Humanity could just look at history and realize it is totally irrational to assume we are at the pinnacle of technology. Science without those funding one narrow version or another, automatically accepts all provable technology and readily encourages anyone and everyone to come up with innovations based on new discoveries or modes of transportation for example. 2 weeks ago•

AP posted:I hope you played the tutorial during the brief period it worked, that's the only mission you've ever going to see. I had the fortune to play the tutorial when it worked, and in full honesty, it was the most impressed I ever got with what Star Citizen promised to be. Not that the mission was interesting or anything like that, it was the tech itself (or more accurately the illusion of the tech) that I found most engaging. For those who didn't see it, you started off in some kind of hangar, and a guy escorts you to your ship. You could walk around the hangar freely, and ships around you were doing their own thing. They looked suitably large. When you finally got in your cockpit, it had a sense of scale - it actually sold the illusion that you were still controlling your avatar sitting in the pilot's seat. You could look freely around at other ships etc. They talk you through taking off, and other ships were also going through takeoff/landing, so you had to keep your eyes open. Eventually you rise up a narrow vertical corridor and when you got near the top, the bay doors opened and you could see space beyond. When you finally left and looked around, you realized the hangar bay was one of several placed into the center of an asteroid, in an asteroid belt around a large planet. The visuals of the sun, planet, asteroids, were great, and you really got a sense of scale when you looked at what, at first, seemed like a huge hangar, and realize is was just a pinprick on a pinprick of what the universe could have been. A great first impression, and this was 2 years ago. Then, it all went away, and the PU came out. Each patch disassembled the game piece by piece as they realized they couldn't do anything they said they would. We were introduced to wank pod timeouts, nipple jets, the worst FPS shooter mechanics in the history of PC and non-PC gaming, and client-side vending machines. I realized the tutorial was a completely enclosed, canned experience that they had no idea how to expand into a full game - nothing more than a glorified 3DMark set of visuals that allowed you to move the camera through. CIG has shown the world just how engaging a game demo can be, especially if you don't know how to make a game. Or a plan for a game.

SQ42 is going to redefine "mission" just like it's going to redefine everything you know about games. Mission 1: Wake up commando Mission 2: Look around your space room Mission 3: Hey, what's in that box? Mission 4: Better take that gun out of that box Mission 5: Oh no your space door is jammed, better crouch to scoot under it That's 10% complete right there and at least 5 space cheevs you can unlock. 6 if you can take the gun out of the box without T-posing through the floor.

To give you an idea of how god awful the tutorial was, if you had a joystick it would not work in the tutorial only. The the one place you got taught how to fly was the one place you could not use your HOTAS

History Comes Inside! posted:SQ42 is going to redefine "mission" just like it's going to redefine everything you know about games. The mission list will read like those TOTALLY REAL AND NOT PAID FOR INN transcripts of the weekly reports where you would have 6-7 bullet points stating the exact same thing and in a list of 100+ items you might have 20 unique items all of which were vague and said nothing in the first place. - Some work was done to cameras - Camera work was redone - Polish and optimization for cameras - coding and client side optimization done for cameras - Camera reconfiguration is underway

Original promised mission length is 50 missions at the 5 million dollar stretch goal. 35 from an earlier goal. (https://robertsspaceindustries.com/funding-goals) I figured you would know this.

TheAgent posted:so are you saying that when SQ42 is released, the first time backers will play it will be in its 100% completed release state? not alpha or beta or whatever? No. What I've maintained was that if we were to get an early bonus, we would get a few levels drop as full and polished, but not an entire game for alpha/beta testing. That will be for full release only.

I love the fact that Chris thought if funding had stopped cold at 5 million dollars, he'd be able to release 50 missions of Squadron 42. We're now at more than 28 times that level, and he can't get the engine working, and they're finding they can't use the motion capture, and they've decided on an "engine change" which is either a) completely no big deal you guys it's basically the same engine branch they were already using, or b) totally the right decision to help bring this project to completion and a huge step forward, depending on which side of the argument you fall on while defending your decision to give thousands of dollars to a shambling mound of poo poo masquerading as a game developer.
