Was the ending to eXistenz more shocking for its time? I can't remember when I first watched it, but I didn't get very long into it before realizing there were good odds it'd end with a "Is this another layer of fake reality?" twist, because I had seen it elsewhere a lot.

I didn't like Naked Lunch when I first saw it but on a rewatch it's excellent. Scanners is borderline unwatchable save a couple scenes (the head explosion, the final psychic battle) and I've seen it in the theater.

LesterGroans posted:For some reason I find Steve Jobs really rewatchable. It has its moments, but I think the "three moments" structure kind of stifled the movie, in part because Sorkin's dialogue is so relentless. If you really wanted the movie to be about Jobs' growth as a person on stage, you'd do the MacWorld show where Bill Gates showed up (although I suppose Pirates of Silicon Valley already did that), or even the iPhone launch. The iMac being the concluding piece of the movie just felt anticlimactic. I suppose I should give it another shot, though, it's been a while.

I agree that the iMac launch seems kinda shrug-worthy at the end when iPhone or iPod would have seemed more relevant. The product in the final act isn't that important though because it's more of a wrap-up of the character arcs.

Death By The Blues posted:Its The Fly. The Fly teaches women that their creepy stalker ex-boyfriend is actually a good guy if you give him a second chance, while the seemingly nice man who treats you with respect will turn out to be a hideous monster. Also, deformed people are not deserving of love and compassion. Young Jeff Goldblum is dreamy, though.

The Cable Guy is basically a proto-Punch Drunk Love in that it's a established comedy actor playing a similar character that he usually does but in a more grounded context which really brings out how broken of a person the character is.
