I find I often enjoy shows aimed at little girls. They're cute and fluffy, people are generally nice or just misunderstood and waiting for a little kindness so that they can become nice, and I don't have to worry about edgy stuff coming in to mess everything up. It's not what I always want to watch, but as a sometimes thing it's like a warm security blanket.

Not really. You can make something that's good for 10 year olds and just 10 year olds. To make it good for adults too you have to go above and beyond.

Depends on the prefecture but most where early in the morning. Like 7:30 or 8:00 early in the morning. The definition of a before school kids cartoon.

I only have avoided and that is Berserk. After seeing how bad the first movie was I had no strong interest in watching the show but when I started to see clips of what was being aired I started to watch the original series to remind myself on how Berserk should look.

The original show is also ugly and barely animated though, it's just not as bad as 2016.

Only the manga shows how Berserk should look. That poo poo should be in a museum.

It really feels like they were running a threadbare budget in the first place and then decided to save about 2/3rds of it for the Godhand's appearance, because that is a beautifully animated scene in stark contrast to everything else.

Magical Girl Raising Project, everything about it sounded terrible.

I watched all of the way through these three

3. Magical Girl Raising Project
It’s kind of fascinating how MGRP takes everything strong about the magical girl genre and goes so far in the opposite direction. As a shonen/seinen murder party it’s at least notable for being different due to the character designs, but it completely wasted evoking the genre in its title and never rises above a lovely gorefest. It throws characters away like used tissues instead of giving us a chance to meet them, then frantically tries to introduce them after the fact with awkward flashbacks. Its pacing is so random that it doesn’t feel like it’s split into episodes, they’ll spend an entire week with inconsequential dialog that only ever gets across 2chan memes or obvious death flags, then murder people for shock value before the opening credits in the next episode. MGRP has big problems with establishing characters, you can almost never get a feeling for anyone's personality because all dialog is written the same way, and the haphazard pacing makes it difficult to coherently follow anyone's motivations. Seriously, Cranberry’s entire backstory is crammed into one cold open, and it definitely isn’t a style choice. Magical girl anime is very good at strong emotional connections, consistent pacing, and buildup to climactic moments, but MGRP misses all of those completely in favor of a magical girl shooting gallery, a story that swings wildly between wordy snail’s crawl or breakneck gore train, and character deaths that come so suddenly they can’t even be taken seriously. Magical Girl Raising Project’s novel was published months after Madoka aired and it’s obvious what they were going for then, but 2016 is way too late to cash in on the Madoka hype and I honestly don’t know what Lerche was thinking. To be fair to Lerche, a lot of MGRP’s problems were even more apparent in the original novel, and the anime adaptation is a massive improvement in that respect because their fixes were at least better than NOTHING, but on the other hand they chose to smooth out a girl’s backstory by having her get molested so they can go gently caress themselves

2. Mahou Shoujo Naria Girls
Naria Girls would have been embarrassing to put on youtube, it’s an improv comedy with nobody who can actually do improv, animated in the loosest possible sense of the word, and for some reason has a baffling homage to Madoka in the final episode? The other girls die and the main character uses her magical girl power to undo her own existence and retcon the events of the show it’s wild

1. Nurse Witch Komugi-chan R
I’ve never seen an anime with less reason to exist than Komugi R, like MGRP at least wasn’t trying to cash in on nonexistent nostalgia from over a DECADE ago, and Naria Girls was at least trying to do something unique instead of the most bog standard magical girl i’ve ever seen. Komugi R is such a mess that it feels like nobody involved in its creation even tried. There’s evidence that at one point it was a Tatsunoko vanity project in the vein of Flipflappers or Yuri On Ice that would bring back all their in-jokes and old properties, but then got turned into an idol anime for kids to cash in on that fad, then someone set a deadline and they shoved it out the door with minimal effort while trying to bandage over all the fanservice to sell it to children. The comedy from Nurse Witch Komugi doesn’t even work since it was rewritten so many times that it barely resembles the original, as a whole it honestly feels like Komugi R was produced out of spite for whoever’s dumb idea it was to make this in the first place.

Shame, because unlike the other three you talk about, this one actually has a mostly sensible story. It's nowhere near being a classic, but for magical girl animes it was decently enjoyable. If I am to say something bad about it, it's the transformation-destroys-clothes part with the girls ending up nude and embarrassed. That part gets less focus after the initial episodes, but still gets mentioned in passing later on. ("I need to go shopping for cheap clothes since my wardrobe is starting to empty out.") Either way, if you like traditional magical girl anime you should give this one another look, it isn't bad.

Macross Delta is the only show that I watched enough and also disliked enough that I'd feel like mentioning it in this thread. It started strong enough but the entire second half was spent spinning its wheels and basically nothing that is actually interesting about Macross was to be found anywhere. The mecha parts were boring and uninspired and the singing portions just became a point of frustration that never was as fun as those first few episodes promised.

This is me as well (I don't watch many shows per year) and you missed the biggest sin, imo. Macross Delta's worst sin is that not only does the second half spin its wheels the ending doesn't resolve much at all Windermere still wants its war in the end. The entire show only stopped a SUBPLOT.

I've only watched 5 shows this year and 3 of them belong here I feel. I just dropped Izetta and Re:Zero after a couple episodes each so it doesn't feel fair to count them as votes.

Most Avoided Anime

Berserk I couldn't watch an entire episode. It was just that bad. Why couldn't they have just stuck to 2D animation? I mean the original was animated really cheaply and yet it works far better than this version.

having people help you with things beyond your abilities is significantly different than being "carried." the alternative is subaru being a headstrong idiot who thinks his genre-savvy (and maleness) make him a hero for others (and more specifically the female characters), and that just leads to failure and trauma every time.
