I can understand not wanting to build it in the Philippines because their leader is a murder-hungry fascist, but why would you want to deny the people and children of the world the opportunity of experiencing an underwater theme park? I mean that's exactly the kind of thing that should be built under socialism for the good of all humanity

The article does absolutely nothing to indicate whether the theme park will actually damage the environment, as they could by asking for comment from Dr. So-and-so at such-and-such organization, and it'd be helpful if they could state whether or not there's any comparable precedent. They only interviewed the people with vested interests in the theme park and people at environmental protest groups, some of which are known for just being reactionary. None of the results on the first few pages of Google News answer anything like I'm looking for, either.

Bringing in construction crews and spoiled rich tourists. If something can't be monetized it doesn't deserve to live on this planet.

I know you're joking, but the reality of these kinds of things is they had money budgeted for charitable donations anyway, but then someone had the bright idea to let the marketing vultures feed off of it first. So it's more along the lines of: "These starving third world children are a great opportunity to really boost awareness and social media engagement metrics for Heinz(tm) brand ketchup!" Someone out there had this thought, more or less, and didn't immediately throw up on themselves in disgust.

Yeah pretty much. 'Brand awareness is a mimetic virus / fungal parasite that turns Marketing people into its spore producing hosts.
