People paying American dollars to let other people know they didn't agree with someone's position on something is the lifeblood of these forums.

Hmm, is the situation in Puerto Rico kind of like the situation in the West Bank? Puerto Rico is a US territory, but the citizens can't vote in national US elections, kind of like how Palestinians can't vote in Israeli elections despite living in occupied territory. Can mainland US citizens buy land in Puerto Rico and set up settlements there?

The big difference is that Puerto Rican citizens consider themselves Americans and are at least nominally considered Americans by people on the mainland. PR-born people outside of PR are treated as any other US citizen would be, and that a mainland American who moves to PR isn't privileged over someone born in PR in any de jure sense. Palestinians do not consider themselves Israeli or rightful subjects of the Israeli government, and they are oppressed based on ethnicity, including restricting their own ability to move and resettle. On the other hand, Puerto Ricans are only (legally) oppressed based on residence, and are no (again, legally) different from any other American citizen if they leave PR. Agitating for PR independence is considered a (admittedly fringe) legitimate political stance and people do run for office on the PIP (independence party) ticket, while Palestinians agitating for Palestinian autonomy are suppressed.

Plus there's the part where the US isn't bulldozing Puerto Rican settlements and arresting or just shooting anyone who resists. The US federal government treats Puerto Rico poorly, but with negligence, not actively destructive malice.

I would say not at all like the West Bank.

Yes U.S. citizens can buy land in Puerto Rico. Puerto Ricans are U.S. Citizens too.

I was curious how a place that everyone loves to go spend money at could be in such economic trouble. It seems the Puerto Rican government has been doing dumb things with money/loans for a couple of decades.

The Great Twist

Civil rights activists arrested protesting Trump's Attorney General pick, Jeff Sessions

Not just Civil Rights Activists. Literally the president of the NAACP.

quote:

Sessions was a U.S. prosecutor in 1986 when he became only the second nominee in 50 years to be denied confirmation as a federal judge. This came after allegations that he made racist remarks, including testimony that he called an African-American prosecutor "boy," an allegation Sessions denied.

Sessions denied he was a racist and said at his hearing that groups such as the NAACP and the American Civil Liberties Union could be considered "un-American."

He also acknowledged calling the Voting Rights Act of 1965 "intrusive legislation."

In fact, PR has been facing record emigration to the US mainland, because rather than being "a place everyone loves to go spend money," they've been in an economic tailspin since they abolished their laws that made them an attractive tax shelter in 2006, without slashing the public services (because the poverty rate on the island is north of 40%).
