definitely check out all the runs being mentioned so far but i'm gonna be the one guy throwing my hat in for Final Fantasy 1. it's four hours so you're in it for the long haul and the game isn't much of a looker nor requires much technical skill, but it is an extremely chill and pleasant run. the runners have an encyclopedic knowledge of the game and even hold little trivia questions for people to answer through donations and it's all very well paced and is just a super smooth run all around

at least the first half is, i had to go to bed after that, but i heard they keep up that general level of commentary quality throughout the run and i can definitely vouch for how ace that first half was

My Good Runs list for AGDQ 2017:

Hitman: Blood Money - Cute glitches, good commentary.

Pokémon Emerald - Fantastic commentary, entertaining runners.

Tetris with Cardcaptor Sakura: Eternal Heart - It's KevinDDR, so of course it's good as always.

Jazz Jackrabbit - Chill runner, good commentary.

Jumping Flash! 2 - A weird PSX game that was fun to watch.

Fallout: New Vegas - Crazy glitches, as typical with Bethesda games.

Bishi Bashi Special - Very bizarre game with an entertaining runner.

Crowtel - Adorable game, quick run.

Awful Games block - Terrible games, and all of them were fun.

Turok: Dinosaur Hunter - I was surprised, but this is a really entertaining run with a very passionate runner.

Left 4 Dead 1 - Lots of neat tricks and a cool duo.

Bleed - Run by our very own Studio, and actually had the developer live, on the couch.

SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom - Surprisingly entertaining run with great commentary.

TASBot block - of course.

Undertale - Probably my favorite run of the marathon. Incredible crowd participation, really, really charismatic runner who made the last run really magical.

and I've definitely seen some stinkers in previous events, the Binding of Isaac run and some of the Halo runs come to mind immediately

i really enjoyed this one because i knew nothing about the tetris community and so i learned that:

a) kevinddr is a tetris god and

b) kevinddr did not win this race

those two facts alone made me look up other tetris runs and they are super legit and cool. you all should watch this one:

also please, please add all the recommended runs to the OP or some kind of master AGDQ/SGDQ list so i can watch all the cool poo poo i missed.

dark souls 3 is the closest i can think of to a stinker run and that was entirely because of bad luck and the runner took it like a champ. hard to cheer against a guy when he's trying his best and the pc just shits its pants.

It seems like they ran a pretty tight ship drama-wise this year. There was a bit of commotion with the MAGA hats, but that seemed to get solved pretty quickly. There was that chair thing that turned out to be a guy picking up a can or something, but other than that there really wasn't much of note. Then the Metroid race had to happen. The run was already pretty shaky with the pretty boring, though technically competent, commentary, but when that guy told the wah guys to kill themselves you could just feel every drop of energy vanish from the room and it never really recovered. That and the rather strict quiet time rules killed all the hype for the animals. This is probably the first time I've been really disappointed with the Metroid race.

Thank God for the Undertale run and hitting the 2 million and 10 million total marks completely salvaging the mood.

I love the fact that there was a community effort to fund Suzuribaco and zzzhonki coming to a GDQ. From what I saw they performed really well, I'd love to know what they thought about their time on the event, if they have a Twitter or if anyone can translate it.

It's great that the japanese and western speedrunning community is brought a bit closer. Another example was the english restream of RTA Japan. I wonder if they have a similar thing going for GDQ's?

From watching it the mood definitely picked back up later in the run when the announcer read another Waluigi donation. Also helped that the guy was escorted out of the room. But yeah, the ending of the Super Metroid and the amazing rate of donations helped pick things back up. Also the Hug The Goat chant is the best GDQ chant to ever happen.

EDIT: Oh wow they are fast on uploading the unedited runs this year. The Super Metroid race is already up.

Everyone was kind of zoning out during Wind Waker but I was impressed by that as well. Like he nailed so many tough moves and he explained everything he was doing pretty drat well. It's just those longer runs it's harder to keep attention. Emerald kind of suffered from the same thing from what I saw, but they had much worse luck so it felt way worse. And the guy running Arkham City was outright getting sick so even though he could still do the run and didn't gently caress it up too bad it felt worse. I didn't watch most of Paper Mario but I expect it's the same length issue.

Zelda was definitely a great loving run. Don't let the apparent drama scare you off, it's a lot less awful than people make it sound like, just a guy accidentally calling one of the tricks the Cosmo Hop then correcting himself and I think there might have been a pretty tame triggered joke that wasn't really a dig at any specific group or anything. The commentary in general was actually pretty great. It was entertaining and did a good job of explaining the tricks, which the runner absolutely nailed most of the time. He also went for a lot of small tricks that weren't really necessary in a marathon run, but looked cool, which is always nice.

Especially mindblowing when you consider that there was no humble bundle this year (same with 2016 which likely is why it underperformed). I know there were some prizes with a high minimum donation that helped a lot, but still.

The huge prizes definitely helped. When the big anime bundle was first announced there was an absolutely insane amount of donations coming in for it, and that was a $125 minimum. Just a constant stream of +$125 appearing on the donation total.

And then, a few hours later, when they showed off that same bundle again, same thing happened.

The Undertale runner was right. Anime is real. And it makes money.

This was such a solid year. So many good and entertaining runs.

Some stuff I liked not already mentioned:

The whole Contra block (and the immediately preceeding Metal Slug 3, which is basically Contra by another mother). The games are just demolished by plain skill, and there's the wild ralley to get the Contra 3 run in--which I not only contributed to, but got my donation read on air just before Super C starts!

The Turing Test--this game is very much in the vein of Portal, and the runner is chill while being very informative and sometimes funny. Also one of the funnier "bad" moments happen at the end. There was a bidding war on whether he play the good or bad endings. With that part coming up he asks the crew which won, and is met with complete radio silence. Eventually one of the couch crew pulls out his phone and looks it up for him

Finally, I enjoyed the fast paced banter of the players during the Ratchet and Clank race. The two guys are obvious friends irl and spent the whole time goofing with each other. They afterwards had a pretty good interview too.

WE ARE SMART
The choice between anime is/isn't real only affects a little bit of text that gets skipped by so fast in a speedrun that you can't even read it. The other bid wars for Undertale (file name, which appears a lot in the final Pacifist boss, comfort/shun, and the kill/spare sans they added later) all have effects that are a lot easier to see in a speedrun.

No-one's recommended Descent II in a bit, so I will. He just charges through everything like it's not even remotely a problem, while he's moving at an angle (not even looking where he's going) around maze rooms - the few things that do go wrong are the game's fault and he dealt with it no problem, so overall it was a really smooth run too. He also probably had some of the best informative commentary of the whole event, explained everything he was doing really clearly, despite not having any couch help. I'm always really impressed when a runner can do good commentary and play at the same time and not have either affect the other.

- Ocarina of Time 3D - crazy glitches, very good commentary
- Shovel Knight - really tight race, also great commentary
- Mega Man - same here, very good race
- Hitman : Blood money - good couch, fun glitches
- Kalimba - crazy skill involved, runner playing co-op by himself, effectively controlling 4 characters at the same time
- New Super Hook Girl - lots of skill, fast pace, short game

- Salt & Sanctuary - at least catch the Any Unicorn% which takes just a few minutes, it's hilarious
- Blaster Master - great race with a surprise, all-star couch commentary
- Ninja Gaiden 1 & 3 Pacifist - Even harder than the real thing
- Jazz Jackrabbit - It had good commentary, great nostalgic feel
- Road Trip Adventure - this game is broken and funny, great runner
- Super Metroid Rotation - for obvious reasons

- Super Mario Bros. block - great races, great BigJon
- Final Fantasy: it's 4 hours, don't let it scare you. Feasel, Gyre and Puwexil. Great commentary, really tense moments. Put it on and let those guys' knowledge fill you up.
- Kabuki Quantum Fighter - inspirational stories and awesome speedrunning
- Castlevania : Rondo of Blood - Dracula is defeated by anime
- The entirety of the Awful Block (starts from Batman Forever)
- Bleed - Studio running and has the dev on the couch
- Snailiad - It's Metroid with snails.
- Woolfe: Red Hood diaries: nice little run with great execution
- Duck Tales - literally the closest race I've ever seen
- Metal Slug 3 - c'mon, it's Metal Slug! And the runner makes it look easy.
- SMB Lost Levels 2players 1 controller with BigJon & AndrewG - top contender for best run of AGDQ 2017
- TASbot block

(might update later when I see more)

This is a great list but I must also throw in for Vice City (excellent commentary on top of an excellent run) and DOOM (funny tricks, it's DOOM). Pac-Man World and Crash Bandicoot 2 were really solidly executed runs too. And Turok was great as well because of the runner :3:

So I just looked this up, and the Prevent Cancer Foundation only had revenue totaling around $6 million in their 2015 annual year. We just gave them around a third of that in a week.

http://preventcancer.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/Financial-Statement-June-30-2016-2015-Prevent-Cancer-Foundation.pdf

That's a huge thing for a small charity. I bet they were projecting around $1 million or so and to get double that means they're going to be able to do a lot more of the stuff that helps prevent cancer. I can guarantee there will be more grants and studies funded, early detection programs started and other methods to fight cancer sponsored than they had planned for a week ago. That's awesome.

I had no idea PCF was such a small charity, and it makes me even happier about the marathon because that money is going to have a much more massive impact on PCF's ongoing operations than it would have had it been say the Red Cross or MSF.

Samuel Clemens
Oct 4, 2013

I think we should call the Avengers.

Two recommendations that I haven't seen anyone mention before:

Psychonauts: A really colourful game that lends itself well to speedrunning thanks to a couple of nifty tricks. The commentary wasn't outstanding, but they did a decent job explaining everything and there were a few highlights (particularly since the Milkman incentive was met).
System Shock 2: The runner was obviously nervous and messes up an important trick about a quarter into the run, but otherwise plays very skillfully and explains his strategies well enough that you should be able to follow along even if you've never seen the game before. On top of that, SS2 is very fast-paced with some precise movement, and the run is short enough that it doesn't overstay its welcome.

Regarding the Super Metroid race, I think it was also hurt by being a 100% run. That category is almost twice as long as any% but doesn't show all that many unique tricks, so you have a similar amount of content stretched over a much longer period of time. The fact that almost 10% of the run is spent watching the item pickup screen certainly doesn't help either.

Mario 3D Land is a pretty good run too. The commentary isn't the best, but it is Mario so you don't need a ton of commentary, and the game is actually really fast and technical and has a lot of super scary jumps.

I kind of wish 3D World would make another appearance at a GDQ but this is a solid run.
