could see a split personality or some weird nuance with the third eye, but otherwise it doesn't mesh. If this is a double-bluff and she isn't really evil, I have a feeling Pudding and Usopp would work well together. They're both specialise in deception and misdirection. As for my own wild speculation, Pudding was complaining she was getting sick of Big Mom because of how she was being pampered, which got me thinking about her personal motivations. It's possible this is the real Pudding, and she's playing everyone against each other to weaken Big Mom so she can kill her and take over her "kingdom", freeing her and her siblings. Perhaps not outright evil, but incredibly ruthless and manipulative, putting her own agenda above Big Mom and the Strawhats' lives.

Ubiquitus posted:It's pretty funny. Like, even if she's legitimately a brutal psychopath, Sanji's going to try to redeem her somehow, and her nice "act" is going to be part of her learning to not be a huge evil rear end in a top hat. In any case, I don't think anyone's being silly or ridiculous believing things either way. Maybe she was pretending to be good, maybe she's pretending to be bad. Either way she's drat good at pretending. Seems likely she's got a split personality thing going on, either for real (whatever that would imply), or just as something that helps with her act. For all we know her good persona was really an act entirely- from a story perspective it was all to give Sanji a ray of sunshine in the darkness, something captivating and beautiful he can hold on to while the rest of his life is pure misery. It was crushing, having that torn away. That's what all her characterization was for (possibly). Her flashback to Lola was just her remembering Lola. We don't know what she thought about her.
