Actually, no. She thought that if she shut down the phone, the phone would actually shut down completely. She didn't realize that it was, in fact, still running at low power so that it could 'helpfully' sound her pill reminder alarm.

The phone is off if you shut it off. The only way to put it into low power mode is to manually enable that option, and it tells you right there "Hey, all this does is stop emails and some visual effects."

No, it really isn't. Or, at least, hers isn't. And neither is mine. I set an alarm for 8:43 (it being 8:41 at the time), then tapped 'power off' and waited for it to completely shut down. It duly turned itself back on at 8:43 to sound the alarm. I don't know if that's an Android thing in general or our phones in particular, but it's definitely a thing that happens.

Androids by default will power themselves on for alarms. You have to go into the alarm settings and manually disable that function.

This isn't an Android thing. It's something individual manufacturers can do, but not every one does it.
