docbeard posted:Even aside from the 'gently caress you, corporate slave' side of the argument, this is a really dumb time for Democrats to stand in the way of literally anything that lowers health care costs, now that it's becoming increasingly clear (it was always clear to us) that the Republicans really are going to go through with repealing the ACA and replacing it with "gently caress you". The cynical side of me says that they intentionally hosed over their own amendment so they could talk about how they tried to help people afford medicine without actually allowing Trump to reap the benefits of people being able to afford medicine under his administration

That'd be a neat trick, Trump taking credit for Bernie's bill. I think it's more likely that Obama would've vetoed.

I mean really, what incentive is there for congressional Dems to actively improve peoples' lives right now? Peoples' quality of life improving in any way would just enable Donald Trump, so might as well go full accelerationist and let people blame the sitting president for all their problems like they always do

(Far) Right Wing Republicans could get away with striking down legislation they wanted, because they could claim it didn't go far enough. How are Democrats going to say legislation doesn't go far enough, after they spent so much time arguing against Bernie for going too far? Ed: I guess I'm just not convinced that cynical politics will work for Dems because Liberals and Leftists are already incredibly cynical, compared to conservative rubes. As in, US pharmaceutical countries make them, Canada buys in bulk at low cost, and then wholesalers reimport them based on that low cost. So they're created under FDA jurisdiction lol. you are correct for the most part, i'm sure there's some pharma manufacturing in canada for some mysterious reason canada is able to get the drugs much cheaper than a US citizen can but i'm sure it has nothing to do with using the united bargaining power of millions to negotiate a good deal or anything

logikv9 posted:the big issue is that sanders bases his campaigns against the rich, but too many rustbelt / flyover country voters see being rich as something that is inherently good and if there is "income inequality" it's because you aren't trying hard enough at working! also obama!! Knowing many of these sorts of people, it's heavily context dependent. They are concerned about taxing the rich as a whole because by default they think that if they themselves were rich they would be one of the "good ones", and the people that are "wealthy" in their town are! But rural/rustbelt rich is not the sort of rich that is the primary target here, and many of them hate what they see as the rich elite (emphasis "elite", here) even if they don't hate the concept of wealthy people in general. At least among those I know, there was very much an undercurrent of distaste for those like, say, Romney, or for Wall Street Traders or whoever. People where it easy to make the argument that they didn't make their money by "creating" wealth and thus don't deserve it. I think that's an in, for them - focus on the wealthy parasites.
