"Ah," Ratz had said, at last, "the artiste."
I finally tumbled headfirst into this game over the holidays and have fallen deeply in love with it, having purchased it months ago and never having played the previous two. I just got to Novigrad though and while I finally feel like I have a grip on the mechanics I'm wondering about some stuff:

-Is it better to give up my sweet light geae bonus for slightly better armor rating? I just bought the Nilfgaard set and look like an evil badass but its all medium.
-How often does the Jedi mind trick come up? I maxed it out early but the option only happened twice in Velen even when it would've seemingly veene really useful.
-Do the treasure hunts for gear match the recommended level? I want the cat gear but suggested level is 17 and I'm only 12, so I don't wanna kill myself getting it if its unusable for five levels.
-In general I've been trying to help the oppressed and non-humans. Will this bite me in the rear end? I already made the wrong choice trying to save those orphans from the Crones and don't want more blood on my hands!
-Is the sun&moon regen power worth it? The healing shield is already ridiculously OP.
-Is there any reason to use heavy armor, ever?

~* Challenge *~

Mind trick in conversation only saves you from having to either fight or bribe dudes, it's never used for story.

The only difference that armour wight makes is your stamina regeneration. You'll still move just as fast and attack as quickly in heavy/medium as light, you just won't be able to use signs quite as often.

The initial treasure hunts at least match the gear for equip level (and, often, the enemies you'll face to get it). There isn't much incentive to wearing non-Witcher gear because by the time you start really out scaling it with random drops it's basically just fluff.

As for the results of choices - it's really better to experience them but there's fairly often just two bad decisions which are bad for different reasons. Helping the oppressed / non-humans is sometimes the "good" thing to do and sometimes it will result in something bad happening to someone else. You really just have to judge on a case by case basis and see what happens.

For instance, the bloody baron ending where the orphans get eaten is, in my opinion, the lesser of two evils because of the long term implications of the route to the other ending.

I'm pretty sure I encountered in Velen on a road southwest of the lake with the island in the middle. If it happened in White Orchard for another goon, it could be random. I don't know if the locations are the same every time.

So when should I be so dumbass rich that I don't care any more about money? I'm level 24 or so running around in Skellige (I only showed up at level 22 or so, because Velen question marks). I've got about 2 Grand on me at any given time, but I guess I could sell about 50 rune stones.

Sell weapons. That's how I make tons of money all the time. The best place to start is with the merchant just off the main square in Novigrad. He's got quite a coin purse to start with. I usually just unload all my weapons I hoover up from everything once I start approaching my carry capacity. It took a little while to really get rolling as most of the money you're going to get comes solely from relics. Everything else is really a pittance but selling white/blue/yellow weapons keeps you solvent until you start getting more relic weapons (mostly from thieves' caches or bandit treasure chests). I had around 10k by 16, I think.

Oh wait, that happens along the road with all the hanged men, I've seen that. I thought if it was happening in White Orchard it was a continuation of the Nilfgaardian survivor working as a farmhand for the Temerian he rescued from the battle.

Weird question, maybe somebody knows the answer to it: are there any quests in Velen you can do that will make other quests unavailable? I'd like to just wander around finding them, but I'm a weirdo completist. It was very easy to do in White Orchard because the only two are basically "Do that quest with the herbalist before you finish the Griffin one" and "One of the Treasure Hunts leads into another one," but there are a million quests in Valen, and I don't want to spoil myself if I can avoid it besides checking on Gwent stuff (which I already did).

No, you're fine. There's only one point of no-return that invalidates quests, and it's way later in the plot, and there's a giant UI pop-up that says HEY SAVE YOUR GAME, IF YOU KEEP GOING MAYBE SOME QUESTS WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE ANYMORE.

This isn't entirely true. 'Follow the thread' will fail if you don't finish it before Ugly Baby.

Gangs of Novigrad will fail if you don't go with Cleaver, but you're not really missing content, so don't be scared if that pops up.

If you decide you need to level up, just follow the main quest chain (Bloody Baron / Family Matters). It's extremely good and will dump a lot of XP on you.

You can miss quests, though. I know there are a couple in Novigrad that don't appear again if you avoid them the first time. Whenever you see an exclamation point, take it immediately. I ended up letting a guy near the docks die because I wasn't fast enough to offer him an armed escort.

Word of advice, don't go north of Novigrad. You can handle anything south or in the city proper (I wandered around the whole map to read all the notice boards at like level 2) but the northeast of the map was added by DLC and absolutely everything there is level 30+ no exceptions.

E: I wish the runemaster guy wasn't in the high level area. The bonuses he gives you are so tepid that it wouldn't be unfair players of the Complete Edition completed his money sink quest at level 10 and could use his stuff throughout the rest of the game. Same for the extra mutations in B&W, it would have been cool to build mutations and choose between skill points and mutagens throughout the game rather than in the last few hours.

Another time period would also be fun. Something set in The Last Wish or Sword of Destiny time period where Cintra was still a power and you had a ton of petty monarchs would be fun.

I can't resist running toward a nice, shiny exclamation point, but there are two you can miss in White Orchard - one is by killing the griffin before you find the herbalist, in which case, you can never get her quest. Another is that the Temerian Valuables treasure hunt erases one of the other treasure hunts (because it gives you the same rewards, so the second one becomes unnecessary). I actually don't mind any situation where the latter happens, but the former makes me frown.

I guess I'm just going to try not to worry about it too much. I already found one guy by the side of the road being attacked by drowners and untied him, but it didn't seem to be attached to a quest, so that was weird.

I missed a quest in White Orchard (Missing In Action I think it was called?) and became paranoid about progressing the story from then on. I think the only other ones you can miss are missed with the big Point Of No Return warning further along the main quest. Oh and there's one where Yen asks you to meet her on Skellige and if you leave Skellige without doing it then that quest is lost too.

You can run across him elsewhere in Velen and he's got a quest.

I'm going to stay in Velen until I've found like all the question marks and done all of the quests I can do, unless it seems like I'm getting murderized too hard. I sort of like focusing on one area at a time. I'm sure there will be quests that have to send me back to Velen later, but by then, I hope I know it really intimately and am the do-gooder major of war-ravaged wild dog land. I've been doing the main quest a bit mainly because it's been walking me right through the towns I wanted to walk through anyway to hit a few notice boards.

I've also been trying to practice a bit with the crossbow, because I'm finding my usual strategy of "Roll behind people and hit them, parry and riposte if someone is using a shield" is making me soak up some damage when there are a lot of bandits. Plus the only sign I use frequently is Quen and I need some more stuff to put my skill points into :v:

I don't think Dettlaff will ever have anything happen other than what happened to him. I actually thought Detlaff was the weakest part of Blood and Wine - just undercooked throughout. EVERYTHING else was great, though, and Dettlaff didn't take up too much time.

Syanna can absolutely survive. Buy a ribbon.

Thanks for the advice! I really appreciate it. My question, I think, was vague. I've arranged outcomes where one or the other has survived. Just curious if there is a way to arrange both of their survival at the same time
