I think when it comes to leftist apologia for Russia's behaviour, I think there's two explanations: the first is the simplest, that a lot of leftists have a lot of nostalgia for the Soviet Union, and even though modern Russia has practically nothing to do with socialism, those older Cold War leftists are still probably big Russophiles. The second seems that, for many Western leftists at least, the only sins worth caring about are America's sins, and the sins of any other major actor is seriously downplayed or not acknowledged at all. You'll see this defense used for any dictator that manages to wrap themselves in any sort of pseudo-socialist rhetoric ("Qaddafi gave his citizens universal healthcare, how could he possibly be bad???").

Who are those "leftists who have a lot of nostalgia for the Soviet Union"? Those "older Cold War leftists"? In which countries they live, how old are they and can you show any kind of their media presence?

Edit: My point is there is no nostalgia for the Soviet Union outside of Russia, and those Russians who are nostalgic aren't leftists.

If you're assaulted by a stranger on the street you aren't then forced to go home and live with them or let them gently caress you. You aren't financially dependent on them meaning you can't get away. You don't have the betrayal of implicit trust and love that a marriage entails. You don't have kids with them which he may also abuse or use against you if you try to leave the abusive relationship. There is a markedly different power dynamic between assaulting a random stranger and a dependent, which is why laws in civilized countries reflect this.

Not to mention that assaulting your spouse rarely happens out of nowhere, it's preceded by other forms of abuse and continues indefinitely, especially if the culprit is sure of his impunity. It's not just assaulting someone, it's tormenting and degrading them regularly to make sure they are too scared to do anything you could perceive as undermining your authority.

As I said on the last page, compare to America's 2000 per year and considering America has over twice the population of Russia it comes out to about 15 times the mortality rate in the U.S. which I'm sure is way higher than anywhere else in the west. Its extremely hosed up and for them to be repealing laws that treated it seriously is just evil. Of course it's at the behest of the Orthodox Church because a man must be able to discipline his family as the good lord said.

The funniest thing about all this is that the regime tries to gently caress over the charity that helps infants and spends by the most pessimistic possible estimate 93% of money raised for charitable causes. I know of about two large organizations in the world who can match that, just barely - Red Cross and Doctors Without Borders. Most charities have a hard time clearing 60%.

In actuality, they spend 100% of the raised money and do administration + wages from sponsorship deals, and their boss doesn't even take any wage. And that's the enemy they picked. How delightfully Christian.
