Really the funniest thing about these applications has been the process itself. She has also sent her daughter's essays to other professors to look them over, and has grabbed various other IO staff to help as necessary. And we've had several hour long meetings several times a week during working hours to finish the applications and essays. Of course, she's planning to quit her job soon, so I guess it's her last "gently caress you" to the school.
It is face upon face (not in the good way). She's straight-up using her position to do stupid poo poo because she can, rather than if any of this is a better or easier option. Her face is bigger than other people's faces right now, she's facing all over the place. LMAO

I had a short 8km walk. I cut through a park and saw 4-5 late-teen/early-twenties kids (both genders) dressed up in stereotypical Native American headdresses, war paint, fake tomahawks, and what looked like burlap clothes on top of their regular clothes. They were taking selfies and being dumb, but just seeing them there in those outfits and posing for photos really annoyed me for some reason (I don't know why). I was culturally triggered, because only my people can dress up as a subjugated people from our area! Why don't they dress up like Tibetans!? They don't see me running around and taking selfies in ethnic (and exterminated) Taiwan people clothes!

The meetings are seriously soul crushing though. Imagine having a meeting where you have a 10-minute discussion on whether or not to check the box that says the applicant is an international student (she's not, she was born in the US). The process also demonstrates the lack of imagination and knowledge of the university system too. For example: the girl wants to study biology, and is interested in Alzheimer's. In one essay I mentioned a few professors at a university doing Alzheimer's research, but they happened to work in the department of chemistry and biochemistry. So what do they decide to do when they see that: why, change her intended major to chemistry, of course! Because changing her intended major is a far simpler solution than finding different professors for the essay, or acknowledging that she will be able to take chemistry classes as a biology student, etc. I've pretty much given up on arguing over anything anymore.

as someone who has spent years doing this down the road from you in Tianjin, the thing that still surprises me is how much people pay for your help or service, you then give it, and they say "ok thank you" and then do whaatever the hell they want to do that often directly contradicts and ignores what you told them to do. like, I just don't get it, how that works. still can't understand it seven years later

I want to say it's the conflux of the generally lowered birth rates from developed societies and resistance to the general life checkpoint norms seen in east Asia. And then it's taken to the extreme.

its because having a kid in Japan really, really loving sucks on so many levels

Work/life balance is hosed, support for parents is hosed, housing is hosed, education is hosed, even sexual relationships are hosed (though this is not as big a deal as the other stuff, just more funny)

I'm not in China right now so maybe it's different but when I was there I was amazed at how willing most of the population seemed to wholeheartedly take the obvious state propaganda into their hearts as truth and how little they cared to find any outside info.

Also I'm aware that this is the kind of comment that someone who has never lived in China will quote and say "Naw brah it's like that everywhere" and yeah it's like that everywhere but it's off the loving charts in China.

To answer your question specifically I doubt most Chinese are even aware of it because that's the kind of story the state media just doesn't talk about.

Serious answer: all developed countries have the same problem with fertility plunging. Japan just has zero immigration to fill in the gaps.

They are further ahead on a trajectory a lot of other countries are following.

Singapore has an even lower fertility rate (and some cringy ad campaigns trying to raise it), but they also have plenty of foreigners and temporary workers to keep the economy chugging.

They dialed the nerd boys, and the women who will not date them, up to 11.

Their marriage rate dropped, and seriously why wouldn't it. They are still living with 1950 (or earlier) gender norms, except every woman in Japan has a television (or cell phone) depicting what the rest of the first world women have. (If you are an angry American feminist I suggest you never look too closely at Japan as you will probably stroke out.)

Dunno. I've never lived there, just gone to visit family. Probably going again in October. Pretty much everyone speaks English (or something close to it), so it's extremely westerner-friendly.

Food was really good and cheap, beer was bad and really expensive. Insanely hot and humid but that's okay because there is a clean, orderly, air conditioned mall like every block. Outside of malls and shopping, there's not a whole lot else going on. My wife's cousin drove us to see where all the whores hang out (Geylang Lorong 18) cause I guess that's a major tourist attraction. Everyone else excitedly asked if we had visited Singapore's world class Sentosa amusement complex, before admitting that they'd never been there themselves since it's really overpriced.

Everyone seemed to think this movie was pretty spot on as far as conveying what life is like there and criticizing the lovely materialistic aspects of the local culture.

December 30th, 2016: China Edition

I know many Mainlanders are bad with the Gregorian calendar. Many places, people, schools, and parts of the government, still use the old Chinese Lunar calendar for everything. I've met many a Chinese (of all ages) who did not know their birthday in the Gregorian calendar (and had trouble figuring out which year they were born in, since the Lunar calendar adds 1-3 years to your birth date just because). Despite every bit of electronics they use usually having the Gregorian calendar, and many facets of their life using that calendar, many times the dates of things can still be a mystery.

Anyway, the point of this is that there are so many drat people on my Wechat wall saying that today, the 30th, is the last day of 2016, that I felt confused and had to check the calendar to see if maybe my phone had the wrong date. Seriously, I am surprised at how many people are saying "this is the last day of 2016, tomorrow begins a new year."

the imdb trivia has some other good stuff-

To distract curious onlookers when shooting on in the city, director/producer Colin Goh and 1st assistant director Stephen Chin staged a mock fight.

As preparation for their roles as fiancées, Asher Su and Serene Chen conducted a fake SMS and e-mail romance for weeks before the shoot. To Serene's chagrin, Dick gave her the nickname "milky pig".
