Yes.
Not "extreme" power metal but from the rougher side anyways; New Grave Digger album is coming out in a few days. The title song is pretty lame but this one is good.

I know neither band is in top form exactly, but a Morbid Angel/Suffocation tour was just announced and I've never seen either of them. I've never even checked out Steve Tucker era MA but I feel like I should go.

I caught Suffocation back in 2008 on the Carcass tour with Necrophagist and they were a really fun time back then. Most of the band still seems as tight as ever. Some of the live vocalists they've been using when Frank Mullen can't tour sound a little off stylistically -- Ricky Myers is awesome but his style is closer to Mikael Akerfeldt or Rogga Johansson than an old-school NYDM guy like Mullen -- but I'd definitely still catch them if they came around.

Suffocation weren't too bad when I saw them 2 years ago, although they did of course play too much newer material. I don't think I would see them again though, especially not with 50 year old Morbid Angel.

Vadimvon actually supported MA, Dark Funeral, and Grave on tour 4 or 5 years ago and they were absolutely awful. Thankfully he'll just be playing MA tunes and not their original work.

Both times I've seen suffocation they've been excellent. Morbid Angel is probably lovely live now, but I think it'd still be kool to see trey do his thang. I'd go.

Can anyone link me to some well written articles about Theistic satanism and black metal? Idk too much about the ideology of the whole black metal scene, but it seems like contemporary bands are actually religiously satanic, but older bands tended to use so called satanic imagery as a mark of like outsider status and rejection of Christianity. Am I wildly off the mark, or is this a real trend? Link some articles or provide your own insights, please. Religious satanism seems incredibly bizarre to me

I assume the bands claiming to be religiously Satanic are also doing that for image reasons and are actually just atheists.

If I wanted political commentary I'd just go somewhere like Current Affairs and not read some metal blogger's hot takes on political issues disguised as an album review.

It's not even the fact that she's left-leaning, I'm just as annoyed when people on DMU and ANUS go on about SJWs and how Hitler did nothing wrong whenever they talk about some upcoming album.

Hulk Krogan

It's pretty normal for cultural/art writers in any medium to connect what they cover with their other interests or the larger things happening in culture/the world. If you don't like their particular take, or writing style or whatever, there's a whole internet of other people to read instead.

People treating album reviews like consumer reports for black metal is the weirdest thing to me. Especially since 99% of music writers inevitably use the same language anyway. Reading that the latest Goatfucker 666 album features" furious, infernal blast beats" doesn't actually tell me anything about how much I'm going to enjoy it.

ANUS has always been a bit wonky but the past 2 or 3 years has be absolutely terrible. Every time I see someone print "SJW" I cringe. Especially since I know SR Prozac/Brett Stevens has been writing about metal since ANUS was just text files on an FTP site, meaning he's probably over 40 years old.

I miss when he just wrote incomprehensible reviews out of a giant word salad.

Serious question: do you guys actually read many reviews? I don't, so maybe this is just a matter of preference.

I generally just find writers/blogs who frequently post stuff I end up liking and check in with them every so often. When everyone does their year end lists, I don't really care how they ranked albums so much as I enjoy finding out about stuff I missed during the year.

No Clean Singing and Invisible Oranges pretty regularly post stuff that that I dig. The Black Market is very good, as Henchman of Santa already mentioned. There's one dude at Metalsucks who posts good stuff fairly regularly - Emperor Rhombus I think? Sometimes if I'm bored I'll look up people on bandcamp who follow a bunch of the same bands I do and look through their libraries.

Otherwise yeah I mostly get recommendations from this thread and friends.

I don't read reviews at all because reviews about music are always loving stupid. I go through distros/label releases and am on a ton of mailing lists and check those out on bandcamp/youtube/sc whatever. If I like it I buy it.

The most a review has ever done for me was to make me aware of the existence of an album.
