Topher Grace I think had an edit of the Trilogy that reduces Episode 1 to about the last 10 or so minutes. it's a comment I've made before and even recently that nothing really important happens in Episode One and it didn't need to be a full-fledged film to tell the story it told and the story could have easily have started at AotC. What story happens in Episode One that is so important that it HAD to be told in that film and only that film? Something like an Animatrix version of the Episode One storylines probably would have been just as good a direction to take it in, each segment being sort of loosely connected vignettes of each of the action/plot bits going on in the film and you could probably excuse a lot of problems with just the nature of such a project. A standard animated bit of the Federation ship/escape. A dialog-free Naboo wildlife survival segment by Peter Chung A trippy underwater segment of with a focus on Jar Jar as an Orko character who annoys the heroes. etc.

The prequels were supposed to be the origin of Darth Vader (What if a Skywalker chose the dark side??) and the people who were close to him. His journey from an unusually talented and altruistic young boy to a fully grown man who grew weary of the Jedi way of things. A brilliant and unusual man ultimately seduced by the dark side under the tutelage of the future Emperor This was a GOOD idea for a star wars prequel movie imo Every single thing they attempted failed miserably however https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hi5jjXTPtyY whoops

I saw Phantom Menace in the theater as a teenager. It's cringeworthy now but good poo poo when you're 16. When the second one was in theaters, though, I knew I was watching a big screen dog turd.

To be a bit fair about Episode One, though: It seems like that until Star Trek 09 came out, the prequels were about the last thing we had to feature clean, bright, fancy space adventure film. I can't really think or remember too much sort of sterile sci-fi adventure like that from 1995-2009 other than Star Wars and maybe the Trek films.

Back when Episode One came out and the first sort of rumblings of disappointment were getting heard by fans, I remember someone who was relating an article to me about how we couldn't judge the film in 1999-2001 or even 1999-2004 because the rest of the prequel trilogy. In short, because it was part of a larger story, it was unfair to bring criticisms against the film until we'd seen all three because the story of the three are so tied together and we needed to wait. JUST WAIT!

Even at 14, I knew Jar Jar Binks was a loving dumb idea. Though I did "like" the movie initially, because the podrace and lightsaber stuff was exciting to my dumb young brain. That feeling wore off pretty quickly though.

Watto is supposed to be heavily based on Shylock from the Merchant of Venice, the classic swindling scheming jewish stereotype. Also say what you will about Episode 1 and Jar Jar in particular, he has the biggest character arc and Ahmed Best is probably the only actor who put 110% into his performance. It's a shame the guy never worked again in anything noteworthy. Episode 1 also has the best CGI of the prequels because it still had to blend real life with computer animation and was the only one shot on 35mm film. Later we get cartoon Clone-troopers and CGI Yoda for literally no reason. That is the only defense I will ever give on Episode 1.

Yeah during the "who is the protagonist" section of the original giant phantom menace review, I thought the answer was obvious. Jar Jar was the protagonist. He's the Jack Burton who doesn't know he's the sidekick.

Didn't they go back and replace puppet Yoda with CGI Yoda when phantom menace 3d came out? I think I tried to watch episode I recently and noticed they added a bunch of CGI to it that wasn't there in the theatrical cut.

My experience with the prequels was mostly... confusion. I was more baffled by the fact that the plot was so difficult to grasp and I chalked that up to me being a literal babby at the time. So my solution was to watch it over and over again until I figured out kinda what the gently caress Lucas was going for. Then I quit watching it.
