I did this with a speeding ticket that I got while across the country on an internship. "oh the state is so far away the DMVs probably don't even talk to each other and I never plan on going back to the state, I don't have to pay it." I got a car earlier this week, a Nissan Leaf. Both of my two roommates have cars already, but all of a sudden they both want new ones. Specifically, my least financially responsible roommate is suddenly talking about how Teslas may be expensive but what is money for if not to make him happy, etc etc.

He's planning to put 20% down on a 70k car. He's going to a dealership on Saturday. All because I came home on Tuesday with a newer, shinier car than his (perfectly functional) Subaru.

This isn't a first, either; he also has to have a bigger monitor and better graphics card and larger speakers than either of us, and so forth.

Have Tesla's sticker prices gone down? I have never seen an invoice for one at less than 95k. I guess it must be the options.

The New Car Bug is pretty common. Especially once you see all the new features that you can easily talk yourself into needing (WhatsApp integration into the NAV system, some incremental safety feature, etc.) It takes a level of self control/maturity/cheapness.

I think some people just see money as an infinitely renewable resource which will keep coming forever and why save.

Base P60 starts at $68K. It's the loaded P90Ds that are $100k or close to it.

Teslas are a hilarious joke of a "luxury" car and apparently their body panels don't go together right and their tolerances are way off and instead of a proper center console you get this lovely knock-off chinese cell phone from 2008:

It's 1) a valuable marketing ploy for tax preparers 2) a relatively high fee product for an essentially zero risk loan, they charge you a fee and then intercept your return, collect the balance of the loan, and refund you the remainder of your return if any. The loan fees are completely invisible to the customer.

Edmunds Tesla had its motor replaced under warranty 4 times during their 17 months of ownership, as well as the main battery replaced once: https://www.edmunds.com/tesla/model-s/2013/long-term-road-test/wrap-up.html

Don't forget that a lot of professional reviewers rely on advertising dollars from car manufacturers, who strangely seem to dislike getting negative reviews.

I think someone from an automagazine posted in AI and admitted that they had to be nice to the manufacturers, else the magazine would fold.

Oddly, this means that the most reliable and unbiased reviews came from Top Gear who could afford to piss off people like Vauxhall, and regularly did so.

Also they were shiny and innovative enough at one point that people overlooked the bland (imo) design. Their brand recognition is so high they're even better than your average german luxury car as a status symbol, which also helps.

Plus, in western europe at least, there were quite a few countries giving heavy tax incentives for 100% electric vehicles so that sticker price should be taken with a grain of salt. Especially in smaller countries, they were pretty popular (due to limited range on electric cars). A couple GWM examples include the Netherlands, where it was possible to buy a cool as heck Tesla for 97000 EUR as a business. After various deductions and exemptions (VAT, motor vehicle tax, road tax, no tariffs on fuel due to it being electric, subsidies for clean cars, extra tax deductions for business owners, subsidies for businesses that drive a lot, subsidies on charging stations, etc etc etc) you could recuperate around 50k of that throught various means over the span of your average lease (4 years). You had to have some cash up front but it was pretty insane.

This was around 2012-2013. Starting in 2016 the incentives have been cut way back because they were VERY EXPENSIVE (who would have thought??). Most of these vehicles are starting to come out of their lease periods now which makes for a good way to gauge how much their popularity was dependent the government paying you to drive one. Turns out that they were very much so, over 2016 sales/leases of electric cars have dropped by 66% in the Netherlands, for example. :geert:

Same thing in Belgium (here is 2014 article illustrating a 74k EUR Tesla P85 being a little cheaper in EUR/month over its lifespan as a 37k Mercedes C200) and a lot of other countries I can't be arsed to look up. Not sure how this went in the US but that certainly helped their popularity over here. People'd think that you're doing really well but in reality you could purchase one for the net price of a mid-range family car.

fake edit: those professional reviewers were probably not aware of the long-term issues because they only drove the cars short term. They might've noticed they're a bit plain looking, I don't know. Maybe giant touch screens balance that out for a prospective car buyer. They can also accelerate pretty fast, which is fun :v:

It was ridiculous. For a while, dealerships were just blowing out stock like crazy on 9mpg battleship SUVs as long as they added an alternative fuel tank (usually propane), but didn't actually need to use it.

The Tesla broke Consumer Report's rating system. As in they had to put a disclaimer on there because it scored so well. Consumer Report's doesn't take money from automakers.

They do acknowledge it's build quality is meh for a luxury car and the interior isn't great. But driving performance buried the needle.

Um...it's the best iPhone.

Or at least it's the best 4 inch phone on the market. Battery life is right in the middle for a current iPhone and it has all the same radio frequencies as the iPhone 6s. If you want a smaller phone it's pretty much the only option that's not nerfed all to hell.

It is literally the iPhone 6s inside an iPhone 5s case. Maybe iPhone 5s' didn't work in those areas either because of their metal bodies or antenna locations.

We demand to be taken seriously

My office has a weird hodgepodge of employee offers. We have an modern 401k plan w/ matching that can be managed online, but our direct stock purchase plan is out of the 80s. It directly purchases company stock at no discount and puts it in an account that can only be managed over the phone, Monday-Friday 8am to 5pm. Every two weeks they send a letter with your balance. When I learned this was archaic and switched to Vanguard, I needed to send them multiple faxes to close my account.

We also have education discounts. You can get 5% off at Western Governors University, which looks to be a legitimate accredited school. You can also get 10% off at the less reputable University of Phoenix, Capella, and Kaplan. This was egregious enough I complained to our HR dept about these being scam schools under investigation and it was horrible to nudge employees into an abyss of debt for a worthless degree. They forwarded me a site that appeared to have been made with Geocities affirming that these were in fact, excellent schools.
