Why the gently caress did I glance at the Chinese news before bed? First the absurd http://m.scmp.com/news/china/society/article/2058885/one-killed-seven-hurt-after-public-toilet-explodes-and-collapses quote:One person was killed and seven injured when a build-up of gas in sewer pipes caused a public toilet to explode in northwestern China on New Year’s Eve. Then came the infuriation with Chinese characteristics. Read the part about the bastard grandfather. Christ. http://m.scmp.com/news/china/society/article/2054421/chinese-girl-9-and-toddler-twins-left-homeless-after-parents-and quote:Local Chinese police have stepped in to help find shelter for three young children in eastern China after the children’s parents abandoned them and their relatives all refused to take them in. It's like closing your eyes and yelling "You can't see me!".

Just chiming in to say hunan food is delicious and the buns from the Hubei and Hunan border region are the only buns worth a single goddamn in the whole country. If your food isnt cooked spicy with extra spicy seasoning on top youre just wasting my time. Relatedly, Hunan/Hubei feels like the place where when traveling east to west chinese civilization gave up.

Tonight - My Boss: "I talked to a tiger mom today. I could not believe!!!" Me: "Oh?" Boss: "She said she has her son learning English, French, and Spanish all at the same time, and he is still learning Chinese. He is only five years old!" Me: LMAO Boss: "She also has him taking piano lessons!" Me: LOOOOL Boss: "He is going to hate her later. If a child cannot have a childhood, when can he have a childhood? This is why I don't pressure my daughter like all these parents." Me: Kek Boss: "It's so stupid. They just want money." Me: "There's a stereotype about Asian moms in the US forcing their kids to do all this studying and playing piano and violin and have no time to play. Good to see they learned this technique from the motherland." Boss: "These parents don't like their kids." I want to bang a tiger mom. All the moms I've banged have all loved their kids and I think it doesn't give them that pizzazz that a child-loathing bitch mom might possess. Honestly Tiger Moms also love their kids, but in a way that loves them for their possibly imagined potential than as they currently are. It's a sort of "you'll thank me later" sort of love where it's just as likely the kid really will succeed and be nominally well adjusted as it is that they'll just wash out and rebel but have the fundamentals that were drilled into them still around layer in development to potentially use/abuse

She made no effort to go around him at all, despite having like 5 meters of open space around him. At the last moment he turned and put his hand out and grabbed the front basket on the bike. The bike stopped and he acted like nothing even happened and just kept walking. The ayi had a look on her face like "WAS THAT A LAOWAI? WHY IS HE SO OLD AND STRONG?" Then she started the bike again and kept going. OLD LAOWAI STRENGTH Hm what a name for boner pills.

Video of smog blowing into Beijing https://gfycat.com/UnevenZealousBurro The smog blows in like this in Shenzhen, too. I live about 5km from the bay and I can see the smog blowing from the Northwest (Guangzhou, Dongguan, Zhongshan, etc), or directly south from Hong Kong. I've had many times where I look out from my balcony and it seems "clear" where I am, and then 30 minutes later the brown haze is thick and "foggy", and by the evening my room smells like someone put a hose from a car exhaust through my window. Where I work is on the 12th floor with a good view across the western part of the city. I have very rarely seen the hills 8-10km distance since I arrived here almost 5 months ago.

One of the first casulties of 2017. The artist Alphonso Wong, who did "Old Master Q" has died. To be fair he was 93. I read his stuff all the time when I got the chance. I felt it was pretty universal with it's humour no doubt in the same vein as Bugs Bunny as it was almost completely visual. I will be sure to buy one with the already brown trash paper when I get back. http://hongkong.coconuts.co/2017/01/03/legendary-old-master-q-creator-alphonso-wong-dies-93

Reading about the Great Leap Forward, I hope I see the day when the crimes of the party come to light in China. No wonder that this generation of old people is so hosed up. Anyone with any decency perished. I don't think I've ever read something as apocalytic growing out of utter ignorance, dogmatism, face and repression of facts. It would have been best if Peng Dehuai had the whole of the leadership, including Mao summarily shot at the Lushan meeting and their corpses fed to the pigs. Speaking of pigs quote:Jiang Hua, party secretary of Zhejiang thus asked the county leaders to take steps to "actively shape nature": he suggested cross-breeding sows with bulls to produce heavier piglets. There's a whole load of stuff like that in the early years, loads dams built in areas where specialists warned of the dams silting up and getting purged for voicing facts and the projects ending up being economic catastrophies. Huge irrigation projects that literally turned good farmland into barren and destroyed wasteland within a year. Shitloads of people dying from exposure and being worked to death, all the while the collectivisation is loving up the countryside and we're not even at the point where people start dying in droves. Completely clueless cadres forcing farmers to deep-plow fields with thin top soil and plant unfit crops for that area several times over, vast numbers of houses destroyed and being turned into fertilizer (you read right) without providing new houses. Dikötter has a chapter about the conditions that industrial workers and miners faced, and it literally reads like a scene out of Mordor, but with even more ridiculous neglect and spite.

The best part is, when the Soviets offer to restructure debt pretty generously and offer aid and all, and Mao insists that the payments are made way ahead of schedule and no aid is needed. Why? He used that as a propaganda tool to shift the blame for the famine on the USSR for making completely heartless and inhumane demands when China had a little crisis and it all turned out to be such a catastrophy because of that. It's all their fault, you see?

Personally my favourite aspect of the Great Leap Forward was the drive for iron, whereby peasants were organised into bringing all their pots/pans/other iron utensils to be melted down and used in industrialisation. Except the vast majority of the items were made from low quality pig iron, and were completely useless in any industrial capacity. Not that the party ever told them that! Just let them continue giving up all their useful items for the good of collectivisation. Mao.txt

Mine was how how the insane crop figures kept escalating. Who knows if one province actually had a good year and good local party officials and reported 1000 tons of wheat versus 800 tons the previous year, because once they announced their number suddenly the next province in line started yelling "WE PRODUCED 2000 TONS OF WHEAT" and so on with each place topping the previous reported number and then everyone going back and "adjusting" up their previous statements to try and win the face battle for best province.
