Anyone have a recommendation for a 4k Bluray to get to test out a new 4k tv? Looking for an actual good movie and not a bad spiderman or return of the mummy king movie. I really wish there was some classics on this format like Pulp Fiction or Dazed and Confused.

Isn't that par for the course for UHD? I saw The Holiday on Netflix at a friend's house and it seemed significantly more grainy than the HD-DVD (but I did watch that disc years ago so it could just be my memory. and I wouldn't consider grainy a bad thing. it still looked significantly better even though I think his set doesn't support HDR)

Sony is great about making their 4K remasters perfect, so I'd assume it's simply how the film looks. Especially since it's a mid-80s film shot in Panavision with soft focus and a lot of optical effects.

If you're watching an old movie and it doesn't have grain, that means that it's been scrubbed to hell and back by some form of DNR and isn't worth your time or money.

Labyrinth looks great, but it also is an 80s fantasy movie for children... that's what should be the make or break for you. Not loving grain.

What's funny is that noise reducing grain too much actually makes the image look softer and less detailed. When grain is properly resolved, it actually increases the apparent detail. The caps I posted of The Jazz Singer look alright, but in motion, the visible detail is way higher.

It's too bad they tossed the 8K scans of Baraka after down-converting to 1080p for the current Blurays (or so the story goes) so we still have to wait for the ongoing remastering to finish up before that can be the go-to suggestion.

Worse, the Blu-Ray hasn't aged very well. It's kind of harsh and digital looking today. They could have gone back to the scans and make a fresh 4K downscale that looked perfect.

Especially since FotoKem does incredible work with large format scans. They handled the 8K scans of Lawrence of Arabia, It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World, The Sound of Music, and The Master.

There's only one Blu-Ray so far. It's not quite as sharp as later restorations like The Wizard of Oz and Gone with the Wind since it was only done at 2K for the 2003 DVD, but still looks nice. Main issue is that it's just a little light on contrast and compression could be better. It also has only Dolby Digital 1.0 sound instead of DTS-HD.

I doubt it's a priority to re-do unless they prep it for UHD.

Absolutely, it's probably the most accurate home release it'll ever get. It's a really nice steel book too, I'm definitely glad I picked it up.

Aliens is one of the exceptions, as it was shot on an experimental film stock that reacted waaay grainier in darker situations that expected and Cameron spent a great deal of time cleaning it up. In some respect I think the graininess really suits it as it feels so distant, but the remaster job is superb so it's a tie up really.

And yeah, people will probably already know if they like Labyrinth or not, but some might just prefer a DVD or bluray copy of it at a cheaper price (although $17 is a good price for any solid UHD).

Some pretty cool news from Vinegar Syndrome. I'm really glad to hear they've been so successful. They do good work and are a tiny team (I think it's like 4 guys)

quote:

It seems like we say this every year, but every year it's true, 2016 was our best, craziest, and most exciting year yet, and it's all thanks to your continued support.

In 2016, we were able to restore Marc Lawrence's independent horror masterpiece, PIGS!, to its long lost original director's cut, bring landmark and lost hardcore films, like TABOO and Alex deRenzy's documentaries, to Blu-ray and DVD for the first time, as well as resurrect forgotten oddities like Joe Spinell's THE UNDERTAKER. Perhaps most significantly, we brought the films of Rudy Ray Moore to Blu-ray and had the honor of premiering our restoration of DOLEMITE at Hollywood's historic Egyptian Theatre.

In 2017, we're hoping to up our game yet again. As per your requests, we've scheduled over a dozen more horror films for Blu, with at least one horror title being slated for nearly every month.

Also, thanks to the unprecedented success of our Black Friday exclusives, we've decided not only to offer surprise Blu-rays on Black Friday, but also during our Memorial Day weekend sale.

With 2017 merely days away, we're wishing you all a happy new year, and in the new year, we hope you'll join us again for more unexpected, unseen, and unforgettable genre cinema.
