This evening, I had the opportunity to speak with President-elect Donald Trump to discuss recent media reports about our briefing last Friday. I expressed my profound dismay at the leaks that have been appearing in the press, and we both agreed that they are extremely corrosive and damaging to our national security.

We also discussed the private security company document, which was widely circulated in recent months among the media, members of Congress and Congressional staff even before the IC became aware of it. I emphasized that this document is not a U.S. Intelligence Community product and that I do not believe the leaks came from within the IC. The IC has not made any judgment that the information in this document is reliable, and we did not rely upon it in any way for our conclusions. However, part of our obligation is to ensure that policymakers are provided with the fullest possible picture of any matters that might affect national security.

President-elect Trump again affirmed his appreciation for all the men and women serving in the Intelligence Community, and I assured him that the IC stands ready to serve his Administration and the American people.

Oh dear, they can't even use "cannot confirm nor deny". :allears:

quote:

Swiss town denies passport to Dutch vegan because she is 'too annoying'

A Dutch vegan who applied for a Swiss passport has had her application rejected because the locals found her too annoying.

Nancy Holten, 42, moved to Switzerland from the Netherlands when she was eight years old and now has children who are Swiss nationals.

However, when she tried to get a Swiss passport for herself, residents of Gipf-Oberfrick in the canton of Aargau rejected her application.

Ms Holten, a vegan and animal rights activist, has campaigned against the use of cowbells in the village and her actions have annoyed the locals.

The resident's committee argued that if she does not accept Swiss traditions and the Swiss way of life, she should not be able to become an official national.

Ms Holten told local media: "The bells, which the cows have to wear when they walk to and from the pasture, are especially heavy.

"The animals carry around five kilograms around their neck. It causes friction and burns to their skin."

She added: "The sound that cow bells make is a hundred decibel. It is comparable with a pneumatic drill. We also would not want such a thing hanging close to our ears?"

Tanja Suter, the president of the local Swiss People's Party, claimed Ms Holten has a "big mouth" and that residents did not want to grant her citizenship "if she annoys us and doesn't respect our traditions".

Responding to the rejection, Ms Holten said: "I think I spoke my mind too often, and I say it out too loud."

Ms Holten, who describes herself as a freelance journalist, model and drama student, has also campaigned against a number of other Swiss traditions like hunting, pig races and the noisy church bells in town.

She was previously rejected for citizenship in 2015 after residents voted to block her initial application.

The case has now been transferred to the Cantonal government in Aargau, which can overrule the decision and can still grant her a Swiss passport despite the objections of the locals.

Local residents in Switzerland often have a say in citizenship applications, which are decided by the cantons and towns where the applicants live rather than federal government.

It is still very difficult to be granted Swiss citizenship and being born in the country does not give the children or even the grandchildren of immigrants the automatic right to be Swiss.

quote:

And the former MI6 agent is not the only source for the claim about Russian kompromat on the president-elect. Back in August, a retired spy told me he had been informed of its existence by "the head of an East European intelligence agency".

Later, I used an intermediary to pass some questions to active duty CIA officers dealing with the case file - they would not speak to me directly. I got a message back that there was "more than one tape", "audio and video", on "more than one date", in "more than one place" - in the Ritz-Carlton in Moscow and also in St Petersburg - and that the material was "of a sexual nature".

quote:

On 15 October, the US secret intelligence court issued a warrant to investigate two Russian banks. This news was given to me by several sources and corroborated by someone I will identify only as a senior member of the US intelligence community. He would never volunteer anything - giving up classified information would be illegal - but he would confirm or deny what I had heard from other sources.

"I'm going to write a story that says…" I would say. "I don't have a problem with that," he would reply, if my information was accurate. He confirmed the sequence of events below.

Last April, the CIA director was shown intelligence that worried him. It was - allegedly - a tape recording of a conversation about money from the Kremlin going into the US presidential campaign.

It was passed to the US by an intelligence agency of one of the Baltic States. The CIA cannot act domestically against American citizens so a joint counter-intelligence taskforce was created.

The taskforce included six agencies or departments of government. Dealing with the domestic, US, side of the inquiry, were the FBI, the Department of the Treasury, and the Department of Justice. For the foreign and intelligence aspects of the investigation, there were another three agencies: the CIA, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence and the National Security Agency, responsible for electronic spying.

Lawyers from the National Security Division in the Department of Justice then drew up an application. They took it to the secret US court that deals with intelligence, the Fisa court, named after the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. They wanted permission to intercept the electronic records from two Russian banks.

Their first application, in June, was rejected outright by the judge. They returned with a more narrowly drawn order in July and were rejected again. Finally, before a new judge, the order was granted, on 15 October, three weeks before election day.

Neither Mr Trump nor his associates are named in the Fisa order, which would only cover foreign citizens or foreign entities - in this case the Russian banks. But ultimately, the investigation is looking for transfers of money from Russia to the United States, each one, if proved, a felony offence.

A lawyer- outside the Department of Justice but familiar with the case - told me that three of Mr Trump's associates were the subject of the inquiry. "But it's clear this is about Trump," he said.

We're in a weird limbo period at the moment. But I think there's a solid chance of Trump getting tossed, but not initially by impeachment from his own party, but by him getting Yanukovyched somewhere down the line as things get nastier and as there are more leaks. It'll be unpredictable and spontaneous and spread to major cities including New York and Washington, D.C. and effectively make it impossible for the Trump admin to function in those places.

I just see the kindling for it coming into place. He's going into the presidency underwater and the opposition can plausibly claim to represent a majority (or at least plurality) opinion. And this Russian business is an enormous liability, since scandals and investigations will sabotage Trump's legislative momentum, while at the same time undermining his image as an American nationalist, which is central to his image. (He's in the pocket of foreign powers, etc.)

But who knows and this just might be chaos wish-fulfillment on my part.

We might see a preview of this on Jan. 20, but I don't think that'll be the "it's happening" moment when it turns into Amerimaidan. That'll be later. Protests on Jan. 20 will happen then fade. But what those protests will do is prime people's minds for the big ones later, and behind the scenes, allow for networking to take place between protest organizers.

My lefty protest-warrior friends are crazy and talk in crazy terms, and they are in different groups that have their own agendas, but talking to them I get the feeling that the groundwork is taking place. Groups talking to each other and organizing with the framework that is just "anti-Trump" -- that's it -- and not thinking in terms of elections but what sounds to me like occupying public spaces.

But again I have no idea.
