I recently got a macbook with the 1440p display, but I'm a bit annoyed with how osx implements scaling-- tells programs the that res is the 'looks like' one unless they use a specific api call or something. Chrome does this, so when I'm looking at just images in it (open in new tab) or remoting in to my other computers it scales the viewport accordingly, which is rather annoying. I have setresx and it works well enough (though I need to mess with font sizes and the like) but for some reason there is no 1080p display mode. it goes from a little below qhd down to the top 'native' scale of 1440x900 which means there is a huge gap where the 'sweet spot' for me lies. Does anyone know where osx stores these display mode parameters? I'd just used windows, but my favorite text/latex editor is osx only plus I get better battery life on osx.

So I've started getting some artifacting on my mid-2014 15" rMBP, and wondering whether it's time to take it into the Apple Store to see if there might be something wrong with it: http://imgur.com/a/YABuw

Is feedback on the new rmbp keyboard kind of inconsistent? Just brought one home, and half the time the a key doesn't register even though I'm clearly getting a click out of it, and sometimes I get two a's out of it, almost seems like on key press and on key release. I also can't replicate it on demand, so I'm hesitant to rush to the store with it.

Guess it's time to schedule an appointment to take it in...

It more perfectly fits the 2015 13" model, which is about a single centimeter longer.

Watermelon Daiquiri posted:You're awesome. Now to figure out wtf encoding they are using for that Are they seriously using ascii or something like that? These days most plists in a macOS installation are likely to be in the binary format; Apple created and standardized on this a few years ago because it uses fewer bytes on disk and has far less parse overhead than XML. However, you can change a plist from binary to XML (or vice versa) without the application knowing any better, because the library fully insulates the caller from file I/O and encoding. Look at the "plutil" command if you're interested in converting between formats and some other stuff. If you install the developer tools (Xcode) from the App Store, IIRC you should also get a graphical plist editor.

Yeah, I know its XML-- i meant the actual 'data' like AAACFAAAFRAAAA or whatever. I figured it was encoding binary into some text, which is what i meant by encoding, but I dont know if its utf, ASCII, or something else entirely since it seems to be only using the english alphabet, numbers, and punctuation-- no other letters or any of the system characters

My gen 5 AirPort Extreme somehow lost power during firmware update and bricked. Brought it into the fruit stand and that was the verdict. It had lost power randomly before but I thought the cats loosened the plug. Maybe it was on its way out. Regardless does anyone know of a way I can try to recover it? They claimed it wasn't possible, but I guess it's worth asking. On the bright side I've been trying to decide whether to replace my 2011 15" MbP with the new model or the last one. After playing with both side by side in the store the new touch bar, screen, weight (or lack of), keyboard and touch pad all absolutely do it for me. A gorgeous machine. Definitely going with the new one.

Bob Morales posted:https://comsysto.github.io/Display-Override-PropertyList-File-Parser-and-Generator-with-HiDPI-Support-For-Scaled-Resolutions/ Perfect-- I got it all figured out -- Replace the ints with the appropriate values. If it's a HiDPI res (quartered and scaled) then you add 'AAAABACAAAA==' on the end, replacing the =. That might be for external displays or something, though code:

I use a 99 cent duct taped bubble shipping envelope that was used to ship an Amazon package. It's lasted two years so far and fits perfectly. Seems absolutely ridiculous to spend any amount of money on these things.

I'm a big fan of Timbuk2 and Herschel- for all that they may seem contrived here. Really thick foam, zippered sleeves, hard wearing fabric, and soft cushy liners to protect the finish. I've also sworn by Timbuk2 backpacks, messenger bags, and camera bags for their integrated laptop sleeves since 2007.

I really like how the laptop sleeve is sewn in higher so it never sits on the ground. Before that I used a minimal bag from CargoWorks that was great as long as you didn't need to carry a whole lot of stuff around.

I've never seen a sticker on a laptop that I liked. Well once I saw someone in a coffee shop with an ODB album cover sticker to hide up the apple logo, that came pretty close to being likeable, but not quite.
