Happy to see our boy sliding on up the rankings. If he can win some matches in that spot, I see him moving into the Endo portion of the banzuke next basho.

He is unreal body wise. Dude is hella muscles for a rikishi.

He's going to have trouble though because he's underweight. The second lightest rikishi had 40 pounds on him, it really starts to matter a lot at this level of the banzuke.

I wonder he is pretty lightweight but he showed some pretty good speed and power last time out. I still think he can pull 8 wins on that alone.

I do fear he'll be another Takanoyama if he's unable to bulk up a bit. It'll be fun while he lasts at least

I like to imagine he gets all the cheat codes from Hakuho.

EDIT: if you have twitter, Inside Sport Japan (@InsideSportJP) is tweeting a whole bunch of photos and videos from training in the various heyas. The Sumo Association (@sumokyokai) has a bunch of pics for the yearly practice-in-front-of-the-suits-dooby.

I'm pretty sure that's frequent NHK English commentary guest and former short lived rikishi John Gunning's Twitter.

He's got some good content on his YouTube channel too, though he mostly seems to post football stuff. Sumo: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL_SppwGnKejlFvlF7ptLHMpKGi3DqP7eA

Around this time, it seems that rumors start coming out about injuries and/or wrestlers looking good in training. Rumor is that Harumafuji is having problems with his ankles, and Goeido is having back pain, both still optimistic that they'll be healthy for the tournament.

On the other side, Kakuryu and Hakuho are both reportedly healthy, in shape, dominating wrestlers in practice, and looking good to go.

It'll be tough for Ishiura but I'd like to point out that he has 15 kg on Takanoyama and in his first tournament in makuuchi was 10-5. Takanoyama never did better than 6-9 in his makuuchi tournaments. It's kind of premature to bemoan a slide down the latter, in my opinion.

Edit: My prediction for Ishiura is getting his kk this tournament, going farther up the banzuke, and then getting mk the next tournament. He beat a bunch of vets in November who were no slouches so I imagine he'll do fine until he gets into meat-grinder territory.

Takanoyama was only ever in makuuchi because a bunch of guys got kicked out for fixing, so its not comparable. There is a huge technique gap there.

If Ishiura can gain 15-20 kg he will be in sanyaku constantly. He was in Juryo doldrums for a year, then gained 10kg and got promoted.

Mainoumi might be a better example of a little guy succeeding in Makuuchi, though I think asking Ishiura to aspire to Mainoumi's level of technique might be a bit much. Either way I'm excited to see him fight more.

Yup, that's the usual way. Some new dude gets a huge win first basho and starts the second basho getting paired with higher ranking opponents, who have have seen their tactics from the first basho. You know they are worth paying attention to if they manage to adapt/mix it up pretty fast.

Chiyoshouma's knee tap uwatedashinage was great.

I think everyone is impressed with Shouhouzan regardless. That match is an example of how weird the sumo rules can be. If sumo was an American sport, it would have tricky rules about "downward motion" or whatever to deal with this.

Haramafuji was injured in his Day 5 match, but he'll try to continue. Someone else translated this, I assume its correct:

quote:

Harumafuji injured his right thigh in his match against Okinoumi today.. "The minute I threw him, I felt a rush of pain. We'll wait and see till tomorrow.. I'm feeling discomfort" he said backstage. He was seen limping but assured everyone that he was "OK.". "All rikishi have all kinds of injuries, but I have responsibilities. Sumo is about the fans. Their vocal support and applause are the best medicine there is. It gives me strength!!"
