Without Prohibition America would have been stuck with a few popular mass consumption styles from a handful of breweries. Prohibition is directly responsible for modern microbreweries through a bunch of things like three tier distribution, the scattering of brewing talent away from industry and the popularization of home brewing. Before Prohibition the average American drank nearly 100 gallons of hard liquor a year. I'm not sure but I think the Russian Federation today is worse, and is killing themselves from it.
