It was really weird to have humans as this plucky newcomer species in a place where everyone else is better stablished and more advanced. Suddenly a small faction of humans get more powerful and advanced than the entire combined alliance. Ok.

They should just remake star control 2 with this new Mass Effect engine. It would be infinitely better than anything they can come up with.

It's been a running trope for Humans to be generic, but able excel at everything. Whereas every other species is specialized in something and thus lacking in some other area.

As ridiculous as Cerberus got, humans weren't more powerful and advanced than anyone. Their reaper-pawn buddies were a pain in everyone's rear end, with far more resources than made any sense, but they were a distraction most of the time, not the main event. A few agents in the wrong place at the wrong time to give the Reapers a force multiplier.

And, to Mass Effect 3's credit, humans spent most of the game being stomped by Reapers, while the turians kicked the most rear end. It mostly came up in the codex, but the game still said that the turians were the one species that, at the center of the Reaper fleet, could still put up a fight, while the humans pretty much folded inside a day.

(Still a better showing than the asari, of course.)

4. Reinforced Harbinger's obsession with Shepard and the "maybe humanity is special" question in ME2.
5. Shepard rebuilt partially through Reaper tech... conflict! Themes!

All of these things could have been accomplished in other ways, but that's how they chose to do it.

1 happens with just any time skip, shepard doesn't have to be dead for it.
2-3 could happen with something as simple as shepard being arrested or something and cerberus breaks her out to get her to work for them, and it'd actually give a reason for shepard to be working with cerberus beyond the first 20 minutes of the game. You could even have some cool spycraft stuff going on, and you could have the actual choice of renegade shepard choosing to work with cerberus and paragon taking one of some set of opportunities to leave and work with anyone else or even on his own.
4-5 is the same dumb tired human exceptionalism that had been rammed into the game by having everyone just say "wow humans must be special" or some poo poo over and over instead of just showing us good examples of humans being exceptional. It's one of the things that Star Trek does very well and could have been a good example.

Killing shepard is the worst way to get any of these things done, and you're right that this is just how they chose to do it, but my original premise is that I don't get why that was their choice other than to fulfill a jesus allegory when they could have done so much else.

Man, playing as a Sentinel in ME1 is hard at first, but once you get the ball rolling its great. You still get Throw, which is the best biotic power, as well as Decryption and Electronics, which are great Tech explosions, and they let you unlock everything without needing a specialist in the party. Lets you mix and match whoever you want without losing out on locked containers. And your Sentinel Training gives you a slight bonus with pistols, which are already great.

I haven't tried it with ME3 myself (ME2 version worked great), but someone released a mod that enables full 360 controller support:

And, of course, a steam controller can pretend to be a normal xbox controller.

Adding ME3 as a non-steam game and disabling the Origin in-game overlay should do it, I think.

Thanks for the quick replies.

I just added it in steam, the overlay was already off, and it works perfectly. Now, as a person who buys more games than they play and have a massive backlog: please tell me which DLC's for this game are must-have? I apparently have:

ME3 N7 digital deluxe version (whatever that is)
Reckoning
Retaliation
Earth
Rebellion
Extended Cut
From Ashes

Other than From Ashes all of that is free anyway and other than FA & Extended Cut it's all the Multiplayer expansions.

Leviathan, Omega and Citadel are the 'real' DLC. Honestly I'd recommend them all but Omega is the least 'vital' DLC and you could drop that one if you don't want to spend too much (since the DLC never goes on sale).

Omega isn't vital, and Leviathan is a fair attempt at polishing the turd which is the ending. It probably works a lot better if you play it during the game than as post-game content (Citadel is the reverse; it's thematically meant to be played last).
