Hah, some real dumbass idiots in this thread don't even know the point of existence is to toil and convert your time and energy into material wealth and prestige that you can then use to, whoops, you're dead from stress, hope your kids enjoy their inheritance.

Material wealth and prestige would be a really nice reward for my toil. All I get is the ability to barely afford a one bedroom apartment. But at least I'm not a teacher.

I think the argument that some people are trying to make with respect to blindly throwing more money at education is something like this: We all know teachers don't get paid enough for having to put up with so many kids while also trying to teach the brats. The problem is how top-heavy schools are, and all those administrators dip their beak in any extra money and the teachers get little of it. Much like the rest of, everything, the little guys get pitted against each other for crumbs while the guys in power eat all the pie. For example, PDF warning, the HISD principals get paid a loving huge grip of cash http://www.houstonisd.org/cms/lib2/...%20Schedule.pdf compared to the teachers http://www.houstonisd.org/cms/lib2/...20Schedules.pdf I will add, that for Houston, those are all comfortable salaries to live on. It's gotten more expensive here with respect to housing, but it's still not as bad as some other places in the country. Also, HISD takes roughly half of what I pay to the Harris county tax assessor each year. I have no children. Fort Bend county has some of the highest school district taxes in Texas, and they're the ones pissing it away on that stupid albatross of a football stadium. I wish there was more say on how the money gets spent when they come begging for more each year. I'd say give it to the troops on the ground instead of to administrators and football stadiums or whatever dumb poo poo they want to piss it away on. But I'm just some rear end in a top hat on the internet.

I don't think anyone is saying teachers get paid too much, just that in most areas their starting salaries are comparable to other college educated fields. A 21 year old in my area with a freshly minted degree can make $41k and finish their career at $80k+ (probably over $100k after 30 years of inflation). Those are good numbers. Maybe not great, maybe not as much as what they could've made working elsewhere - but good for public sector work. There are terrible places like North Carolina and Kansas, but they get lots of attention because they are exceptions to the norm. But yeah, it's off topic and I don't want to see this thread closed so I'll stop talking about it.

The last two posts picked on something that I'd like to mention. So you decided to become a teacher. If you become good at it and want decent pay then work yourself up the ladder so you don't have to teach anymore! You can't really be promoted enough without getting out of the classroom.

Just heard the Sears at the local mall is closing. It sucks cause that mall is actually doing really well. I was sure it was on its way to deadmall status a few years ago when half the food court was empty, a bunch of other stores closed and the toys r us next door moved. A field and stream moved into the toys r us and they put a big spa place up front near the food court. I don't think there's any empty storefronts now and all the food court stalls are filled. It's always busy unless it's really early or just after lunchtime. I hope the Sears closing doesn't affect things too bad cause it's nice to go to a mall where there's actually people and like that commercial, sears always has parking and you can cut through to the mall super easy. That sears got a lot of business from me. In the past few years I bought a washer, a TV, lots of tools, a couple of watches and used the tire center for stuff like when I didn't have time to do oil change or rotations. I always had coupons or got stuff at super sale prices. Never paid full price for anything there. I try not to pay top price for anything, anywhere but I really taped sears for deals. I guess I should salute the SS Sears as we all watch it slip beneath the waves into the briney deep.

A&F was the one where the CEO flat out said he didn't want ugly people in his clothes, but AA also had a reputation for only hiring pretty people. Sale associates were supposed to be brand ambassadors, and so they had to have a certain look which coincidentally was the kind of thin, white, and attractive (at least for the women) that they frequently featured in their ads. I think I also remember them getting some flack for supposedly firing a black woman over her natural hair, but I can't find the story now so grain of salt.

I wonder if they ever do analyses on the cost of bad PR vs. whatever sales they think to gain by customers wanting to gently caress the girl ringing up their poly-blend t-shirts. Probably not.

The TV was a new model that was selling for $3k at the time. Sears had it for $1200. Insanely cheap for that particular TV. I still have it and it holds up to most new models.

Probably not. Hey now. Those were 100% cotton. I'll kind of miss AA. They made some good, quality basics and I actually have quite a few of their shirts from designers who used them as a supplier. I don't know if it was the decision to pursue becoming lifestyle brand that sank it, but if the choice was between weird poo poo that only certain people could or would wear and slightly expensive t-shirts that will hold up for years, they chose poorly.
