Is there a mod that removes the built in luck/unluck mechanic now? Back when last i played you would miss a shot/hack/whatever if you were doing well for X amount of time and vice versa for the enemy if you were having a hard time.

Those hidden modifiers have never worked against you, but easier difficulties do still give you bonuses to your own rolls if you've missed high-percentage shots or if a lot of your squad is dead.

I assumed that was the tie-in to the next game. I would be surprised if Firaxis added an epilogue as an expansion pack; usually they just add new mechanics or something. Maybe the expansion pack will add an air game so the Long War team can make it miserable to play.

Waited to do the Viper King this go-around, moved all my guys into position, braced myself for the battle. Viper King shows up, first turn my psi-ops procs the execution, boom achievement unlocked fuckers. What's up now.

Well, apparently I left something alive, somewhere, back in the first area. My guys hear movement, but unfortunately nobody can climb back up out of the Viper King area. The gently caress, XCom? That's pretty lovely. I saved with all my guys down there too!

edit: so I actually had an earlier save in that level, right after the first ambush but before I dropped my guys into the Viper King area and the enemy is in the wall... maybe it didn't spawn during the ambush or something. Is there a console command I can do or do I have to reload an even earlier save?

edit2: ok, I just carpet bombed the area that the noise was coming from and killed a neonate viper. I took a few months off after my first play through this summer and I feel like this game has gotten way buggier than it was. The avenger is all jacked up, it won't zoom out properly, the Make Weapons Available button disappears, the Make Utilities Available brings me back to the Avenger screen... not running any mods. Thems the breaks, I guess.

Is there a mod that makes it so you can only do the specific hacking options if you have high enough hacking level and it always works then? Like say, let me pull some numbers out of my rear end here:

Hacker has 69 in hacking skill: Taking control of a MEC has 0% chance to succeed.
Hacker has 70 in hacking skill: Taking control of a MEC has 100% chance to succeed.

I was getting double faceless on every mission for a month, and when it came to the retaliation mission I was afraid I was going to get triple faceless or something.

Just 2 faceless. The second faceless activated as I killed the last enemy on the map (as usual) but I couldn't kill him on my turn. No big deal what's a single faceless going to do anyways? Then I see "Promotion earned" and that seemed really weird because I had no overwatches or reaction fire ready so how am I possibly going to kill the faceless on the alien turn and earn a promotion before my turn starts? Well, he killed my ranger at full health. 14 health. Killed in one turn by a single faceless. Then a soldier panicked and actually hit a shot. That's how I got a promotion at the start of the on the alien turn. :ohdear:

"Cover doesn't matter for the last faceless" but standing on top of a dingy hut with propane tanks underneath and having the faceless melee crit from across a rooftop and then knock the structure you are standing on down and cause double explosions for 20~25 damage. That will kill you. Moral of the story: tediously scan the interior of every tiny hut for single-tile white propane tanks cause they explode -- individually.

Yeah there are mods to increase hacking score every time you hack, or you can be lazy like me and just add a couple 0's in the weapons/soldier stats ini files to increase their hacking score.

Speaking of which the hacking bonuses are weird in their variance. Some are blatantly broken like make everyone go back into concealment/refresh everyone's action points, some are nice like more loot and control enemies. But other like reduce enemy will/increase dodge aren't worth it. Not once did I feel like I needed that to survive an encounter and most of the time my specialist was better off doing anything else.

Had it bookmarked. I'll repost for those without archives:

misguided rage posted:

1) Do the first mission
2) Start excavating the spot directly to the right of your starting lift
3) On your first abduction mission, pick engineers
3.5) If your first mission doesn't pop up with at least 24 days until the report (unlikely, but it happened to me once) you might as well restart
4) Build a workshop in the spot you excavated
5) Hopefully you get a UFO down with at least 21 days left until the report
6) Sell everything, except for weapon fragments. You can hang on to alloys as well, if you don't think you can raise enough cash to put out another satellite
7) Build 3 or 4 satellites, one at a time
8) Do nothing until 15 days left on the report
9) If you're lucky you've had a fourth mission by now; if you haven't, you'll probably need to cancel a satellite (which you ordered one at a time, right?) to afford the uplink. Build it adjacent to the starting uplink
10) On the last day before the report, launch the satellites
11) Fill a swimming pool with your cash. Don't forget that you only have 6 days to build another workshop, and 10 to start satellites, if you want to have anything ready for the end of the second month.

From what I remember this is pretty much optimal for the base game; in EW I found it necessary to divert some resources away from the satellite game and towards mech production, else you quickly get outgunned.

You could also enable the Second Wave option that randomizes abduction rewards, and reload until you get six engineers.

Unless you're playing on Impossible, it's not necessary to launch four satellites in month one. Save yourself the headache.

I've been playing for a few days with a number of mods installed - gotcha, Arnold voices, numeric health display and true concealment. These were all working fine a couple nights ago but suddenly all the mods seem inactive except true concealment. I'm not getting flanking previews and my Arnold voice soldiers are not talking and I have the old yellow square health bars back. So then I go to reload and it says I need to activate the necessary mods. Then I go and unsubscribe and re subscribe to each mod. The game now loads but only true concealment seems to be working. Any ideas?

I'd take Stop Wasting My Time, Numeric Health Display, Evac All, EU Aim Rolls and Collateral Demolition. All but the last two are QoL mods - EU Aim Rolls fixes a rare issue where enemies would 100% crit you out of cover and ColDemo makes a useless skill useful.

I played it on my iPhone 5s. The only big issue gameplay-wise was aiming my heavy's rockets on the z-axis (hard to aim at specific points in the air).

It eats up a lot of battery too but there were no slowdown issues or anything, so pretty good overall.

After struggling to enjoy this game (too fast paced and difficult for me) a combination of Long War mods, slow advent, and Ironman has finally made it feel like a normal (easy) game with normal (easy) progression BUT permadeath to balance it out.

Even playing on Beginner, I was just constantly stuff that completely overwhelmed my squad. I know it makes me a lamer but I enjoy the game more now.

Ironman > high difficulty as far as experiencing the game properly, because the whole point is dice rolls can't be undone, so you play accordingly. Much of the game's mechanics become meaningless if you can just save load out your mistakes. But legend difficulty levels of unforgiving isn't for everyone for sure.

That's what I thought but somebody described how the game paths pods towards a line between your squad and the objective regardless of concealment so that might be it. You're sprinting to the objective, the enemy shuffles towards a similar direction.

It may be a bit of a problem for concealment, but it's a hell of a lot better than checking a million cruise ship closets for aquatoids.

Only a problem if the game has decided you have to kill everything on the map.

Anyway, line of play is indeed a thing, if you manage to get close to the objective whilst in concealment, all pods will be pulled towards the smaller line of play (measured from centre of squad to the objective). The thing about this line of play is the area pods can operate in shrinks as the line of play does, forcing them towards your location.

If you do a great job of sneaking to the objective, all you'll get for your troubles is all the pods beelining for your position for an unwinnable firefight.

Eh, I've never had a save be lost to all time using ironman, I've had one or two crashes which reloaded just fine but otherwise things have been fine.

I do keep backups of ironman saves just in case, but I only use them if there's no other way to recover. Of course, keeping backups of Ironman saves may seem contra the intent, but it's just to remove the option to save load in game, I have no reason to want to cheat ironman, it's just a way to take saveload off the table whilst in game.

If you have willpower it's not like you can't unofficially play ironman anyway.
