Isn't Dan selling the house? Or is he just moving out and keeping the property. I wonder what will happen to the field the truck currently resides in. As long as that's settled, yeah I'd turn back and spend the winter getting the Civic ready to come back to finish the project in the spring. This will also give you a lot of time to brainstorm a solution to the brake pedal issue.

Unfortunately he never released them, but I bet a goon could figure out how to rip the recordings... and probably figure out how to get new recordings into it.

Nah man. 14 has done an amazing job so far. If there has to be a hiatus then so be it, Dave's health is more important than the internet getting blue balls for 6 months. Hell, maybe that's part of his plan - to just keep edging us.

As much as I want this crazy thing to happen, I'm not going to sit here and tell a human "the highs are above freezing, you can walk an hour each way in that carrying tools." Assuming the truck can stay where it is, it's probably better to winterize it and get back to it when the weather isn't going to try to kill everyone involved. This has been a successful mission by any realistic measure and I feel like trying to run this thing to Florida on its shakedown drive with no brakes is inviting tragedy.Rhyno posted:If the truck doesn't make it to FL does that mean the communists win? I know consolation feels hollow at this point, but this is the best choice. No one can say you broke before the machines did. It's understandable to feel a bit defeated, but at least you won't freeze to death in the cab of a broken down truck 50 miles from the next town. Have a drink, get warm, and focus on coming back in the spring/buying another rust bucket.

The Daytona was a long shot anyway. You've done an incredible job man, and I don't think anyone could have done better. Now there's time to think about the brake issue and all the other poo poo that needs tightening up. It was an impossible mission to begin with.

Looks like Delta, American, and United fly there, so if anyone has miles, that should work. edit: If you can go the other way, amtrak runs through mccook, ne and has tickets for like $200. edit2: Greyhound won't let me book a ticket from Rapid City to SF or SJ. edit3: They will do Rapid city to Oakland for like $250. It has 5 loving transfers though which sounds like a great way to get stuck in some shithole. nm fucked around with this message at 04:16 on Dec 30, 2016 |

You did the best you could and there's nothing to be ashamed of. If anyone thinks hypothermia or non-functional brakes are negligible risks they can feel free to go out and finish the truck, but gently caress that thing for now I say wait till summer and give it another go.

It's been pretty clear to me for the last couple weeks that the truck wasn't going to be moving by the end of the month. It should have been fully drivable a week ago to have the necessary shakedowns and tweaks to be roadworthy by now. Insane flyers are awesome when they work out, but they rarely actually do. The rigid rod of reality reams us all. It's not a fairy tale, it's a 65 year old dump truck. It'll still be there next spring. Come back when you have the time and tools to make it truly road-worthy and deliver it in one piece to Florida. That will be a mission well done. This is merely a hiatus, to regroup for the final push. I'm looking forward to the continuing saga of Dave, Master Mechanic.

I think the important thing is that this all started with what was a borderline suicidal offer to haul rear end to the exact center of loving nowhere and raise a truck from the dead - and now that the corpse has a heartbeat and is breathing, just having problems moving around, Dave's saying "break time. I decided I want to live." Like I said in the other thread, Dave's journey wasn't simply about the truck, it was about him proving to himself that he's worth the effort and can do amazing things. Mission loving accomplished. The truck will wait, go live and pet the holy old poo poo out of your cat.
