Axiom Verge, and something like Odallus, are to me shining examples of why those types of indie/retro/pixel games have absolutely no use for a story and their inclusion is only ever to their detriment. Everyone seems to think they have the writing chops to be as clever or charming as the Shovel Knight folks and they fail every time. If a short intro right before the title/menu screen is all that was needed for a NES game then it's all these games should've used as well.

The plot wasn't really that bad or intrusive though? You get like five seconds of dialog every now and then and that's it. The only time I was annoyed by it was when one of those giant robot things "kill" you and force you to backtrack through two rooms.

I like having a reason for doing stuff in games but it doesn't have to be a deep reason. Like in doom, your reason is just "there are demons and they're causing poo poo, go kill em" and that's fine with me. Alternately, the reason is "the demons are doing poo poo and they're bad and evil and also they killed your rabbit, so go kill em"

I do like a good story, but I don't need it. That being said there is a pretty decent story buried in Bloodborne if you want to seek it, but you really do have to seek it and pay attention. It works better that way though because part of that games whole atmosphere is to place you in a hostile world way over your head without giving you much clue what's going on.

The RNG glitch rooms are very distinctive and it's very possible you just never saw one. I think you only get two per playthrough or something, I didn't find one until after I beat it.

You'll just start hearing static in one place and when you walk into a wall it goes into a super glitch area thing.

Generally the way to do suit only is to find a spot where nobody is looking at you, near a pipe or a wall or something, and just climb. Climb like a motherfucker, to wherever the climbing will take you.

Oh it's only the Breach areas that are RNG? That doesn't seem so bad. I found two during my playthrough, and I think I actually passed by a third that I ignored because I thought the screen glitchiness was because of plot reasons (it was close to the end of the game).

Edit: Checking back it's definitely another Breach. I can't seem to find the entrance at all tho.

if you go to the right of the catwalk to the outside party, a bit to the north is a guy who will have an invite if you knock him out. The entrance to the auction is also right next to him pretty much, guarded by two bodyguards

Yes, you can climb around on ledges/pipes on the outside of pretty much any building. The game has a surprising amount of cat burglar prowling to do if that's how you want to infiltrate places. Paris is a good example; in order to get up to the top floor in your suit you can go around to the back of the building near where the helicopter is, climb up a pipe to get to the second floor, sneak your way across the second floor and climb out a window on the opposite side, and then climb another pipe that lands you directly outside of Margolis' office.

edit: Or you could get the invite, but being sneaky is more fun.

This is actually really easy, there is an invitation lying around in one of the bathrooms that you can pick up that will let you waltz right into the auction

I forgot I actually did that completely by accident (and got the Mr. Rieper cheevo in the process) but from there I couldn't get access to a lethal weapon or get access to Dahlia for silent killins

Given the pipe revelation however it's readily apparent I know loving nothing about how to HITMAN

Agent 47 is a lethal weapon.

If you win the auction Dahlia will meet with you in private Whoops, I totally mixed this up with the Helmut Kruger meeting. Some of the challenges are easier with unlocks, so don't feel like you need to do them all right away. For example, there is a starting point that gets unlocked that starts you immediately at the auction, which solves a lot of problems.

But you can smuggle a pistol to the third floor by concealing it in a food crate and then a staff member will take it past security

Paris SASO is pretty easy. Sapienza was hard to figure out and is really tricky with the virus you have to destroy. I did marrakesh without knowing about an easy silent poison kill and that was super stressful. I'm working out Bangkok now, one target is easy but the other I am puzzling out the right series of pipes to use. And I need to find more coins, Marrakesh had like 8 easy coin pick ups but I've found less on Bangkok.

(It's the old "why is there a plot in porn" thing. For some people they need the plot.)

I am one of these people. I can't really play any game that doesn't have at least the semblance of a narrative. Something like Binding of Isaac has just enough structure and plot around it, but with things like Nethack, which, in principle, would be extremely my poo poo, there's just not enough of a narrative hook to drive me through.

Weirdly, if you go far enough away, that all sense of characters are abstracted away, I'm fine with it again. Like I can play Tetris for hours, but there's no sense that there should be a narrative in Tetris, so it gets away with it.

As soon as there are people, I need motivations.

There is something that just inherently irritates me about Axiom Verge's story and I think it largely comes down to the look/feel of the game and what I'd expect from something of that style. There's a bizarre dichotomy when that particular environment and art direction is married to such silliness. Like let's say you took Super Metroid, but gave it Other M quality narration and story beats. Would it still be as great of a game? That's how I feel about AV, and it feels frustrating because I think the base game is good enough to get by without it.

I think most of the control hints are in the clinic where you wake up, not the Hunter's Dream, though I could be wrong. I don't really remember. They never really walk you through the controls, they just tell you what they are.

If you need a list of the controls, though, they are:

R1/R2 - Attack with melee weapon (light/heavy)
L1 - Transform weapon
L2 - Shoot gun
R3 - Lock on/release lock on
Tap O (while locked on) - Quickstep dodge (fast, few recovery frames)
Tap O (not locked on) - Roll dodge
Hold O - Sprint
Square - Use held item
Triangle - Heal with blood vial
D-pad down - Switch held item
D-pad up - Blood bullets (damage yourself for 5 bullets)
D-pad right - Switch melee weapon
D-pad left - Switch gun
Options - Bring up menu, where you equip weapons, armor, and quick-slot items that you use with Square

I will say that the most important thing that the game never tells you is that when you max out on items, it puts it automatically in storage. When you die it will then refill your items from what you have stored. Because of this it is to tot advantage to either grind for or buy a ton of blood vials early on so you can spend a good chunk of the game not worrying about it.

The refill-from-storage is only true of blood vials and bullets, I think. You have to manually grab any Square-button items that you want to refill from your storage. (I could be wrong, it's been a while.)

It gives you a popup that says exactly that (and where the storage chest is) the first time you max out an item and some get sent to storage. There's also a box icon next to the item when you pick it up if it's sent to the storage.

edit: There's also a message in the hunter's dream that says your vials/bullets are automatically refilled iirc, it's next to the one that tells you about the rally mechanic.

I think there's a perception that if someone doesn't like a Souls game/Bloodborne, it's because it's too hard for them. So you either get "git gud," or some well-meaning nerd like me trying to explain that they're really not that hard--the difficulty really does get overstated--you just have to learn their rules. But that ignores that there are other reasons not to like a game other than "I'm dying a lot."

Bloodborne is a stupidly good game and I think I'm being as objective as I can be when I say that, but at the same time, there are games that are probably objectively good that I don't subjectively enjoy (most survival horror games, for example), so naturally there will be good games that I subjectively like that others don't.
