I'm stoked for Covenant, but I haven't yet seen Prometheus. From this thread, it seems that I should go into that with the mindset that I'm not getting an origin story, but one more of a setup to an origin. Is that more correct?

Prometheus is a good movie, so just go into it with an open mind instead of trying to figure out what it is before you see it (this is good advice for all movies.) I like the idea of David being the bad guy here, that should be pretty interesting and Fassbender is the type of actor who can pull off being the big bad in a movie with aliens and engineers.

I'd definitely say that Prometheus is an origin story for the Aliens. It's different, but good. The visual aesthetic of the film makes you feel like you're walking around on that foreign planet with the characters, too.

Prometheus actually works really well watched right after rewatching Alien, but ignoring the rest of the series.

Yeah my only real problem with Prometheus was that it took something really cool and weird and turned into a bog standard burly man. Otherwise it's all good.

Your complaint is that it looks like CGI, so yea the fact that it isn't CGI is relevant to the issue(the issue of whether or not its CGI, which you brought up). Now that we're past the whole CGI thing, you're just saying it looks bad, which isn't really helpful at all as far as discussion. I think it looked good. Are we done or is there more to talk about?

Actually it looked perfect. Like a piece of poo poo spilling out of the engineer's stomach. We are also poo poo.

Anyway "it looked like CGI" is generally just a boring "i don't like this" complaint disguised as something specific. Prometheus was good.

A visual effect that looks like CGI is bad whether or not it actually is CGI. It looked like a special effects shot some Alien rip-off called "Space Seed" or "Hidden Cargo" would blow half their budget on. It looked like a background detail from the Star Wars prequels. It looked like poo poo.

The CG that is in Prometheus is awesome and it has a ton of in camera effects too to complement it. Something "still" looking like CG doesn't mean it's a bad effect. Like look John Carpenter's The Thing is probably in my top like ten movies of all time and looks incredible but there's plenty of points where you can tell which ever creature you're seeing is a puppet. There's even a solid couple of seconds where the Thing transforms into a stuntman in a green t-shirt and then back into a Thing eating Windows' face off but there's literally no way in hell I'd ever say its effects look bad just because of brief moments where it doesn't totally 100% sell it to me. That particular shot in Prometheus though holy poo poo it looks great, it never even occurred to me that it could be CG honestly so if it was then that's super impressive, but reading the thread it seems like it was not. The lighting is so good, the angle it pops out at kind of off center, it looks super natural, it's perfect. Like even if a movie had not great special effects overall, I would never in a million years say a movie with Prometheus' chest burster or c-section scenes in it had bad special effects or bad cg or whatever.

Apparently the deacon scene at the end of Prometheus was a mixture of CGI-enhanced puppetry and completely CGI imagery, so it seems that technically you're both right It seems the trilobite scene was handled in the same way as well. They did create a real creature to use that looked impressive, but had to go with CGI for the final movie because of how difficult it was. Apparently it was a huge pain to even do digitally as well, since they went so far as to ensure the digital image wasn't stretching tentacles unrealistically etc. while simultaneously syncing up with real footage of the engineer actor. Here's some unused deacon designs that were sketched by Giger himself: SUNKOS fucked around with this message at 18:26 on Dec 27, 2016 |

Maybe it's just me but I'm still wishing we somehow get an awesome Aliens vs Predator movie like in the side scrolling beat em up game. That poo poo was off the chain awesome especially for the end bosses being unique variations. I'd love to see Gore Verbinski make it. "CGI? No. we commission Lockheed Martin to build an actual space station and raise the aliens ourselves to make it more real."

I dont get why they just didnt adapt the actual comic. Its not like some semi futuristic looking buildings in the desert would be more expensive than a transforming ice pyramid

The level of action in that game is amazing. I loved how they had two different Predators and made them control and work so differently and how one was like a slick hunter kind of guy and the other was a heavy berserker. I also like the overkill of the levels where they're just like "your guns don't overheat here for some reason" and you just ride on an APC at high speed gunning down dozens and dozens of aliens at once. I just wish the game had more music tracks. Tenzarin posted:The trailer for Prometheus didn't show it was gonna be a slow boring movie based on fantasy science. The 'realism' complaint is always weird when it comes to science fiction, since virtually every sci fi movie, including all the classics, fall apart the second you start to think about them. For instance, why is the Terminator, an infiltrator, a giant man with an accent that would be detectable from space? Snowman_McK fucked around with this message at 22:59 on Dec 27, 2016 |
