AP is a personell carrier, AG is a 'general' auxiliary fleet support ship. The lack of an x suggests it's a military ship, and looking it up it was indeed a USS. Efb

TheDemon posted:One weird thing about subs in witp is the way submarine doctrine isn't really modeled. Obviously you can simulate deployment strategies to a degree but if you want to use the IJN subs as a merchant-sinking force there's nothing stopping you and their long range boats and excellent torpedoes are very effective in this role. Historically 184 allied merchant ships were sunk, but this pace of attacks would easily exceed that and turn the Pacific into another Atlantic in short order. There was actually a realism setting in the original WITP where you could set Japanese submarine doctrine to Historical or not. Historical meant that they wouldn't attack merchants if there were military targets available.

Not the Oglala! She holds the dubious distinction of being the only ship sunk three times by the attack at Pearl Harbor.

2 January 1943 The dubious distinction of first warship casualty of historical 1943 goes to the British minesweeper Alarm, beached following air attack at Bône.

There are still ships to sink at Akyab. Planes we can actually shoot down! While probably not enough to sink her, taking a cruiser out of action right before an invasion is a good thing. We see the first pointless attack of the year. I'm ordering my own pointless China attack for tomorrow. The jump in ship points checks out for the cruiser. It could be real!

Even if the Adelaide is sunk, how could it possibly have been sunk by a 40cm gun? Is that some kind of wonky code for a Japanese torpedo?

For reference, that's the same 40cm (really 41 cm) gun mounted on Nagato and Mutsu. Would not have thought there would be many coastal batteries with those, all things considered. Three coastal turrets were mounted around the Strait of Tsushima, but Adelaide didn't look like she was anywhere near there.

3 January 1943 Our second warship casualty of 1943 is Ulpio Traiano, a Capitani Romani-class cruiser (or large destroyer, or flotilla leader, or "ocean scout" depending on who you ask) sunk by British human torpedo Chariot No 22 while fitting out at Palermo.

The RAF finally turn up to ruin my fun. Yeah, it looks like they are stepping up their game here. We do manage to bring one down however. Hmm, I need to sort that leader issue. This is looking a lot better in squad kills/losses. Apparently we took a lot more air-to-air losses than reported! I only have a very old archive kill for you I'm afraid.

The Subs are back on track. As New Caledonia is my invasion target, I'm all for the interdiction of supplies. The Liberators return. The RAF are seeing a major spike in activity. Hankow continues to go in our favour. The advance continues. The subs are doing really well – there were three other “torpedo missed” reports as well! Nothing confirmed today though.

The invasion ships have left port, so its time to start softening up the target area – of course, the AI sends out a tiny sweep from the 60 or so planes I order to do so. The Kates continue their reign of terror. This is frustrating. The bombers of course come in unescorted. Sigh. Moving the fighters leaves the airbases undefended. This is more what I had planned. Kates always know how to make me feel better. We do some good damage to the RAF. I wish these guys would break and run. We hit Hankow again. That was a bloody day in the air, but I have to get working on the enemy airfields – I'll let the sweeping planes work for a few days before sending in the bombers again.

Dammit. Someone gave the Americans working torpedoes! The sweeps continue (poorly.) The enemy bombers are not being driven off, so this is costing us on the ground as well. At least I can count on my subs. We lose some planes going after a light cruiser and a cargo ship. We can't even catch a break here. They even go after our shipping. We just can't stomp the Tromp! You order one attack fleet to leave port, and everything kicks off! So many ship losses, and the main forces have not even entered the “Danger Zone” yet!

My personal gut feel is that the game is probably a little too charitable towards four-engined bomber survivaibility/durability, but not by much - Japanese fighters really did not have the firepower to take down B-17s and B-24s reliably.
