I eat Jew/jelly/wood ear mushrooms every day. Today I bought 150gms of the stuff and threw it in a soup. I decided to see if there was any nutritional info on it online, since it seems pretty useless and only adds a flavorless crunch to the meal. I try to count my macros and micros while living here so I don't leave China as a seven-headed string bean with anemia and jello muscles. Anyway:quote:Wood ear is a VERY important food for us that should be incorporated into everyone’s diet. It is especially beneficial for blood, as it can nourish, activate, and clean the blood all at once. Wood ear nourishes yin, counteracts high cholesterol, increases body fluids, and adds moisture to the lung. (We are currently in autumn, a season where our throats/lungs get very dry. This is the perfect time to eat lung-moisturizing foods!) Oh, cool. Thanks for the tips, Google Hong Kong. I hope I don't over-dose on lung moisture, because that would be pretty bad!

The streets got torn up real fast.

I forgot how many of her family members (brother, sister, others) have died in the past few years from cancer. Her mom is still alive and lives with her, and that must be some horrible poo poo that every single one of your kids dies from environmentally-induced cancers (that went untreated due to nobody understanding basic cancer fighting procedures) while you're left to die alone. Part of me was so angry at the stupidity, and the other part of me was relieved I don't have to know whether/when she dies from pretending some 20 RMB pills will magically make the tumor inside of her disappear. She was a very nice woman, but drat, this retarded purposely-ignorant culture has killed one more person that probably didn't have to die at this time in her life. My boss loves moxibustion, and she showed me a page in her book that had anecdotal proof that it cures AIDS, and doctors outside China are refusing to accept this Chinese invention. I like how even in pure lies and cheating, they find a way to twist a "Great China versus the Evil World" lesson into it. One more dividing line that allows people to continue to be racist poo poo heads to anyone that looks different than them. I also had this voice chat exchange recently: Me: *Sends a photo of my Indian food meal to a girl* Her: "That looks terrible. My stomach feels bad looking at it. I HATE Western food!" Me: "It's Indian food." Her: "I don't like. I feel it must be very terrible to eat." Me: "It tastes very good. You should try it sometime, eat some new foods." Her: "I only like Chinese food!!! I will eat not eat this!" Me: "If I bring some to you, will you try it?" Her: "I will only eat Chinese food!!!!!"

The Great Autismo! posted:waiting in line isn't really a thing in the mainland. it's crazy though, like when you're traveling you can tell when you are getting ready to get to the mainland, or a group of people form the mainland are nearby. i can't explain it. it's like the aura of the room changes, kind of like when you have the feeling someone is watching you. maybe i have that feeling because a ton of people are indeed staring at me and my family, i don't know, but it's just a different feeling being at a gate with a large group of people from the mainland. Getting back at the Great Leap, I just passed the point where they mentioned how people had to queue for days to get a slip with their number on it so they could get into the actual queue shoes or trivial household articles. Just imagine! And the really fun part is that the stuff was of such abysmal quality that it fell apart within a short time. Back into the queue.

The quoted rate for USD$1,000,000 today for the FEES was 12-18% depending on the risk factors of the person in China and assumed destination was Australia…..” I suspect that this may have an impact on the upper end of the market…..

The only thing I like about the Chinese line cutting is that in Korea they'd fight you about it but at least in Sichuan, when you call them out they back down immediately, turn all apologetic, and go to the back of the line. I've never seen another reaction.

Having traveled now and also met lots of other expats from other countries I don't think Americans even crack the top ten of picky eaters anymore. At least if we define terms the same way. Sure we don't eat a lot of like, intestines and stuff that are normal foods in other places, but as far as willingness to try new things Americans are not even close to the worst.

Also tends to be really terrible for the morale of your army when the dead are the lucky ones and the wounded get roasted alive by their own equipment. The bandoleers are not bad by themselves, but what hosed them up was the Chinese were still using Matchlocks with loose powder, something that had been obsolete for at least 150 years in Europe. Because of the match if they fell over for any reason the power would spill and woosh! It was bad enough even the British complained about all the burning men. Only 30% of the Chinese had fire type weapons like matchlocks, cannons and bombs. Fire arrows if you want to count them. The rest had spears, rusty swords, horses and bows. They were using cannons from the Ming dynasty and most of them had little ability to change aim. The British had percussion rifles which had 3x the maximum range. Standardised sighted cannons on pivots that fired explosives. The first iron steam ship that had water tight bulkheads which could sail up rivers. All used by the best trained and battle hardened force at the time. Depending on how you count it the K:D was something like 289:1 at the top end or 54:1 on the low during the first opium war. It really was spear men verses guns civilisation style, crazy poo poo.

China finally has the power of the ball point pen. The first ball point was invented in 1888, in 1943 when Biro invented a pen that was sold to the RAF. 1945 saw it's commerialisation. 1960 came the space pen. The last third of the article is face saving BS. It might have been better for them to have shut up about this than to claim it as some sort of achievement. http://www.bbc.com/news/business-38566114 quote:It has sent rockets into space, produced millions of the world's smartphones and built high-speed trains. But until now, one bit of manufacturing had perhaps unexpectedly eluded China: the ballpoint pen.

Even if they managed to figure out production of ball-points, who's to say that they'll be able to withhold acceptable quality over time when the usual quality with chineese characteristics creeps into the supply-chain?
