I don't understand the Rockets OR the Raptors. How does either of them win so much? I thought I understood basketball. I understand the different reasons why other good teams win. The Warriors have great passers on offense and contest every shot on defense, the Cavs have Lebron and all those shooters and rebounders, the Celtics roll you with depth and perimeter defense, if the Grizzlies can force you to play their old school style, they will beat you, etc. I look at the roster for the Rockets and Raptors and even acknowledging the incredible talents of Harden and Low/rozen I don't see how either works to create a team that good. edit - I read everyone's subsequent posts explaining the Rockets' success and I still don't see it. Which is why I'm not in an NBA front office I guess. predicto fucked around with this message at 22:15 on Jan 11, 2017 |

A video of the Kobe, Shaq, and Rodman era Lakers vs. the Rockets with Pippen, Barkley, and Olajuwon (with Jordan watching courtside next to Jack Nicholson): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-kG7VOPVzq8 More highlights from that game (and they played in the playoffs around this time but I think the Lakers had Glen Rice then): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-TH3CPSD6-Q That's six Hall of Famers on the court at once, with Phil Jackson making seven on the sideline and His Airness watching, just sorta surreal to see so many icons of 90s basketball in one regular game. Also, Rockets through Blazers era Pippen had such smooth handles, loved his game during this time period but do advanced stats prove he was actually bad?

dokmo posted:Also, the question about Houston's surprising season is not about their offense. They were good last year, they are better this season with better parts. The question is how the gently caress they have a league-average defense while starting Ryan Anderson and James Harden, losing Dwight Howard, and playing a midget at center for 20 minutes per game. Jeff Bzdelik is a brilliant man. If Capela returns and continues improving, it'll probably be D'Antoni's best defensive team ever aside from that anomalous Knicks half-year with Tyson Chandler. I guess the rest of the league going small ball increases the advantage of having Ariza/Beverley. Like the Raptors went small the other night, but since they can't shoot as well as the Rockets it was easier to hide Anderson/Harden. Harden is mostly still an inveterate ball watcher, but he actually did a good job on DeRozan and blocked him twice. Hashtag Banterzone posted:With how the Rockets are doing I figured Ryan Anderson would have some amazing stats. Nope Anderson is not doing great by his previous standards, but he's still hitting a very high clip of three pointers and providing important spacing. Jimmy's big year is definitely in large part thanks to Gordon/Anderson knocking down shots instead of Dwight lumbering around in the paint with all the grace and elegance of a loving bridge troll trying to perform open heart surgery e: This actually matches Anderson's best TS% year at .591% chunkles fucked around with this message at 22:52 on Jan 11, 2017 |

I also just now learned that Capela is one of those guys who played soccer and then switched to basketball because of height at age 13. Like many of the previous basketball greats, such as Hakeem Olajuwon and Hasheem Thabeet.

Gordon would start but wouldn't have many playmaking duties because he had trouble keeping possession of the ball when he was the focus of the offense. Still the only guy that could throw good passes to Asik. They were both hitting long 3s like they are for the Rockets, though.

predicto posted:I don't understand the Rockets OR the Raptors. How does either of them win so much? You know how they say there is only 1 ball? What they really mean is there is only 1 possession; each team gets 1 possession per turn. The back and forth of turns is the pace. Since all professional teams are relatively the same, and use their possessions almost equally well; the differentiation is whether one team can outpace the others due to whatever special factor at different parts of the game, since the pace will be the same for the majority of the game. rockets and raptors are known for doing 2 things well, 3s and ft.. the raptors also don't waste turns by TO. 3s artificially increase pace. you still got your 1 possession that turn, but you accomplished almost as much as 2. FT artificially buff your possession, making sure it counts due to ease of fts. that's basically it. doing these 2 things can swing pace, affect decision makings, lead to wins. most people don't think they have a chance, because their are teams that do the 3 things better, and for the raptors, they lack political capital to get fouls in the playoffs, ironically because their messaging is that their star is not good enough.
