Ross, you have my condolences. I really hope they have to play one more season in SD just for the mountain of boos that will cascade.

Aw hunny, these came out GREAT!
Chargers fans had their goodbye in the 2015 season's last home game against Miami. That crowd reminded me of a crowd at the Q when Tomlinson was here and it was a sea of blue. It was great.

This past season was just sad.

So go to an Aztec game. At least they won't be leaving town or extorting us for a decade while threatening to leave. Cheaper and more fun too

Like SDSU players are being extorted for anything. This isn't bama dude, these kids wouldn't be playing anywhere else and the program probably loses a bunch of money. CFB as a whole though, Id agree with you

The next largest media market with no NFL team is Sacramento, actually. They just built a stadium for the Kings, though, so there's zero interest in forking out for an NFL stadium. I always thought that would be the best place for the Raiders go to to, since it's a long but not totally out of the question drive from Oakland to Sactown, and there's also the train, and Sac actually has lots of unused old industrial space along the river too. But I never saw it even suggested anywhere, so welp.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_television_stations_in_North_America_by_media_market

Sacramento is #20. St. Louis is #21, Portland is #25, and San Diego is #28. Half of LA is still bigger than any of these, though.

Green Bay is the team with the smallest media market at #68.

Las Vegas is #40, so clearly moving to the largest possible media market is not the only consideration, but it's definitely something the league cares about.

Has there been any talk at all about a team moving to Canada besides that Buffalo Bills in Toronto flirtation?

Leperflesh
May 17, 2007

This link is better since it shows total audiences:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_United_States_television_markets

LA's audience is 5,476,830 households. San Diego's is 1,065,700. So while you're joking, you're not far off: it's a fivefold increase in media market size, so even if the Chargers only claim 1/4 of it, that's still more TV dollars for the league. Presuming all of that 1/4 is new eyeballs and not eyeballs taken from the Rams.

I think the League is going to consider (or did consider, a year ago when this option was set up) that worst case scenario, the Chargers move to LA wouldn't cost them much in lost media market revenues, and best case it could double or triple their value to the league. And that's a big chunk of what the owners give a poo poo about, since media revenues are shared equally among all the NFL teams.

shyduck posted:

I haven't heard anything but along the same lines, the Buffalo media market is #53 with just 596,710 TV households, so there's at least ten or twenty US cities the Bills could move to and get a bigger audience. Moving to Canada would also make a ton of sense - no weird time zone shenanigans like the London moved, Canadians already watch their own weird variety of american football, and it's not like it's going to get more blizzardy than Buffalo, right?

You could argue that the number of LA eyeballs who were going to watch a game were already watching before the Rams moved. The TV rating drop supports this. If that's the case, then they are actually losing eyeballs in the move.

I root for good football that's enjoyable. My team fulfills that at the moment. When they start to suck, who knows? I'll probably just watch other games and make fun of the Seahawks.
