He drove the car with her in it and jammed on the brakes, and mom heard "grinding" then. I had her ride in the car with me driving tonight, and slammed on the brakes. She said it was the same grinding sound. It was the ABS kicking in. They were a little over half worn on the passenger side, about 3/4 worn on the drivers side, rotors look brand new. Both drivers side pads were worn equally, so I think the caliper may be starting to stick. The amount of brake dust was pretty equal on both front wheels, and it's not pulling at all (even when laying into the brakes hard). I'll replace the caliper next time if the wear is still odd. I forgot how tiny the pads were for such a big car. I think the pads on my Saturn are bigger, but she has 4 wheel disc brakes; I have drums in the back. So anyone know what Advance does if you return half of an order that had a big coupon on it? It was a $40 off of $100+ order coupon, which brought the total for 2 rotors + ceramic pads (Carquest Gold) down to $71 with tax. She's taking the rotors back tomorrow. Make sure there's not an early payoff penalty first. If there is, you may want to look into refinancing, and compare the refi cost to the early payoff. Now that your student loans are gone, you may be able to get a lower APR anyway, just give it a month or two to update across your credit files. That was a really awesome thing that your mom did for you.

Even if you dont double pay your mortgage, paying above minimum payment saves you an absolute BOMB in interest your not paying. I think with our $350K/30 year mortgage if we manage to pay an extra $200 a fortnight off it, it saves us about $100K in interest and knock 10 years off the period of the mortgage. $100K in your pocket is worth the extra $400 a month!

Sounds like a decent mortgage to me? My mom bought her house in 2000, had a credit score in the high 700s, a $150k down payment, and still got hit with a 7% APR, with a company she'd dealt with in the past both professionally (working in car dealers) and personally (3 or 4 houses purchased with them). Gotta love housing booms. She got the house paid off several years ago after the mortgage holder went bankrupt and sold all of their mortgages to a subprime lender that she'd had experience with when she worked in car dealers - as soon as she found out who owned it she pulled the money out of her retirement to pay off the house. There was a huge clusterfuck following that thanks to the company losing track of the payoff for several months. My student loans range from 3.4% to 9.99%. The 9.99% is my only private loan (Sallie Mae), the rest is a mix of subsidized and unsubsidized federal loans. I'm sitting at about $18k in loans but the bulk of them are subsidized. randomidiot fucked around with this message at 10:04 on Jan 11, 2017 |

I've so far not bought tires for my truck. I'm probably going to put it off until the spring. My biggest problem right now is determining what kind to buy - truckish, offroad tires or more highway friendly tires. The truck rarely sees highways (though right now it's mostly because of the condition of the tires) but it also rarely sees offroad use - occasional dirt or gravel but thats it. I don't care about road noise or fuel economy. I don't care about treadwear. The tires will dryrot before I have 10,000 miles on them. I do care about price, and performance in really rainy weather. I kind of like the look of the bigger offroad tires though my truck is 2WD so it's pretty much all show Truck is a 2000 Ranger with 15" wheels. Which should I look at?

With the mortgage interest tax deduction and 3.25% APR, you'll see way better returns. Obviously past performance /= future gains etc etc but index funds will put you in a waaaaay better position given a normal steady rise in the market, even if you only realize your mortgage interest of 3.25%/yr. Worst case comedy option things go to poo poo and hyperinflation occurs, and you'll be able to pay your monthly mortgage bill by working for 30 minutes at your $1000/hr job since you're a skilled worker. Mortgages own at low interest rates. Don't pay them off early.

Some of my neighbours will be in trouble with even a five basis point jump in interest. My immediate neighbour is turning over three financed luxury vehicles right now for two drivers with only one working and preparing to retire. Maybe on an odd year in a bull market but long-term you'll see much lower, and fees will dig into that regardless. second freeing up $1500/mo is only after you've taken money you already have and disappeared it. What I'm saying is if an investment performs at 3.25% (your mort interest) you're better off having the money in investments instead of paying off your mort because of the mort interest tax deduction. Since investments are gonna be better, on average, historically, long term, than 3.25% that's even more ammo going towards taking all that $$ and investing it instead of paying off the mort. (this is assuming you put the investments in tax-free vehicles like IRAs and/or 401ks. They have maximums per year but you're able to contribute to last year for another few months so you could max out two years worth like, today.) If you get a financial advisor the absolute biggest thing you need to do to safeguard your money is get him to sign a piece of paper claiming a fiduciary duty to you. It's important that the term "fiduciary duty" be used. There are a LOT of "financial advisor" crooks out there looking for regular folks with windfalls they can fee the poo poo out of.
