It's kind of ironic that "basket of deplorables" ended up galvanizing more opposition than "nasty woman" did

It might have even done more than Romney's 47% thing

My wife's stepdad's family is half military and they all make fun of Trump constantly but like him because they like his sec-def pick

If you are the kind of person who has the exact opposite views w/r/t politicians' war strategies to mine (eg my wife's stepbrother who just got out of the Marine Corps, who said he liked Obama's willingness to drop bombs everywhere but wishes he'd signed off on more ground deployments and missions, which is literally the inverse of my opinions on Obama's military actions), the appointment of James "Mad Dog" Mattis is enough to make up your mind on Trump even if you were mad about the Khans

Anything that comes across as contempt for the public in general or some vague and ill defined but significant subset thereof is going to hurt and probably be co-opted if it's only really bad from the perspective of the person doing the initial labeling (like 47% and basket of deplorables are).

Of all his stupid, loudmouthed idiocy I don't think Trump was ever stupid enough to take a swipe at a huge chunk of the electorate. Or at least I don't remember him doing it.

Don't forget "I'm With Her" and "Stronger Together", both slogans that said nothing and are just the most corporate, focus-grouped, inoffensive slogans one could pick.

It's sad that literally the only thing in the whole campaign she seemed genuine about was the basket of deplorables thing that helped sink her.

I mean, in comparison, "Make America Great Again" and "Political Revolution" are both calls to action.

I kind of liked Stronger Together because it was about the Dems' broad diverse coalition

but AFAICT they only used it during the brief window around the convention when they were pretending to do outreach to the left; as soon as they dropped the pretense it was back to I'm With Her

But there was no call to action there.

A good slogan is meant to engage the person hearing it. "Stronger Together" isn't engaging. It communicates the diversity idea, but it, like her entire idiot campaign, reeks of complacency. It's saying we are already strong together, so why bother doing anything more?

There was a call to action, it was just a weak call to lovely action. "We are stronger when we are together" translates to "if we put aside our petty differences and work with each other we can accomplish anything," which is good in a vacuum, but doesn't account for the rhetorical power-imbalance between people whose opinions lined up with the DNC's opinions (who never felt the need to compromise) and people who disagreed with them (who, the slogan implies, needed to shut up and get in line)

In short, when spoken to the kind of person it was theoretically supposed to reach, it sounded like a reprimand. I only kind of liked it because it meant something, anything at all, unlike "I'm With Her" which just means "the current speaker is declaring their fealty to the DNC's anointed champion"

Even "We Are Stronger Together" is an improvement as it lacks that reprimand-ish quality and sounds like an honest invitation.

it's fairly blatant pandering to idpol and female voters

and even that didn't work out as trump wins white working class women by a landslide despite literally bragging about rape on TV

this is basically Hillary Clinton's entire political career

hiding her entire self behind a carefully focus-grouped, blandly inoffensive persona designed to fill as many appealability checkboxes as possible, but every time the mask slips and lets some real human emotion out it backfires completely

also she was really really really good at saying things that could have the exact opposite meaning when quoted out of context

2 of those were attacks on specific people, and illegal mexican immigrants are not generally members of the electorate. Did you not understand what I meant, or is this being deliberately obtuse?

The "How stupid are the people of Iowa to believe this crap?" line is the only one there that really comes close, and I wouldn't be surprised if it hurt him. Luckily for him Iowa is not a huge chunk of the electorate, and it wasn't a particularly easy sound bite to transmit (and Cruz was poo poo on actually capitalizing on it)

Although the Iowa thing does prove me wrong, he definitely was stupid enough to have done it and got lucky he didn't.
